Looking for Advanced Tarot books ( Ebooks)

Hey all!

I am a book worm of sorts.

I am looking for high quality informative books about Tarot that you find are useful for an intermediate/ high level Tarot practitioner.

It has to have an E book version ( I can't or rather don't want to wait one month till the book arrives+ its cheaper)

I have just finished reading Tarot Beyond the Basics by Anthony Louis and I found it very interesting and informative.

Other books that I own include:

Tarot Spreads and Layouts by Barbara Moore

Tarot Plain and Simple my Anthony Louis

Robin Wood Tarot - the book ( since for now this is my go to deck)

21 Ways to Read a Tarot Card by Mary.k Greer

The Complete Book of Tarot Reversals by Barbara Moore - I haven't read it much since as for now I avoid using reversals.

Tarot Interactions by Deborah Lipp

365 Tarot Spreads by Sasha Graham ( I kinda regret getting it.. But what's done is done)

This is what I have.. any suggestions would be highly appreciated.

If possible Please explain what you find in the book you are offering.

Cheers

Great topic! I would say that it very much depends on what type of a person you are and which areas of tarot that interest you the most. I would suggest perhaps moving away from more general ‘broad spectrum’ tarot books and looking for books that revolve more around a specific topic/niche that you are interested in. Like books about tarot symbolism, astrology, Kabbalah, psychology, different reading styles etc.

Most seasoned readers would also consider it essential to include works by authors such as Arthur Edward Waite (the pictorial key is such a misunderstood and undervalued resource in my opinion!), Paul Foster Case, Aleister Crowley, Robert M Place, Lon Milo DuQuette (does a great job at making the Thoth tarot more accessible).

And I also feel that there is great value in at least having basic knowledge about tarot the marseille. Books by Yoav Ben-Dov, Jodorowsky etc are great choices. If you are more into different reading styles/approaches then perhaps you would like Tarot reading explained by James Ricklef, and Transformative tarot counseling by Katrina Wynne, as well as Tarot and psychology.

Just some suggestions that suit my style and interests, but they may not be for you. I’m sure more people will chime in. The only book that I personally don’t resonate with is Holistic tarot. I love Benebell but I don’t think this book does her justice in the way she now seem to approach things. So I hope she will publish another book that is more aligned with what she shares on YouTube and on her blog these days.

I am not sure if they come in e-book but I would also recommend:

- Understanding the Tarot Courts by Mary Greer

- The Complete Book of Tarot Reversals by Mary Greer

- 78 Degrees of Wisdom by Rachel Pollack (essential to any Tarot library in my opinion)

- Tarot Tells the Tale by James Rickelf (very fun read)

All of these are great. 78 degrees was the very first book that I bought myself on tarot (I had been borrowing whatever titles I could get hold of from the library until I had enough money to buy this book - I was only a teenager at the time and internet hadn't become “a thing” yet

Thank you both for your replies!

I am less interested at the time being in other systems besides the RWS

and is looking to enrich my knowledge.

I will definitely take a look at what you have suggested above.

It is probably a good idea to stick to one tarot system for the time being and when you reach a point of needing more stimulus then you can branch out - that’s basically what I did. I concentrated on RWS for many years before ever dabbling with other stuff. There is no rush, this should be a joyful process cause, honestly, tarot is more or less about the process. There is no real end destination (at least not that I’ve found yet, after more than 20 years of looking, but who knows - I might well have missed it!

If you are considering books by Waite to advance your knowledge of RWS, it's worth remembering they are out of copyright and you can find text versions for free by searching.

Excellent point! I shouldn’t be hard to find them in free pdf versions either so you can download them and read them in whatever ebook reader you use, even when you’re offline

If my maths is right, Crowley went out of copyright at the end of last year too.

Another thing that is worth knowing about the pictorial key (or about Waite in general) is that he loved to incorporate quotes in his texts without mentioning them as such. Those quotes are like clues and if you find the original source you will get a broadened understanding of all the things he intended and also of a lot of the things that he did not feel he could express in plain text due to the vows of secrecy he had taken with several secret orders. So if you are into those kind of things and would like to challenge yourself with a very obscure and complicated treasure hunt - then go ahead! Do keep in mind that not even Mary Greer, after years and years of decoding this book considers herself done with it  :))

I think you’re right about this

Not sure about the Book of Thoth, because of the illustrations.

And American copyright law is weird for stuff published between 1923 and 1976. It is possible for them to have 95 years post-publication extended copyright. So Americans may have to wait to download some of Crowley's stuff for free, while we Europeans can take advantage of the fact that our politicians are mildly less in thrall to corporate interests.

Yeah I have never really understood the complicated subject of American copyright law - by comparison I much prefer reading The Pictorial Key or even the Book of Thoth  X-D

I'd have to recommend Rachel Pollack's Tarot Wisdom: Spiritual Teachings and Deeper Meanings. It's an on-depth study of all the cards in the Tarot, comparing their meanings from different sources both historical and modern.

based on the books you have already

the complete book of tarot reversals was written by mary k greer.

ah yes the famous "regret getting it "  happens to the best of us,, even when we did the book reviews.

example the tarot interactions I got nothing from it.

and you see the review of raggy doll on the holistic tarot (I haven't brought it yet ) but I recall people being on the Fence about it on atf before it closed down..it was either tended to be loved or hated strange for such scholarly work.

if you do buy  "Rachel Pollack's Tarot Wisdom: Spiritual Teachings and Deeper Meaning"

you won't need to buy 78 degrees of wisdom.. (she said in 1997 edition there would be some things she would change) but after for completeness sake , it is being released next year revised by weiser books. (the 78 degrees of wisdom ).

at this stage in your development you are lucky for you moved from beginners to intermediate books.

so all you really need to understand reversals at a deeper level is mary k greer tarot reversals book. (i have it after all ) so get to reading !!

i do recomend her tarot court cards

from here we pretty well have all the same books, i mean i have rachael pollack, mary k greer,  anthony louis tarot and beyond. and to be honest,, due to my education level (never graduated high school ) there are somethings simply beyond me..

and that is ,, crowley books on the thoth, and the waite pictorial key to the tarot..

it isn't just the old english style but they were written by scholars.

you might like as they said,, don milo thoth book as it was recently released , and he spent his lifetime studying crowely book.

that said

it depends on where you want to go with the tarot from here,

I've really enjoyed The Secret Language of Tarot by Wald Amberstone.  It's available as an ebook and breaks down symbols in the RWS cards very, very thoroughly.  I paused in reading it a few months ago but I'm 37% of the way through according to Kindle and the Hierophant has been broken down into at least 4 parts, iirc.

Another book in my Kindle library is The Creative Tarot - Jessa Crispin (specifically applies tarot cards to creative pursuits).  And Jung and Tarot by Sallie Nichols has been sitting in my wishlist for over a year now.

I have a few more books that are really just card by card interpretations that I can share as well, if you want.

(Edit to add: One of my favorite things to do is pick a tarot ebook that I like and then browse through the related section.  And then I send a bunch of the "read free samples" to the kindle app on my phone so I can decide if I like the writing before purchasing.)
