PageOfCups Posted December 17, 2018 Posted December 17, 2018 Has anyone else noticed that the insides of Doctor Strange’s Cloak of Levitation look a lot like the back of the Thoth Tarot deck? Do you guys think this is just a coincidence, or do you think the costume designers knew what they were doing? The Thoth system IMHO is one of the Big Three (Rider-Waite Smith, Thoth, and Tarot de Marseille). It has history, I happen to own the book by Akron & Banzhaf and there are meditation “prompts”, it’s deep and complex. I also noticed in the spiritual world (IRL) that only a certain kind of person is drawn to it, but the ones that are, are SOOOO loyal to it! (I get that it’s not everybody’s cup of tea, but I’d consider it well-revered.) I’d even consider it a “special deck” (I was going to say "pedigreed", but that sounded so pretentious LOL) and I think it would make sense for it to be Stephen Strange’s deck of choice. Worthy of the Master handling it as a relic. I think Cloakie would agree. Thoughts? Honest coincidence or deliberate choice?

Good eyes, PageofCups!

But Cloakie didn't have the Thothy insides in the versions other than the 2016 film, did it?
Morsoth Posted March 30, 2019 Posted March 30, 2019 But Cloakie didn't have the Thothy insides in the versions other than the 2016 film, did it? No. I'm a huge Doctor Strange too, and read all the comics (even the weird guest issues) and the Cloak of Levitation design in the movie is unique. The cloak had different iterations in the comics (3 different cloaks exists, the second one -- the red and gold -- being the most popular). It's funny seeing this thread because I knew the pattern reminded me of something but I never looked more into it! Now it makes sense! There is some comics where Doctor Strange uses Tarot decks. The ones that came to mind are these: In Marvel Team-Up Vol 1 #76 (1978), Doctor Strange studies a Celtic Cross layout from a Rider-Waite Tarot deck that he mysteriously received. In Secret Defenders Vol 1 #1 (1993) Doctor Strange uses a "Custom Marvel" Tarot Deck, with him as the Magician. In Mystic Arcana #1 (2007) & Mystic Arcana: The Marvel Tarot (2007), Ian McNee looks through the "First Tarot Deck" and The Magician is represented by Doctor Strange... They also uses an Egyptian deck - where the images are drawn on bones cards. Mystic Arcana: The Marvel Tarot (one-shot) has some notes and symbolism!
