I don't know if there is already an active thread discussing/studying birth year cards.  If there is, could someone please point me to it?  If not, I'd like to start one.  (This one right here, if here is appropriate, or in another section of the Forum if that makes more sense.)  Again, please advise!

I was unfamiliar with birth year cards until recently.  I just computed mine at https://labyrinthos.co/blogs/learn-tarot-with-labyrinthos-academy/how-to-calculate-your-tarot-birth-card-plus-short-birth-card-meanings-infographic and I couldn't be more blown away!

Hi, Grandma. You might like this thread about it. It's not very long though, so maybe there will be more here too. :)

Hi there!

Birth cards are something I've only recently discovered, but I'd be very happy to discuss with you!

Thank you for your responses, Rose Lalonde and Barbastelle -

I checked out the other thread and I think I'd like to continue here rather than add to the older one.

I have some very specific thoughts and questions I'd like to share.  It will be later in the day or even tomorrow (It's 4:30 pm where I am) before I'm able to get them typed up to post.  If anyone else wants to get the ball rolling in the meantime, please do!

Oh, I'm so excited!!!

I know my birth cards, and sometimes I notice them and sometimes not. I just found out that my mother and I have the same cards.

Warning – I go intensely, personally deep in this very long post.

Thank you all for your participation.  By the way, I have asked the Helpdesk to change the name of this thread. It should not include the word “year”.

Anyway…Birth cards are new to me.  My academic understanding is limited to very little research, including this definition from Biddy Tarot.

Created from the numbers in your birth date, Tarot Birth Cards

reveal our innermost self and our personal identity that remains

constant throughout our lifetime. Birth Cards also signify our

potential in this lifetime and the qualities we can draw upon in order

to fulfil our spiritual mission. They show you the strengths,

challenges and key themes of an entire lifetime, with great accuracy

      and depth.

My birth cards are the Hermit and the Moon.  Here is the meaning of this pair as interpreted at Labyrinthos.

Your path is about finding the clarity in the darkness, about finding

truth in an uncertain world. The Moon presents us with phantoms,

dreams and illusions. It is about the hidden facets that are just

below the surface. The hermit is the seeker, who uses their internal

truth to light the way to finding your own personal wisdom.

I have several questions/ideas about birth cards about which I would love to hear your thoughts.

Let’s start with this one: How accurate is the meaning of your birth card pair to your life, in terms of the Biddy Tarot quote above?

For me, the answer is spookily, eerily accurate.  I’ve more often than not been drawn to the Hermit in the many decks I’ve studied, and more often than not confused, or even repelled, by the Moon.  Learning that they are my birth cards makes sense.

The major theme in my life has been feeling lost and struggling for understanding.  Since early childhood, perhaps even infancy, I have been frightened, alone, and out of place.  It’s as though life is a foreign country where I don’t speak the language or understand the culture.

At home, everything I did was wrong, and if I did it differently, it was still wrong, and still wrong no matter how many times I switched it up.  I realize now that this was my parents’ guiding principle – that everything I did was to be considered wrong – and that their Mission Statement was to torment me.  From this arena I was launched into a world where I never belonged.

Understanding and making peace with this mess of a life has indeed been my spiritual mission.  Hopefully my extensive journey will stand my soul in good stead in its next incarnation.

When I was fourteen I wrote this poem:

A chill wind sweeps the empty sky.

I can't escape the bleak gray void

Of pain and tears and tearing cries.

Is it best to live in constant fear

And never know the reason why

      Or learn,

and with the peace of knowledge

      Die?

I’ve had many successes and accomplishments – I raised three confident, competent children born in the first of my two marriages, adopted a fourth child on my own after my first divorce, went back to school for a Master’s Degree, worked two jobs for twelve of my 25 years in the work force, bought a house, sold the house, helped bring up grandchildren, and more.  I am overwhelmed by life’s beauty.

But I’ve always been alone, frightened, and lost.  My relationship choices were usually disastrous, I’ve never to this day had any friends, I had to retire early due to severe, treatment resistant anxiety, depression and PTSD, and some of my children have estranged themselves from me.  Even at my happiest, most fulfilled best, there was a deep theme of anguish underlying my life.

I went as far as I could with traditional talk therapy, and with the help of some brilliant therapists I came to understand the source of my pain, what I had done to perpetuate it, and what I could do to ease it.  But easing it is as far as it gets.  There is deep residual immutable pain.  I am at age 70 finally learning to live in peace through Mindfulness.

So yeah, the Hermit and the Moon and the interpretation by Labyrinthos…

I would love to hear how other people view the relevance of their birth cards to the reality of their lives.  All pairs are explained at the link above, or please provide your own interpretations/readings of your cards or those given by other sources.

Whew – I’m worn out!

I have no idea why the embedded quotes in the previous post are so messed up.  Editing them has not yielded a good outcome.

This irks me greatly...

That is interesting!!! Have to look into it more deeply.

My cards are

11 - Justice

2 - High Priestess

Interesting is, that my life path in numerology is 11....

That IS interesting.  How can I find my life path in numerology?

Wait a sec - I just looked it up.  It's computed exactly the same as the birth cards!  Now I'm going to find out what my life path number, nine, signifies.  Thank you joy!

Thoughtful, it seems we all have 2 cards, a first and a second:

In your case you would be 'The Weel' and 'The Magician' :-)

I always used a different way to calculate birth cards (having seen that you added MM + DD + YYYY or M+M+D+D+Y+Y+Y+Y), and I've always got the Empress, although now trying the way you've linked to, I'm the Empress and the Hanged Man! It's very interesting  :)

Did you check if you have the same Life Path in numerology? Just curious...  :P

Three things:

Yes, the Life Path number will always be the same as the birth cards because they are both the sum of the same sequence of numbers.  I wonder if the Tarot concept of the birth card was developed out of the older discipline of numerology?

Next, I butchered my adolescent poem when I first posted it, and have edited the post accordingly.  The poem was/is

A chill wind sweeps the empty sky.

I can't escape the bleak gray void

Of pain and tears and tearing cries.

Is it best to live in constant fear

And never know the reason why

        Or learn,

and with the peace of knowledge

        Die?

This is important because it demonstrates how acutely aware I was of what I now understand to be, according to the theory of birth cards, the key theme and challenge of my spiritual mission in this lifetime.

And last, this thread seems to have screeched to a grinding halt and I think it's because my long post is so very heavy.  I am not asking for commiseration or pity, nor do I feel sorry for myself.  It's just my life, and if I do it right I'll be rewarded next time around.  In the overall scheme of how I see things, it's small potatoes, or whatever the homespun phrase is.

I just went into such detail by way of examining how relevant my birth cards are to my life.  I would love to hear if anyone else is also amazed by how much sense their birth cards make, or alternately, if they make no sense or just a little sense.  No need to get heavy or intense or unduly personal.

I hope this thread isn't dead, because I have other aspects of birth card theory in mind to discuss as well.  I know threads don't last forever, but I also hope I didn't kill this one prematurely!

Hi Grandma

Do not think this thread is dead, at least not for me.

Have to do some work to match up my birth cards with my life. But I am pretty sure they have been with me all the time.

My birth card is 5 - The Hierophant (coupled with Temperance if you like them as pairs) and even though I didn't initially connect with him we do have a lot in common! It's possible he will blossom to his full potential later in my life / I will develop some stronger Hierophant qualities later in life. I certainly find him more relatable than my life path number which also is 5. I'm not as hyperactive as I've read about the 5  :(

No matter the calculation, I always get either Death (13) or The Emperor (1+3=4). J'approuve

I get different numbers depending on how I calculate it...

A. 9+7+19+84=119

11+9=20 (or sometimes 1+1+9=11)

B. 9+7+1+9+8+4=38

3+8=11

C. 9+7+1984=2000=2

So I guess I have 3 cards (or 4 if you count the card switch of Strength and Justice)

It always gets me a little confused lol HP has a definite influence though.

I think I need to go check out those links now...

Hm... Everyone has 2 cards so you would be 13 - 4

In this path, the Death card represents the ending of cycles - of closing doors to open others anew. It is here where the Emperor’s power, authority and structure are needed in order to create stability and security. For the new cycle to be ushered in, a strong and willful hand will be needed to steer its movement.

I like the Birth Cards concept; mine are Temperance + The Hierophant.

I think it seems pretty accurate:

Temperance and The Hierophant share a passionate nature, a concern for purity of intention and action, faith in personal evolution and perfectibility. Both are impatient with wrong-doing and lack of effort.

Unintegrated and imperfectly realized, The Hierophant can be intolerant, inflexible and hypocritical, concerned with form instead of essence, permitting vice while forbidding heresy, exchanging the inner kingdom for a personal following. Temperance can be given to extremes — of self-righteousness and self-contempt, of anger and pity, of action and lethargy, of asceticism and license. He can be self-involved, lazy, sloppy, and given to fantasies of personal greatness.

..well, except the fantasies of personal greatness/following part. I'm really not that ambitious. ;P
