I've just started reading for others, and find it hugely enjoyably & enlightening ... and hallelujah long may it continue.

I've read 100's of different readings on here, other sites, aeclectic archives etc, and tried to study & learn as much as possible, and i'd like to ask the tarot people on here a question, and would much appreciate advice & wisdom.

One of the most valuable lessons in life was that there are two sides to every story.  Generally, in everyday life,  i find people don't exactly lie, but they exaggerate say about how bad their ex is for example, or how unfair their boss is, then you find out the person's always late for work and slacks off as much as possible.  I think we all have a propaganda machine inside that kicks in when we are telling a tale, and want people to be sympathetic.  I read somewhere recently a lawyer who said that in court there is a little bit of truth in everything the prosecution & the defense say, although it is always grossly exaggerated and the real truth lies somewhere in between, somewhere in the middle.

Anyway, my question is: Do you think it's best just to read blind and just have the question from the quarent, and see what the cards say; or do you think it's advantageous to know something about the situation.  Because from what i've read, when the reader knows something about the situation it seems to prejudice the readings.

What is your advice?  Cheers

I’ve never had a fast rule, I let the client lead. Some wants to tell their story while others prefer to say as little as possible. I personally think it will only make you a better reader if you can stay flexible and go with what suits each client best. But how about doing practice readings where you try different approaches and see what works best for you? Maybe flexibility isn’t your thing and you find that one approach gets way better results or just resonates more with you? Then go with that! Good luck

Yes, thank you Raggydoll[/member] for that.  I guess that's right, flexibility is the key if you wanna be an all-rounder.  I'm thinking going in blind is prob the best way to learn, as you have to rely solely on intuition, but then at some point i'm going to get it all wrong and be shot down in flames by some sharp tongued individual.  I guess it's like anything though... get up, dust yourself down and carry on.

You are going to be your own worst critic and there will be times when you will lose your perspective and make it all about accuracy/positive feedback - basically, all about YOU and not about the connection and experience that you share with your client. This is normal and completely expected. Prestige, ego and insecurities will be an issue at some point (and to some degree) for everyone. You will fall into the trap of comparison and always start focusing on the next reading instead of giving yourself proper credit for the one you just did. But eventually you’ll find balance and if this turns out to be something that you really want to do then all will fall into place and you will know who you are as a reader and where your true strengths lie. This process can be super scary and intimidating at times but really awesome and deeply fulfilling as well. I’m excited for you!

Hey Cookie,

First off, well done for starting to read for others!  :D

A bit of background information up-front can definitely help in getting a sharp and specific reading. At the same time, I reckon Raggydoll is right, let the sitter lead and divulge as much or as little as they feel comfortable with. Besides, they're likely to reveal more as the reading develops, anyway.

For me, the important thing is to try and remain detached and always stick to what you see in the cards.  Formulating a specific and unambiguous question is also pretty important.

Cheers.

Raggydoll[/member] You're spot on re: the prestige, ego and insecurities thing..... dealing with these issues is a part of why I regard card-reading as something of a spiritual path in and of itself.

Yes, thank you.  It feels like ages since i took up the quest, as tarot has introduced me to poets, philosophy, the Kabbalah, Jung, metaphysics and myself too, but it has been only a year.  I've only just begun, but i had a feeling i'm well & truly "on the road"

thank you Devin.  That is a great piece of advice too.  Detachment...if you are emotionally involved you are no use to anyone...ask any counselor that!

And that is so simplistic but so true...don't distract from what you see in the cards.  don't be too clever too, which covers that!

i shall take your knowledge with me.  cheers!
