Hey all, I just signed up so may as well say hi. I browsed Aeclectic regularly, mainly using the site as a deck reference as I began to explore tarot, though I never registered for the forums there.

I love semiotics in general, and the history of these cards – Robert Place's The Tarot: History, Symbolism, and Divination was the first book I ever read on tarot, around 2014, I think. Doing backstory homework has been fun, and now I want to shift my focus to really learning the cards themselves and how to read. It's weird sometimes to encounter a person doing readings who knows almost no history (or false history) … and acknowledge I couldn't do a reading, lol. I want to become more balanced.

To make myself focus on one thing at a time, I'm planning to start with the Smith-Waite system, because that's what I have in my small collection, and those are the images most folks recognize. I feel that pull of TdM as well, but I need to zero in on something as a starting place.

(I got a little curious about Thoth and decided I wanted to read a biography of Crowley first to understand him better – about 2/3 through Perdurabo – so that can wait :)))

Hey you! Welcome! I'm looking forward to having you around to share that historical knowledge and to see your growth into being a tarot reader!

Hi, Blush, and welcome to the forum!  :)

A good biography of Aleister Crowley is Aleister Crowley: The Beast Demystified by Roger Hutchinson.  It's pretty interesting, and it's a lot shorter than Perdurabo.

Welcome Blush, how exciting that you are starting out on the road of Tarot reading.  It will be a wonderful journey for you, so much to learn and enjoy.  Everyone seems to start with Rider Waite apart from me  ;D l found the images to rigid,  you do not have to start with that deck.  Find one that you are really drawn, if it is the Rider Waite great.

Thanks, all!

I appreciate this recommendation – almost done with Perdurabo

Thank you. I love illustrated pips – which is why I got a Sola-Busca last year, to see that legacy – and then last night as I was pulling info from various places about the Fool card, a TdM style may be calling first after all, again, from a desire to understand what came before and then build on that.
