How long to wait before reading on the same topic?

Hi all. How much time do you think should be allowed to pass before reading again on the same topic? One where the querent’s position (or yours) may not have changed, but other factors might? Relationships for instance? A week? 6 weeks? And at what point would you recommend a new reading, to make sure you understand *current* circumstances, and are not considering outdated info?

It depends. I've read on the same topic again straight away, but have been asking a different question.

I've generally found that asking the same question over and over isn't useful, even if a gap is left.

I think 3 to 6 months unless the reading comes true or things drastically change!

Following on from what ilweran said, I used to read on certain things a lot and it's ultimately unhelpful and makes you more confused. One of the most important things about readings are trusting them! If you keep reading (or getting readings), you don't trust the message! The message will get more and more confusing.

Thanks both very much. I see what you mean about too many readings on the same question. I guess I wondered, if say I’m thinking of a situation based on a reading from like 2 months ago, how to know if the info from that reading was still valid.

If  you're reading for yourself, I caution you against reader burnout.  If you read for yourself about a certain subject, you aren't doing yourself or your cards any good.  I've known so many readers that burn out when they first start reading and find they leave the tarot for awhile and that's defeating your purpose.  What you do need to do in the meantime is use your cards in constructive way (not reading about one thing) and build a bond with your cards.  Some decks can really put out a lot of energy so give them time to energize between readings.  You can even recharge your decks.

So true about reader burnout. I tried to do daily readings for some months or a year and in the end it was no good. I've had to accept that I don't live a very unpredictable life or have a need to pull a card or do a tiny 2-3 card spread every day. It's just too much work for too little pay off for me. Now I only do readings for myself for a special occasion and that way I get to enjoy it more <3 I'm working on learning new ways of connecting with my cards that are less draining.

I thought about what Daniel said, that there are some people who seem to go get readings, or do them themselves, about the same topic all the time. It seems like they don't trust the reading and want to hear what the think themselves already or get some sort of confirmation that the mystical powers that be are on their side. It's a hard spot to be in and I can empathize with them, but this is a time where they should be stepping back from readings and try to maybe do something practical about the situation instead, because readings won't help them when they're not open to any input but their own.

I think I've heard that you can specify a timeframe when you do the reading, so maybe be proactive and add that in as you do the reading in the first place? Maybe I'm weird but I like to talk to my cards and tell them about the spread we're doing and any relevant info I think they need to hear, haha. I recently did a spread about my 3 gifts for the upcoming year and then I specified that those would be gifts in occasion of my recent birthday that I would use in the upcoming year. So that reading is probably valied until my next birthday.

Otherwise I think unless you learn something new or the situation drastically change a few months between readings is a safe bet. Worst case is you get similar cards, but I don't think 2 months later you will get drained or your deck will be giving gibberish answers. Maybe you've come up with a better question in that time too  ^-^

Interesting considerations, thank you both! For this question in particular, what I meant was that if I’m planning a course of action based on aspects of a situation I got from a reading I did about 6 weeks ago, how would I know for certain that those answers I got from that reading still apply?

Concerning burnout: I haven’t experienced it so far but that’s good to keep in mind. I’ll frequently draw one card in the morning, sometimes with a clarifier, to show me what my basic experience will be that day, energies, challenges and joys, or the nature of my interactions with a particular person. Then sometimes i get all the way out of the habit of doing anything with my cards and it’s hard to get back in tune after that.
