DownUnderNZer Posted February 19, 2019 Posted February 19, 2019 Tarot & Boxes When it comes to buying or, if say, a person was a collector: A Does a Tarot deck devalue a lot if there isn't any box. B Devalue somewhat if the box has signs of shelf wear or any light wear and tear. Eg Discoloration/Scratches. C Does not lose value if all the cards are there in perfect condition. Box or No box. Been wondering this for a wee while... DND X/
PathWalker Posted February 19, 2019 Posted February 19, 2019 I'm a 'bit' of a collector, and I do enjoy vintage decks so for me: I would pass over a deck with no box if there was any chance of finding the same deck with it's packaging. I would be unlikely to buy a large boxed set if it no longer had it's book. I look for the LWB to be present if one came with the deck. I do accept somewhat worn boxes if it is commensurate with the age of the deck - so last's year deck should have a perfect box and so on, but a 1980s deck can have a box worn at the corners, missing a flap and with some fading to the box edge :) But basically I buy the very best that I can afford. PW
Raggydoll Posted February 19, 2019 Posted February 19, 2019 Yes, when it’s missing its box then the value is significantly lower. If it’s a truly vintage deck then it will have a bit of wear (unless it’s ‘new old stock’). If the box is damaged and not just worn then that will also lower the value but it’s still way better than no box at all. I think it’s important to differentiate an OOP deck from a vintage deck. If the deck was produced 10-15 years ago it could be OOP but I would not consider it vintage. And you would definitely expect it to be in better condition than one that’s 30+ years. The term ‘vintage’ is a tricky and badly abused one. A deck from the 90s could possibly be considered vintage, but I mainly use that term on decks that are from the 80s or earlier.
DownUnderNZer Posted February 20, 2019 Author Posted February 20, 2019 PathWalker & Raggydoll Thanks. Really appreciated. I noticed last year that a deck I got even though bubble wrapped got a bit of a ding in the corner probably with how I put it away when in and out looking for various decks. The cards are pristine and the box is in good form except now it has a bit of a dinged corner. I bought it at a great price only I cannot remember what I paid as I might have bought a few at the same time from the same seller. It was one I had been hunting down for about 2 or 3 yrs possibly longer! Both of you have given some valid information and hope this will help others if they become collectors or have decks they want to keep to leave to others. Whatever the situation. I think I will pay better attention to how I keep my decks. DND
gregory Posted February 20, 2019 Posted February 20, 2019 I collect, but not for value. I open all mine, so no "still shrink-wrapped" stuff. I try and keep the boxes nice (I do keep them all) but - well, I use them, so... All mine go to my daughter, who will manage to get them to people who will truly value them AS I DO, not for the money. She has a list and tarotista contacts. (PS do NOT PM me about this. :P Anyone who does will not get on the list - or, if there already, will be knocked off !)

DownUnderNZer Posted February 20, 2019 Author Posted February 20, 2019 I have come to somewhat collect although not intentional, but now I'm more discerning when it comes to buying and am not in FOMO mode. I will still go for what I like whether $20 or $$ if something appeals, but usually it is the colours and artwork that does it for me, not the value. But I do like to take good care of everything I have and need to make sure everything is in decent condition. When I go in and out of things whether bubble wrapped or not - I will make sure to double check that it is packed back in properly from now on. Now I know boxes can be important as well as LWBS - not just decks themselves. A Tarotista list - now that is something to consider. Thanks! DND X/ I collect, but not for value. PathWalker Posted February 20, 2019 Posted February 20, 2019 Like Gregory I do use mine once I have them. I was talking about what I BUY, but I don't give a fig about selling them or passing them on, they are for my use and enjoyment and I use them all :) I do keep notes about the when and when I bought them, but that's because I have an obsessive steak LOL Enjoy your decks PathWalker

Spellcheck strikes again. I have detailed notes about EVERYTHING - including where I got them.
DownUnderNZer Posted February 20, 2019 Author Posted February 20, 2019 I have no tracking of anything except on some of them, if not most, the original price has been put using a label printer of what I paid. Some are in their original boxes (delivery) and I think the invoices might be in with them, if any. Some have only been opened once and then re-boxed and stored away. E.g. Tabula Mundi and the other Tabula. The ones I think are mass marketed are all on shelves, but in their original delivery boxes. Maybe I need to keep better records. Is it really important. DND X/
PathWalker Posted February 20, 2019 Posted February 20, 2019 Well you all know I have dislexsia :) (and only one coffee so far) STREAK, ok? Really your own collection, it's up to you to do what you want. Sounds like you don't use some of them much, that's fine, their yours. Sounds like you think you might want to sell them on again someday, okay you do that :) If it's important to you to make a profit then I guess knowing what they cost you in the first place is logical. But you do whatever makes you happy, there is no 'one way' to enjoy your collection :) PathWalker

I’ve gotten teased in the past for funny spelling errors I’ve made. But I totally blame my phone, some days it’s just not cooperating at all (maybe it would work better if I fed it coffee?) I don’t worry about resale values of my decks. I use them and even modify them however I wish. It’s just what feels right to me.

No, records aren't important - except that if you have as many as I do, sometimes they are absolutely vital for checking and so on. As a few of you know, they were invaluable just recently when I had misplaced a deck; I was able to do a complete stock-check based on my records of where things are stored, and I found it :) As for spellcheck - let us just say I used to work in public health. I had to proofread other people's documents. In the end, except when they were about sexual health, I simply used to set up an auto-replace - Public for Pubic. This after someone sent out an annual report with Pubic Health all over it. They were very embarrassed. And these days whenever I want to type short it comes out shirt, and wrong comes out as wring.... But that steak was RATHER fine; I enjoyed it. A bright light in a grey day.

Really off topic but we have spell check in Swedish as well, and once I was just about to send a text message to a person who had replied to one of my adds and wanted to buy a thing from me, and my phone had switched one word for another so it basically suggested that this person could come over and cuddle with me. I almost had a heart attack when I saw it but luckily I had not pressed send. Since then I double and triple check so that I at least am not suggesting anything improper to complete strangers X-D

bookshop Posted February 23, 2019 Posted February 23, 2019 When I first started buying decks, I didn't realize the boxes were a thing, so I chucked all the boxes and put all my decks in sturdier wooden or cloth boxes or bags, etc. In some cases, like for the Celestial Stick People, the box was less than useless at protecting the deck and even though I wanted to keep it, it so rapidly experienced wear and tear that I finally had to get rid of it recently and find a better box just to protect my cards. So my tarot shelves now are an interesting mix of boxes! In general, I don't buy the decks except to use them (or at least take them out frequently and admire them), so I'd rather have them in places that make them easy to get to. For instance, the Cosmos Tarot box is stunning and very durable, but it's also lacking any divots, which makes the deck itself SO hard to get out of the box that I wind up just leaving the deck lying around half the time, just so I can get to it more easily. Harumph. I've thought of getting a new box for it just for this reason — but I guess this means I would also have to keep the original box, just in case I ever wanted to pass it on to someone else. So many things I'm learning here!
PathWalker Posted February 23, 2019 Posted February 23, 2019 Try a strip of paper or ribbon that goes under the deck and sticks out either side - then you an lift it out? :)
DownUnderNZer Posted February 23, 2019 Author Posted February 23, 2019 I am gonna remember the ribbon trick too. DND X/ .....or i could do that X-D
