unknownpleasures Posted December 17, 2018 Posted December 17, 2018 Also, how did you feel you first reading went? I just wondered how long people waited before they felt comfortable doing a reading for another person. X/
Cookie Posted December 17, 2018 Posted December 17, 2018 Hi unknownpleasures[/member] I've just started to read for others. I have been studying the cards about one year (quite intensively: reading a great deal; meditating, combining the kabbalah, and practicing reading for myself...absolutely loads). I have benefited from studying experienced readings on here and other forums; but held back until i felt ready ... although sometimes i feel as though i know nothing & my mind is a blank, other times i get insights. I think it depends on the person. Some people learn from reading for others straight away. Some think they know more than they do (like any art form...the people who think they're a good artist, writer etc are probably not, as it's the insecurity and the self-doubt that make people "Good" and striving for perfection). Some are very naturally gifted and don't even have to read a book to know the meanings (rare "connected" people). Some are talented but never read for others. Just when it feels right for you, go for it. And don't look back.

MY issue at present as I am new, and i'm sure it's the same for others is trying to remember so much info. I think time and patience is key here.
Cookie Posted December 17, 2018 Posted December 17, 2018 Yes, it's so confusing, but if you persevere it will click suddenly ...and you'll learn a tremendous amount of info in a short space of time. It's getting your mind used to the symbols and archetypes within the cards. Until you're ready they will be hidden from you, it's very strange. read Jung's essays and books on archetypes & symbolism. The first time i tried to read him it was gobbledygook, then a couple of months later i understood what he was on about .. so bare that in mind read 78 degrees of wisdom by rachel pollack too...a brilliant book, and a must !!!!!!
Raggydoll Posted December 17, 2018 Posted December 17, 2018 I would like to differentiate between reading for others and doing paid readings for others. For me there was a big difference there. I started reading for others basically straight away when I received my first deck. (I was in my early teens and was gifted a deck for christmas, so my sister and I did readings for each other several days in a row. sitting next to each other on my bedroom floor. We read out loud from the guidebook and tried to make sense of it. Not that successfully though ). So I performed lots of 'for entertainment purposes only'- type readings for several years. I was in my late teens when I started to actually work in a more serious and intuitive way. And when I was in my early twenties I finally felt I knew enough to start charging money. For me, the age thing was definitely a big factor. So if I had started in my late teens then I think I would have felt ready much sooner. I have also gone through phases over these years where I have felt really confident at times, and like a complete novice at other times. Right now I am at a place where I know who I am as a reader but I still recognize that the ways in which I read and how I utilize my cards is still evolving. I lean much more toward intuitive/psychic readings now, but I still include a solid foundation in traditional tarot meanings as well. So there is a balance; a temperance-moment (or the sweet spot) perhaps, where it just works really well for me.
Raggydoll Posted December 17, 2018 Posted December 17, 2018 read 78 degrees of wisdom by rachel pollack too...a brilliant book, and a must !!!!!! A little off topic, but I'm really glad you liked it!!
sandrang123 Posted December 17, 2018 Posted December 17, 2018 I no longer remember how my first reading went--it was long ago. I began reading in my teens (14) and did so for friends and occasionally for family members. I did that for quite a few years. When I was in my early twenties, I was reading (without pay) for people at the place I was then working, and word got around so much that I started charging just because my weekends were taken up with reading people. The move felt natural at that point. There were also times in life (such as during several graduate school programs) when I charged more because my time was strapped. And there were times in at least one state where I read again (friends) mostly for free, just because the area was very VERY Baptist and I didn't have a lot of "regular" clients. That's probably not the definitive answer you'd hoped for, but I think it really does depend.

PageOfCups Posted December 17, 2018 Posted December 17, 2018 Bought my first deck (Hanson-Roberts Tarot) and book (Joan Bunning) in 2004. Did my first reading for others (close friends) around early 2017-ish. It went fine, I was just glad to be around people who wouldn't judge me for liking the woo-woo. 🖤
Grandma Posted December 17, 2018 Posted December 17, 2018 I bought my first deck two or three years ago and started reading for, or more accurately practicing on, Grandpa right away. I had to look up meanings and think out loud about possible interpretations, which was fine because after all, it was Grandpa. I've done readings here at TT&M, but in real life I've only read for one other person I knew well, a grandson, and for one stranger, a seatmate on a plane, a year or two into my Tarot practice. The woman sitting next to me saw me looking through my deck - kind of hard not to notice what someone is doing when you are pressed up against a stranger in the kind of physical intimacy that could be classified as assault in most other settings - and asked me if I knew how to "play that card game". We got into a conversation and she asked me if I would show her how the "game" was "played". I didn't feel too sure of myself but I gave it a go and gratifyingly it went well. When the woman saw how the reading actually worked she understood that it wasn't a game and participated thoughtfully with validating feedback. What a confidence booster for me, and if a similar occasion comes along I might take advantage of it, but I'm content to read for just myself.
Guest Night Shade Posted December 17, 2018 Posted December 17, 2018 I've been into Tarot for over ten years, but the first reading I did for anyone else was for Grandma[/member] on this forum. I think she liked it, so I guess it went pretty well.

Look up "understatement" in the dictionary and your comment is the prime example. I am honored to be your first querent.

DanielJUK Posted December 18, 2018 Posted December 18, 2018 It took about a year before I read for someone else. I think I could have read for someone else sooner but it was about confidence! It was probably about 2 years before I read for someone else on a forum. Reading for others here really improves your skills and helps you practice but it's a jump to get into it! You learn so much with the practical usage and feedback though! This forum has two great features to help people read for others.... 1/ the mentorship scheme which you can read all about and sign up to here. You are partnered with someone with more experience on the forum and can try out anything you want or get some help on areas you find difficult. I think it's aim is to get people into reading for others, helping them find confidence. It's a great way of practising but does take a commitment to put work into it. It's not too heavy or time intensive though. The actual exchanges and classroom are only for students and mentors, so it's hidden off from the main forum to give a safe learning place type feel. 2/ the exchange circles. Every month we have different circles where you sign up, then you get paired with someone and you do the monthly spread with the partner (you read for them) and then exchange feedback on each other's readings. The signs up are around the first week of every month, so closed right now. We have a Newbies Circle for people who want to try a circle for the first time, it is a friendly environment where you can make mistakes and with smaller spreads. Have a look at the Circles area here sometime, you will see there are threads where you put your name down towards the top. If you want to take part, wait for the January ones to be posted in the first week of Jan and you are more than welcome to try the Newbies Circle if you want to give it a go, I am a Circle Host there and so slightly biased but we do welcome people who want to try out reading for others, that is it's purpose :) Just wanted to offer some suggestions what the forum can offer if you want to try reading for others, but in your own time, please don't feel rushed! It is a thing for when you feel ready :) Paid Readings like others have said is a totally different matter! When you feel you can do a professional job for someone with the cards I guess :)
