Three of Coins

Anyone who has ever done any gardening knows that keeping one in good shape requires some knowledge and effort. The three "star" coins on the wall above the rose bush suggest the gardener who resides here is a master. Stars have been used to decorate a student's exceptional paper, to designate the rank of a military officer, and to honor the states of a country on its flag. Generally in all its uses, the star represents excellence and attainment. The four-pointed star is often called a "cross star" and indicates sacrifice and perseverance in order to earn recognition. The number three may imply a requirement of knowledge, passion and practical skill to reach this level of achievement. It may also suggest a union of people with different resources: one with the financial backing, one with the ideas or plans, and one with the skill to make the conception a reality. Either way, this kind of impressive mastery is going to require much more than a quickie online class with a print-it-yourself certificate.

Bodhiseed[/member] , since I plan to get this deck soon, I've started to look through these posts. How lucky am I that, with so few study groups here, this one is here?!  :D I think it's probably still on AT too, but obviously I can't thank you for all these threads and your thoughts over there, so it's much better here.

Gardening is hard. (I'm saying that in an embarrassingly whiny voice.) I seem to do terribly with it, mostly because I do it in fits and starts and not consistently. There would have to be a master there in my mind, as you said, to grow these beautiful roses. I also think of a compass, since the there's a sense of the early stages of the work here. Finding our way. Maybe that's more suited to the three of staves, but when I wondered and googled "compass points" the image that comes up is strikingly similar, with the shading, the cross and the x behind.  I suppose a good gardener would have to get a sense of where they're headed with the garden, how it will grow.

I have a lot more to read, but am grateful you've blazed the way with your posts!

I like the idea of the compass - I don't think we become master of anything that we don't discover we are passionate about!

What catches my eye first is the ivy, and the coins supported by it. It has taken serious cultivation for the growth to take hold. Those coins can't be lightweight. Aren't the roses going to be choked out by the ivy? It will take the expert gardener to carefully balance the full effect of the rose/ivy aesthetic that they're going for. It is both a work in progress and also a finished product. It's a perfect metaphor for this card: As we move from the balance of the 2 of Pentacles, we begin to enjoy life and yet we still have our work cut our for us, don't we? Now is not the time to sit back and relax. As soon as the roses start blooming, the ivy threatens to grow in and overtake them. It's a constant chore striking the balance between work and art. But with discipline and leisure we can enjoy the fruits of our labor.
