Decan Posted July 19, 2021 Posted July 19, 2021 I offer a catch line here: "Be a genuine reader, what your sitter doesn't see makes the difference!!" 🤣

Decan Posted August 27, 2021 Posted August 27, 2021 Another myth I heard about (and that I found a little weird, but maybe you heard about it too) it's to don't pull the cards on Monday because it is the day of the Moon and the cards are lying that day. I just mention, don't say I agree!! 😁

I just mention, don't say I agree!! 😁 Hahaha, let's do more! Tuesday: Tyr (Tiw) has one hand. Not good for shuffling, unless you are using the "Fallout Method." Wednesday: Odin's (Woden's) day should be excellent for reading. Thursday: Thor brought a thing to help you read cards. Goodbye, table. Friday: Freyja gets cats to pull her chariot. Cats. Anyone who can get work out of cats knows things we don't. Read. Saturday: That guy eats his own kids. Hard pass. Sunday: Speaking as a dedicated heliophobe who tries not to venture far from the air conditioner, it's a no. Those in more northerly climes may benefit, though. Edited August 27, 2021 by katrinka

Raggydoll Posted August 28, 2021 Posted August 28, 2021 In Scandinavia we call Saturday ‘Lördag’ and it is traditionally ’lögardagen’ which means bath-time day. People would scrub themselves clean once per week. So I guess that readings done on a Saturday will help you come clean with things, whether you want it or not. Fun fact for those who do runes: lögar cones from the word lagu, which is the Water rune 😊

If they're not going to be consistent and name all the days after Norse gods, why not have Bathday?

Another fun fact, in the old icelandic rune poem there is a connection with the planet Saturn and the Troll/Giant rune: ᚦ Þurs er kvenna kvöl ok kletta búi ok varðrúnar verr. Saturnus þengill. = Thurs ("Giant") is torture of women and cliff-dweller and husband of a giantess Saturn's thegn. So the connection to the planet Saturn with unpleasant things was known here too. Luckily our Saturdays wasn't named after trolls or giants but after cleanliness (something that we perhaps weren't very famous for in the Viking days 😂 )
Raggydoll Posted August 28, 2021 Posted August 28, 2021 But to get back on topic, there is actually a book dedicated to tarot myths. The title seem to suggest that it is Sundays that we ought not read cards.. I wonder why! https://www.amazon.com/No-Reading-Sundays-Other-Legends/dp/1500603201

As an aside each of our days are named referring to the planets, no Nordic Gods here. ETA: actually except Sunday ; we say « dimanche » which refers to God (the day of the Lord). But I associate this day to the Sun. Edited August 28, 2021 by Decan

Though somewhere I heard all things are allowed but maybe shouldn't be done.

Morwenna Posted June 15, 2023 Posted June 15, 2023 As I recall, that (very long) thread had a lot of items, many of which are listed here again. My reply was that, since I often read on Sundays, in the rain, letting others handle my cards, etc., was I doomed? Let's face it, Renaissance fairs are held on weekends and primarily outdoors; and if people aren't allowed to touch the cards, how do you get their energy into them? Conversely, if you wouldn't let people touch your cards anyway, why should you be forced to let them? A lot of those myths totally ignore practical considerations, or at least they arose at a time when those considerations hadn't been thought of yet. I can see why Sunday might have been frowned upon; akin to Jewish law, Sunday (the Christian Sabbath) is supposed to be a day of rest, and even as late as my teens (1960s) I had friends who were shocked that I took a summer job that required me to work every other Sunday. And if you read for pay, that does count as a job.

And "don't store your tarot deck in the same bag/box/room/cabinet(etc.) as another". Has anyone mentioned the "your first deck has to be gifted" one yet? I wonder how may shops get ripped off because of this one? Reading back, I found this post. It brings two things to mind: One, if we can't store cards together, how many rooms will each of us need to properly store our collections? (Gregory--how many HOUSES would it take you??) Two, as for crossing the palm with silver, there are different ways of interpreting that. One is, of course, that if you pay for the information it will be worth more to you. But my (late) husband heard a different one: that the act of crossing the palm, that is making a cross on the palm, with a piece of silver will seal it to showing the truth. So he would take an old actual silver dime and a couple small pieces of silver jewelry (pendants without their chains) and ask the querent to choose one and make a cross on his palm with it. (He used to read cast stones.)
