How much of your tarot practice is actually doing readings?

I'm just sort of curious!  Out of the time that you spend in your day working with tarot, thinking about tarot, studying tarot, playing with tarot, what sort of balance you've struck!

I'll talk about my balance in a bit, but I want to see what the polls bring in first!

Nice poll Libra!  I voted that I spend my time doing readings but I want to stress that is doing readings for other people.  When I'm not reading, I'm marketing my site or being an admin here which does keep me busy as well.  Everything I do is tarot.  I think in tarot, I see tarot cards everywhere but my days of studying have dwindled and now I have different activities in the tarot world.

I spend the most time researching because I don’t really have anyone to read for other than myself lately. I have a few friends that I read for on occasion. Like most people seeking a reader, they only want a readying when things aren’t so great. So, I’m happy to report that my friends are happy. Both sides of my family are very religious, and against it. So, there’s not much to work with there. That’s why I sought this place out. I was hoping to find some friends obviously open minded to learn with. :). This is a great poll. I’m very interested to see what everyone else has to say.

With a couple of responses here, I'm gonna add mine!  Right now, I'm definitely more on the playing with cards, researching cards, talking about cards side of things, with some readings thrown in.  Even when I'm using my cards, it's not intentionally for a reading, it's activities and thought exercises that expand my knowledge, but don't come with the intention of divining!

A while back, I was 100% readings.  I had my Etsy shop running and was on Tumblr doing readings.  I very rarely had the time to just hang out with my cards like I love to.  I haaaaaated it.  It made tarot feel like a grind to me!  I think that I need to have at least a 50/50 blend of just doing my thing vs doing actual readings, though right now, I'm way more on the doing my own thing vibe!

EmpressAdora[/member] I'm with ya on having happy friends, and really I don't always need a lot of readings on myself either lol!  That's why I'm so gung-ho about playing with my cards in non-reading ways!  I don't want to give them up and I want to always be expanding my knowledge of them, but I don't find that readings on their own give me that knowledge I'm seeking!

I think what you’ve said is really brilliant. I need to find more non reading activities to fill the void so to speak. I’m always wanting to play with them but run out of things to ask. In the past I spent a great deal of time experimenting. Or, teaching my cards if you will to read yes or no questions. So that I could develop a system to read them. I would ask tons and tons of questions that I knew I would get a definitive answer from by the end of the day. Little things like “will my boss come in today?”  Things that I didn’t know the answer to but I knew I would know by the end of the day. It actually worked and I find my system works now. But now that that works. I have nothing to tinker with 😂😂😂

Tinkering is MY THING my friend!  Like:

  • Figure out your birth cards, and chat it up in this thread
  • Go through your deck collection, and choose your favorite for each card and talk about them in this forum
  • Get deeper with it and compare and contrast different versions in this forum
  • Get a bit silly with it all and create a family portrait with your cards
  • use your cards as prompts for a short story, or even poetry!
  • literally pretend you're a character in the card, and figure out what you see, smell, hear, etc as that character!
  • pull two cards, and blend them in a silly, non-serious way to one meaning

There's so much to do with the cards that isn't studying or reading!  I think it's important to incorporate PLAY into tarot.  Because, when we were kids, we were so much more intuitive, generally speaking.  Bringing back a bit of childish fun helps to open up the intuitive pathways!

At this moment I spend more time doing other stuff with my cards then just reading with them. But these things fluctuate quite a lot for me.

I consider myself a newbie with tarot but I found that readings (about everything under the sun) are a great way to get familiarized with the cards and the combinations. So I've been doing daily readings and taking notes so I can get a deeper understandment of the cards and spend the rest of the time researching about the cards, combinations, spreads. The final thoughts I write tem on my tarot notebook for reference :)

In the end of the day, I spend a LOT of my free time playing with my cards.

One of my favorite spreads are "When will...happen?" from Biddy Tarot. I've been doing them a lot and taking huge amounts of notes so that I can check them out later and get more familiarized with it.

Great poll!  I probably spend more time researching, learning, admiring, love doing work book exercises, writing deck reviews, preparing lessons for friends here I mentor through the TT&M mentorship program, journaling which does include readings for myself as well as readings I do in reading circles here or for friends.  At heart I am a nerd (meant in a positive way), so I really enjoy discovering new ways to enjoy my decks and talking tarot with all of you.  <3

I love all of this!!!! I’m going to do all of here things!  How fun!  Plus it gives me an excuse to drag out some of those decks that hardly ever get any love! Thank you so much!

Most of my practice involves posting on this forum, reading Tarot books, looking up decks online, buying the occasional deck, then shoving that deck into a drawer or closet until I completely forget about it.  By the way, I recently came across three more decks I forgot all about: Animals Divine (which is a beautiful deck, but was bit too "fluffy bunny" for my tastes, the Selena Lin Manga Tarot (the cardstock made the cards impossible to shuffle) and the Lo Scarabeo Fairy Tarot, which I never really connected with.  Maybe I'll try working with them again.

I also cast the occasional Tarot spell, but I haven't been doing much of that lately either.  I'm completely slacking off.

I used to be doing more readings than research, but I raised my prices to reduce demand in my shop while I'm in school and making grad school applications so I'm in a research phase right now.

I'd say it's pretty balanced for me at the moment, lots of readings but lots of research/study as well.

This reminds me so much of myself!  I just found the labyrinth deck unopened in a suitcase. I have no idea.

That's really cool, though - now you have a brand new deck to explore!

I research decks. I need more books on tarot I feel (I only have one book) and try attempt a read each day or every other day.

I write journal reflection on the cards. Still learning would like to do more spreads, readings...

Posted

I do readings mostly. Because every reading is different, I do learn new things as I go along. And I seem to see new things in the cards each time. So yes, I basically learn by doing :)

My practice at home is primarily study, and research, and occasional self-readings. I like to find out as much as I can about a deck...author, illustrator, theme, history, etc.

I am a huge RWS aficionado, who is currently comparing the various editions that I have, in preparation for a Meetup I will be hosting in February. We’ll be celebrating PCS’ birthday, and I’ll be showing and telling about different RWS decks.

We do readings for each other at our monthly Meetups, which is very enjoyable. Back in the day, I used to read in a couple of metaphysical bookstores and at a large outdoor summer flea market. Got a bit burned out on that, sadly.

But I enjoy what I am doing at the moment...it sparks joy, as Marie Kondo would say!

I'm still very new to tarot, so I spend a lot of my time right now studying and getting to know the cards. I don't really have anyone to read for but myself too, and I don't have a lot of topics to read on, so mostly study for now!

I love this idea! Thank you libra[/member], I'm 100% going to do all of these.
