If you have ever done a reading for the year, whether for yourself or others, I'd like to hear your thoughts.

I have pulled a card per month type of spread before and looking back, I'm not sure how useful it was.  Even if I could make a connection between the card of the month and what happened, it was always in retrospect.

I'm mulling over two ways to do it this year:

1. A reading that breaks it down by the seasons, most likely using the solstices and equinoxes as my dividing points. Each section would contain multiple cards to give a fuller reading than just one.

2. A reading that pulls for each new moon of the year and each section once again having multiple cards. For example, the Capricorn new moon on Jan 6th of 2019 could have a card pulled for theme for the cycle, what to look out for, and advice.  I could also bring some astrology into this, breaking down what the new and full moons of that cycle would mean.

What do you do for a year at a glance reading?

In December / January every year I used to do a 12 month card spread with a 13th card for the overview of the year. But one year I had two very bad months in the cards and I worried about them all year! But they didn't turn out like I expected and I realised I worried about it. So now I take a card at the beginning of each month and don't read too far into the future. It's much more in the month rather than predicting further into the future. I do look at how the year will go in a very general way and there is some great spreads out there online.

I think with your options, you just have to stick with one way that you like, months of the year, moons, seasons? I think it depends what you really want to find out, is it a calendar reading, it is one using the wheel of the year and linked to paganism or is it an astrology / lunar reading?

Although I like fortune telling and going into the future, I find calendar readings just don't tell me enough about each month. You have to go in quite detailed each month for a good message I think.

I have, but I have to admit that I am very remiss about going back over the reading to see if there was any accuracy lol.

Not tarot exactly, but you could do this or something similar if you wanted to casually learn to read playing cards. Although for me, my heart sunk immediately as I realised my entire year was now regimented by numbers, whether I knew about it or not. But as far as a practice in non-attachment, its good, because I think even if one week i bad, its balancing out somewhere else.

Thank you to everyone who responded! I definitely agree with the points raised, so I'm just going to go with what feels fun and not devote myself to the results.

This is actually super cool!  Thank you for showing me. I haven't learned playing cards yet, but I've been itching to so maybe now is the time.

One card a week is manageable, and it leaves lots of room for comparing and contrasting the systems

Like others I have tried to look ahead with spreads that break the year up by months or moons and felt the results were not particularly helpful.

What I have done for some years instead is using the card to find a focus for that year and get some insights around that focus.

Just adding to Swanhild[/member] 's post, some people calculate their Tarot card for the year and use that as a focus or starting point. There are a few different methods for calculating the card for the year. Let's see if I can find some links...

Another thought is that you use an oracle deck and pull a card for each month and making it about something that will aid you and that you can pull strength, encouragement or even guidance from each month. Perhaps a themed deck (animals/deities/plants/crystals) where the card represents a positive energy that you can meditate on and utilize that particular month. It would remove the stressful divinatory aspect and make it more constructive (in my opinion). I think I’m going to be doing this myself this years, with 12 animals and 12 crystals allies that will aid me every month. Perhaps I’ll even pick one animal that symbolizes and summons up

the energy of the year and the approach or attitudes that would serve me well.
