Hey all!

So here is my issue... since starting my Tarot journey a few years back I have only studied the traditional RWS interpretations which I most time take out of the traditional images.. it is true that like with the horse in the 6 of wands ( which is featured in another discussion thread) I sometimes deviate from the traditional meaning of the card based on intuition, but oftentimes I rely.on the traditional / traditional like pictures to base my meanings on.. As a result, Over the years I used the original RWS deck and some very. Similar clones - like the Robin Wood - where while some images are different - like the devil card - the overall meanings are the same, at which case I am able to use what I know and adapt to the new image... Now, my problem begins when a card is different - both in meaning and picture - even if it is a clone of RWS - for example the llewyllen deck depicts the 9 of pentacles with the traditional woman who seems to order other people around... this throws me off because I am comfortable with the alone  aspect of the 9 s and their assosiation to the hermit.. when suddenly the woman isn't alone!!!. Added to that, the book interpretations are also different.  Had the picture been similar I could have just ignored the book, but since the image lacks an element that I consider vital, I don't know how to deal with it, since I draw meanings from the pictures as well... this issue makes it SUPER hard to try use new decks even if they are clones, which bothers me a lot.. I have the same issue with the healing tarot where some images and their meanings are not " original" which kinda prevents me from using the deck. I would love ideas / tips as to how to make the transition....

Compare 5 differnt decks a day. Look for differences, and remember the artist intention is just a guidline.. the rest is up to you.

That said i also love reading a great guidebook to see differnt looks at cards.

Have you used oracle decks at all? It might help you to just jump into an entirely intuitively stimulating oracle deck for a while, then to take those skills and being it back into tarot, rather than trying to change the way you read tarot.

Aside from that, my main tip would be to use tarot for creative activities. Write stories and poetry based on the cards, do the "Family Portrait" activity thing I posted, and just try to do this stuff without letting your head get in the way. By paying with the cards, rather than reading them and studying, different pathways open up and it becomes easier to read decks that deviate from what you have memorized for each card.

I totally agree with Holmes.  Compare your different decks side by side.  Go through the cards and look for the similarities and differences on the cards between decks.  And read the guide books that come with the decks.  A great example is the Chrysalis deck.

This deck is more than just a slightly different system than RW but many of the images are not RW clones at all.  But when  you read the companion book (and it has a very good one), you learn the deck is about storytellers.  It's an entire troop of performers.  So without knowing that you might think the interpretations for the cards are off and you can't relate to them.  But when you look at the cards you can still catch the intended RW meaning along with the new updated meanings that accompany the deck.

l would not worry too much about always following the basic meanings. If the images are different just take onboard what you see in the card, this is where you can learn to use your intuition,  try to get feelings or a sense of what the card is telling you.

Often when reading the cards a lot of us see a particular card quite differently from how we have read it before.  l have looked at the card,  it still has the same meaning l feel,  she is happy and she has left the person behind her as she is going forward on her own journey.  She has worked hard, shown by the harvested wheat at her side.  She is shown with  coins around her indicating what she has achieved to be comfortable.

Edit to add:  Perhaps the two people behind her are those she has  shown how to get working in their own lives.  They remain in the fields tending new harvest and could make of their lives what she has achieved.

The Hermit could still be relevant as she is perhaps happy to go into retreat, to relax and enjoy what she has achieved.  She can work out the next on her journey.

Also, if the idea of being alone is crucial to your reading of the 9s - ask yourself, in what ways could she feel that influence of The Hermit? You mentioned that she appears to be ordering purple around. That puts the people on a different level. Could she be feeling lonely even around people, who only see her as a boss?

I’m gonna suggest a method that I feel is valuable but that may or may not resonate with you. Just start by picking a card - any card, from the deck you want to connect with. Try to not pay any attention to it’s title so that you are not tempted to try and remember the equivalent card from the RWS. Just look at the picture to begin with. It is normal to feel like you’re completely stumped - but that is just a temporary block, trust me. Now, start describing the picture out loud. Yes, talk out loud to yourself. Don’t try and interpret it yet, just mention everything you see and what ever thoughts crosses your mind. Then, take a breath and relax. Put the card down on the table and look at it again but with more distance to it. Now concentrate on what feelings you get from it (say it out loud). Does the card remind you of anything that’s happened in your life? Or does it remind you of something you’ve heard, or of a person you know? Can you pinpoint why? When you’re done with that, then just piece everything together. This way you will develop a sense of the essence in this card. It is a bit like when you tell someone about one of your neighbors. You could either repeat all the facts you know about this person (works in the post-office, has glasses, rarely washes his car, talks with an accent... and so on) or you can truly describe this person as someone you actually have a sense of (it’s a bit like having a three dimensional vs a two dimensional view of something).
