How do you decide which deck to use?

Do others choose decks to use, based on season or based on feelings at the time?

Also any good deck recommendations for this time of year winter?

I'm using wild wood tarot at the moment.

For me, it's just what I feel like using at the time. I don't really go by season, though it's possible a pattern will develop and I'll find myself using certain decks at certain times of year.

That said, with it being cold and snowy here, Starchild seems like it would suit and something about the Shadowscapes feels comforting this time of year. Also the new Dreamkeepers Tarot feels kind of wintery, and I've been drawn to (but haven't yet gotten) the Darkness in Light, which feels like it could be a good winter deck. The Fountain Tarot might also be a good winter deck, though I haven't connected with it.

My top 3 right now are Numinous, Raven's Prophecy, and Sasuraibito, none of which feels particularly wintery. I do like how the backs of the Numinous look kind of icy, which is fitting for the weather, but the card illustrations themselves are very comforting to me, which is what I need right now!

I have seen reviews on Fountain tarot it seems could be like a deck for this time of year. I'm trying to connect with Shadowscapes tarot because thought it may give a positive vibe for this time of year.  Odd_soul, The others quoted I'll have to take a look. ☺

I don't really have enough decks of specific seasons to do them but I do for some times of year!

I choose decks by 3 ways normally....

-  a deck I know will be great for that type or reading or person or question, often they have different strengths

-  a deck that calls to me, often I get a mental image of one that just cries out to be used, an intuitive choice

-  a deck I am currently using to get used to and using to learn it, using a deck to study it and see all the cards

I often ask others if they want to choose the deck for their reading but mostly it's one of those 3 ways.

Since it gets dark so early in winter, Tarot of a Moon Garden might be a good choice, with it's night-time backgrounds

It's also a good choice if you like fairies, unicorns, and dragons.

I do like fairies, unicorns and dragons deffo. This could be a good choice for dark nights etc. However magical feel too. ☺

I don't have enough decks for this to really be an issue but I tend to pick the one I'm most drawn to at the time.

The only time I don't is that my daily draws are always done with one card from my oracle deck (Wild Unknown Animal Spirit) and one card from the Herbal Tarot as they are the decks I'm working to build more connection with.

I choose mainly based on intuition, and since I tend to work with multiple decks for every reading then it can get really interesting to see which ones that call to me. But I’m sure there’s a logical component as well, that takes the actual circumstances into account. Plus different seasons can certainly affect the mood sometimes  :)

I don't have a big collection so I mostly just open the box where I keep them and see what calls to me.  Different decks definitely have different voices so, for example, if I'm down or anxious, I'd probably pick one of my funnier or gentler decks.  It can depend how deep I want to go with the reading as well... and whether I'm trying to make a decision or whether I want to spend time meditating.

If I'm reading for someone else, I show them a few decks that I'm comfortable with and let them pick the one they like best.

I do what Daniel does

Hi there..

I really like this. I'd like to get to the point where I'm able to judge the type of energy and reads each deck offers. This has started to come forth with practice over time however there's times I really have to work with a deck to judge it's character. I'm now on lookout for an older female energy nurturing vibe. I'm pondering Pauline tarot.

When I'm sitting with a person, I take in their energy and decide whether an inherently "masculine" or "feminine" deck would work best--this needn't correspond with their gender, just their energy. Within that, I have my go-tos, so I intuitively pick from there. Sometimes, though, I have out a few decks and just ask the person which one they like best, which also works. I'm pretty open, but I do only give options for decks I feel quite familiar with myself. I save other, less intuitively familiar decks for my own personal learning!

I don't read for myself but when I read for sitters, I have them pick out their own decks when at all possible.  If they don't, then I take into account their zodiac sign and what their question is I'll be answering.  I really like it when they choose their own deck, that makes it so easy on me!

l usually use my workhorse deck (Roots of Asia) for readings, but very occasionally the energy feels weak,  so l know its time to give it a rest.  This may sound silly to others but it does happen.

When that is the case l will use another deck which calls to me intuitively.  l get an image in my mind of the deck l need to us, and l feel the energies strongly.

When l first started doing readings way back l did try letting the sitter choose a deck, but it did not work for me.  l definitely have to choose and be guided to the deck l want to work with.

Absolutely!!  I agree with this.  I used my Thelema deck the other day and I use it quite often but it felt weak to me so I reblessed the deck, gave it a thorough shuffle and it felt much stronger.

I agree with this, too. My Cat People tarot--which is like one of my oldest decks!!!!--has been coming in thin lately. I hate to say this, but I think it needs an outright replacement. (Never said that before.)

So glad l am not alone on this Saturn Celeste.  l will shuffle the cards also then l put them on a large Amethyst cluster in front of my Buddha who holds a tea light candle.  l let the candle burn out naturally and l leave the deck for at least a week, even more.  l know when it is ready to work again because l get that intuitive call to use it again.

Oh don't be too hasty.  if like my deck its been a good workhorse for you give it some tender loving care and give it a rest.  A new one may not have those wonderful energies that you have built up over the years.

I really like others methods of choosing a deck. So I feel I'm headed in right direction.

I've often chosen decks based on the initial deck interview i.e if they like to be connected often or not.

Then there are other decks I've brought, looked at however feel I'm not ready for or they've said 'not yet, 'Must be joking' ☺

So now I'm learning also, not only their energies, their personalities but also when these decks to be used, charged, cleansed blessed etc..

Each deck is beautiful and unique in their own special way.

You know I tried this a couple of times and found myself always returning to the older deck because it was just not the same.  So I agree with the Thoughtful.

So..if you connect to a deck you've not used in a long time do you do a new interview for the deck, read over older notes from last time..or use a different refresher type spread?

Sorry all questions...just I'm looking connect with Shadowscapes Tarot after such a while and seem to be finally making a breakthrough.. Even though seems to be jumper cards a lot. ☺

I've that noticed for me I tend to go for a deck I'm bonding with because it's new or calling my name, and if I ever go for something else, it's because I felt intuitively called to another deck for some reason. I also pick based of the deck interviews I've done. I usually don't pick decks based off season but yeah! Sometimes I do find other ways to pick but those are really my main 3 ways.

To reconnect l generally shuffle the deck several times and hold it until l feel its absorbed my energies again.  Then l ask if we are ready to work together, or will we have a good partnership again.

If l get nonsense cards or do not feel drawn to the deck l put it aside.  l have wanted to work again with my Golden Tarot (Kat Black) but each time l try it leaves me cold, like picking up an ice block, shame  :(
