PathWalker Posted January 30, 2019 Posted January 30, 2019 Gregory sent me some loose cards for my patchwork decks project (Thank Yu!) but a couple are not identified. Can anyone help with these (descriptions only for now, photos later if we're all really stuck) There's a single card from a deck which has an outstanding back design showing a little boy in a space suit floating above a planet, with xmas parcels floating about? The card is 18 - has a lot of xmas themed symbols, boy in space helmet making a snowman, I'm thinking this is some specific xmas themed deck but I don't know it. Anyone? There are 2 cards from a deck with a William Morris type fabric print as the back design. Very much fine art painting style to the fronts, both Pentacle cards, one a woman offering a loaf of bread to a traveler (6) and one welcoming a man stepping off a boat (1o). Ring any bells please? Thank you thank you :) PathWalker
PathWalker Posted February 1, 2019 Author Posted February 1, 2019 here we go with pictures. The first two are from the same deck, pentacles suit, backs like a William Morris fabric?
PathWalker Posted February 1, 2019 Author Posted February 1, 2019 The other card may not even be from a taro pack for all I know? An oracle deck maybe? Card is numbered 18, the 'spaceboy' is the back. Thank you PathWalker
Wanderer Posted February 1, 2019 Posted February 1, 2019 Hi PathWalker[/member] . That 'space boy' card is weird... but the hammer, sickle and star are of course from the flag of the Soviet Union. Given the oriental features, I'd guess this is from the Soviet Far East, possibly including the areas around Mongolia. The star being part of the flag also does weaken the Tarot connection to The Star... so I'm really wondering whether this is instead part of a children's game..? Children in space suits seem to have been a common motif from there in the 60s and 70s.
PathWalker Posted February 1, 2019 Author Posted February 1, 2019 Ah interesting! It came from Gregory's collection of odd/spare cards, but she is busy with other stuff at the moment, and probably can't remember it anyway LOL But someone might place it. That's the joy of patchwork deck making - you get to see all sorts of odd things, and chat with lots of folks. Thank you
PathWalker Posted February 2, 2019 Author Posted February 2, 2019 Anyone have any ideas on these please? Thank you PathWalker
queenofwans Posted February 2, 2019 Posted February 2, 2019 The second set is from the Chinese Propaganda Art Tarot by James Battersby. You can find it here: http://www.jamesbattersby.co.uk/store/c13/The_Chinese_Propaganda_Art_Tarot.html He's most well known for the Twisted Tales Tarot.
gregory Posted February 2, 2019 Posted February 2, 2019 I can tell you when I get back, but yes, the revolutionary propaganda one, and the Christmas ones are one of his too. I have a si I feeling one was an advertisement card with one deck on the front and another on the back. Everything hits the fan on Monday, but Tuesday I should be able to check. Xx
gregory Posted February 2, 2019 Posted February 2, 2019 Oh, and I can do the one with fancy script, but I cannot recall its name at this moment.
reall Posted February 2, 2019 Posted February 2, 2019 Oh, and I can do the one with fancy script, but I cannot recall its name at this moment. yep, it's this one; http://www.aeclectic.net/tarot/cards/tarot-of-inspiration/ I remember seeing it on pinterest by same person who added my pam's vintage!:)
gregory Posted February 3, 2019 Posted February 3, 2019 I just remembered and came back to say that. Thanks, reall.
gregory Posted February 3, 2019 Posted February 3, 2019 The snowy one is probably the propaganda one in the winter version, and the space boy may be the Christmas. But they will have to wait.
gregory Posted February 3, 2019 Posted February 3, 2019 The image called 18 is the moon from the Chinese propaganda one but with the winter border they used for the Christmas King's Journey. Found it on a bag in his store. But it seems not to be the one used in the actual deck, and has borders, which the actual winter deck doesn't. But I emailed the artist, who has no recollection of the image of the little space boy "back", and says it isn't in any of their decks, though it is clearly "theirs" - so, just a promo to fill space, I think !
gregory Posted February 3, 2019 Posted February 3, 2019 But he seems to have changed it. Sorry for multiple posts, but it's so much of a pain editing on my tablet!
PathWalker Posted February 3, 2019 Author Posted February 3, 2019 Thank you all so much! Never even seen the Chinese Properganda Art deck before - making patchwork decks is always such a great learning journey as well as fun! Many thanks PathWalker
reall Posted February 3, 2019 Posted February 3, 2019 I just remembered and came back to say that. Thanks, reall. you are welcome! happy to beat you to it means I'm pro!:D p.s tablet & auto correct are worst!x,x facepalm lol
bookshop Posted February 7, 2019 Posted February 7, 2019 I love the Propaganda art decks! I've been trying to convince myself not to buy it for a while — mainly my hangup is being unable to decide which version to get, regular or winter!
PathWalker Posted February 7, 2019 Author Posted February 7, 2019 Ah, we've turned into an enabling thread LOL :)
gregory Posted February 8, 2019 Posted February 8, 2019 See above for further info on the little red boy. You clearly have a one off card and had better save it to auction in your dotage ! The ACTUAL moon card from that deck is attached - no border ! - and the back would have had a red rooster. ETA the red line is because the artist kindly sent me the image - I was too lazy to fire up my scanner - and it still shows the bleed line - which is NOT on the deck. For those ordering. Ah, we've turned into an enabling thread LOL :) See - some cards changed, so she NEEDS both ;)
