~D~ Posted August 14, 2017 Posted August 14, 2017 1) So your shuffling your deck and your going to do a 3 card smaller reading... Out falls a card as your shuffling, so where you going to use it in your lay out? Ive never used the one that falls out, due to not sure where id put it? To clarify? or as a beginning first card? What would you do? 2)Where would you put it in a larger reading?
RavenOfSummer Posted August 14, 2017 Posted August 14, 2017 Often when a card jumps out at me, I place it down above where I'm going to lay out the spread. I usually consider it as a theme for the reading, a guide card or an overall message about what I'm seeking. Other times, if a card jumps out at me while shuffling, if I'd been planning to do a particular spread, I sometimes scrap the spread and just lay out a few cards intuitively, including the one that jumped out. Sometimes it feels like a message- "You don't need a spread. The cards will tell you what you need to know. Just move freely, trust your instincts." So for me it depends, but it's usually one of those two things that I end up doing. I almost always incorporate the jumper if one comes out at me. For a longer spread, for me it depends on the layout. If I'm working with a spread that's kind of circle-shaped I have sometimes put a jumper in the center. Above the spread can also work for most layouts. If I'm doing a longer spread where I shuffle in between laying down each card (I don't usually work with spreads that way, but I do it for the multi-day spreads like the Sacred Days of Yule and Sacred Days of Midsummer spreads), and if a card jumps out while I'm in the process of pulling a card for a particular position, then I'll sometimes place two cards down sharing a single position and read them together.
~D~ Posted August 14, 2017 Author Posted August 14, 2017 RavenOfSummer, I like the idea "theme for the reading"... I like all of what you said there....great ideas :)

Trogon Posted August 15, 2017 Posted August 15, 2017 This has very rarely happened for me. And, to be honest, if it lands face-down, I generally put it back in the deck somewhere random and just go on. If it were to fall face-up ... I'm not sure how I'd take it. I can't recall it happening yet. If it did, I'd probably use it as a theme card as well. A card that kind of sets the tone for the reading.
Esk Posted August 20, 2017 Posted August 20, 2017 First I didn't pay attention to the jumpers and just looked at the cards for curiosity. But interrestingly I noticed that sometimes these cards appeared in the reading or at the base of the deck, or was coherent with the reading done. That's when i started to take them into account. I often consider them as a general message for the question asked, or as an extra information. However usually I don't consider them as important as the cards you pull for the reading. But when the jumper card appears in the reading I take it as the most important card, and I pay more attention to its message. However, the most difficult thing for me with jumpers, is to identify which one really brings a message and which one has jumped because of a poor shuffling. I know that sometimes for me jumpers mean nothing else than "pay attention to the way you shuffle your cards".

I'm quoting Esk here because I basically deal with jumpers in the same way! :) So when it happens I usually look at the card, put it back and shuffle some more. Then proceed like I intended to. If it doesn't show up in the reading, whatever. If it does, then for me the meaning of this particular card will be enhanced. Also, like Esk and many others, I have my bad days and if I feel clumsy and drop many cards, I simply disregard it altogether. :P
mariannehj Posted August 28, 2017 Posted August 28, 2017 If a single card jumpes out I use it as a "layer" above the other cards. (Really difficult to explain - please ask if this dosen't makes sense) I read the other cards with the jumped-out card in mind. It kind of sets the mode for the other cards. I don't know if anyone else use this method - but it feels like the right thing to do for me.
Ace Posted August 28, 2017 Posted August 28, 2017 Nowadays, I sometimes have a small "pack" of several cards that end up left behind when I finish shuffling. I don't quite know how, they just fall off the bottom. So I put them on top and use them first to lay out the spread. barb
Page of Ghosts Posted September 4, 2017 Posted September 4, 2017 I don't have an established practise for jumper cards. Sometimes I've used them for a spread but recently I've just felt I'm a really sloppy shuffler so I just put them back in and shuffle untill I feel the deck is ready for me to pick the cards at the top.
Ephemeridae Posted September 5, 2017 Posted September 5, 2017 I'm also just a sloppy shuffler. I'm pretty good with regular playing cards but these cards are so ungainly large and there are so many and my coordination hasn't caught up to the task yet, lol Last night after a lot of dropped cards during shuffling, one landed face up right in front of me. It was the Four of Cups. I think my deck was saying, "would you please pay attention!?"
chongjasmine Posted September 27, 2017 Posted September 27, 2017 I will just put it as extra information. Usually, if a card jumps out, it means some higher power is at work, and wants to speak to you. I will not ignore such a card.

What would you do? 2)Where would you put it in a larger reading? I try not to make my read rigid with unbreakable boundaries; I like to just go with the flow as much as possible. If a card jumps out (especially repetitively) it can be read in the position you're shuffling for, but should also be read seperately as a suprise or strong n force acting in the situation that will become better known soon. I consider jumpers esp repeat jumpers the most important card to acknowledge. I'm not sure how many other people read like this but I read based off how they fall or fly out to for ex a card will jump and land on me facing me on my chest and I'm reading for a relationship; this has been read as something internal; dear to my heart; or as a very powerful force in my life. Or I'm reading for future and one jumps out on the table at the same time another drops out hits the floor to the right. I will read the closer as the near future the one on the floor as the later future. As they fall out I read the feeling I get from that motion and placement in addition to the card; i hope others do this; it's less complicated than it sounds! XD
EmpyreanKnight Posted September 27, 2017 Posted September 27, 2017 I very rarely get jumpers, but when I do I still keep it aside and proceed to draw the requisite cards for my spread. It would later act as a supplement to my reading, providing a general tenor to my interpretation or acting as a clarifier of sorts when a part of my reading seems vague or disjointed.
greycats Posted September 28, 2017 Posted September 28, 2017 Well, if it falls to the floor, it probably has dog hair on it. So I wipe it off and lay it aside till the next time. If the same thing happens whether or not the card is the same, I need to look at my technique. And maybe the cardstock.

sandrang123 Posted October 4, 2017 Posted October 4, 2017 I always consider jumpers. I don't include them in the spread, but keep them close as a card that sheds light on the spread and reading.
katrinka Posted October 10, 2017 Posted October 10, 2017 IME, jumpers and dropped cards have always been irrelevant to the reading. In the movie Nightmare Alley, if a card falls on the floor, whatever is indicated by the reading will happen fast. And if the card lands face down, it's bad. I suspect this is Hollywood rather than actual Tarot folklore, and I haven't had enough cards jump or fall to test it properly. It's interesting, though.
Trogon Posted October 11, 2017 Posted October 11, 2017 Heh. I was looking at the recent posts on this thread and was reminded of one particular time. I am not positive, but I think it was with the Tarot Illuminati, when it was new. The first time I shuffled it, as I "bridged" the deck, about 2/3 of the deck became "jumpers"! Kind of went all over the table ... ::)
