Drawing the Death card for the first time. Anything to worry about?

Hi all. Hope you are well.

I am still new to tarot and draw a card each day. Today I drew the Death card for the first time and wondered if it's anything to worry about? I am probably over thinking but thought I would see what you all thought. I use the Gilded tarot deck if that makes any difference.

Well... we'll need a bit more to go on than that!  ;D  What were you asking? (If you weren't asking anything specific, what do you have in mind when you draw a card - advice for a the day, a message you need to understand, or..?) And what do you think it was telling you?

Death is a very complex card (aren't they all!) but rarely means actual death. Interpret it yourself first, and I'm sure people will have suggestions.  :)

Thanks for your reply.

Sorry, I should have gone more into what I was asking the cards. I usually draw one daily re the day ahead. When I drew the card I also had in the back of my mind that (don't laugh) somebody seemed to have purposely strewn a bag of rubbish over our drive yesterday. We are convinced it was one of our neighbours but nothing has ever happened like this before. We have lived here five years and the dustman did not take two of the bags yesterday and when one of our friends used the drive all was fine after dustman had been but later on when we came home the sack was strewn all over the drive and our bins had been moved since our friend had used the drive.

Death has become one of my favorite cards in the deck since I got the Shadowscapes tarot. I really connect with the imagery as it reflects the meaning for me.

I see the death card as the ultimate transformation, the Phoenix rising from the ashes! It is a major change, an end of one thing, and the beginning of something new. A closing of a door and another one opening. Letting go of the old to embrace the new. Being a major arcana card, this is probably a drastic change of some sort. With death comes rebirth, and this cycle is a major part of life.

It's important to remember context when you do a reading. If you pull a card for the day, that is a small energy, just for 24 hours. So that is different to say, tell me about this year? or looking into the new business you are setting up which you have invested so much energy and money in (As an example) or how is your relationship going? So any card that comes up for a day is a small mundane message in context.

The Death card is about a renewal and moving on. It's highly unlikely you are not going to survive the day, it very rarely actually means death :) I have personally never actually seen it represent a literal death in my readings, cards have shown me death in the past but really not obvious messages that I only found out with hindsight, it wasn't a really obvious sign for me. But Death means endings, it's a major card and so it's forced on us. You will find out something is ending in your life during that day. It could be your fave tv series or film series, your contract with something you sign up for. But it's not about dying, it's about transformation and how you deal with this. It's a reminder that we have cycles and change always going on in our lives.

So you will find out that something comes to an end and something new will begin. But don't fear this card, it's something which has to happen and will be better for you in the end. When I did daily cards I always looked with curiosity how they would manifest rather than worry with how it will happen. I realised tarot can be so nuanced so see how it happens. Look out for themes of transformation, change and transition today :) Death works best if you let go and go along with it, sometimes it's sad but something new is coming  :heartz:

I typed that before I saw your reply, about the rubbish I am not sure how it would fit here. Endings of your rubbish being collected? Endings of a good relationship with your neighbours? just some ideas.

Thanks that makes perfect sense and has opened my eyes to the deeper meaning of the card.

Thanks so much for the detailed response. Again an answer that makes perfect sense. I will keep my eyes peeled. ;)

Thanks for the extra info, unknownpleasures[/member]!

So, as Daniel and Aspensage explained, this card is about change more than literal death. Being a major, it normally refers to a fundamental shift; something that has long-lasting implications. The fact that you mentioned the saga with the rubbish makes it seem as though this may be the focus... and one possibility is that it's responding to the death of your peace of mind about your neighbours. You said this has never happened before, but you're convinced it was one of them. So, this represents a major change in your view of your place in the neighbourhood, potentially... at least, that might make sense, possibly..?

Thanks so much that makes perfect sense. That could be the case re the neighbours as I have had my doubts.

I have also literally just been told that I am moving office soon and my best friend at work will now be in another office. It could be both of the things mentioned here.

here, if bags are left loose, as opposed to inside a closed can, what usually happens is dogs...drawn by interesting smells :) Don't take it to heart and death any neighbor relationships. Your death card says the world has bigger fish to fry.

I like this response :)

I kept trying to tell my wife that it was dogs or kids messing about but she isn't convinced which made me doubt myself. Our neighbour does move our bins a little sometimes when he needs to open the doors wide on his van as his drive is next to ours and both are small. I think we just worry it's going to turn in to a tit-for-tat thing.

That's what I would probably assume it was about. Unless the trash thing happens again, I'd assume dogs (or other animals - here there are sometimes raccoons and they are called "trash pandas" for a reason!) until I had good reason to assume otherwise.

My card for Tuesday this week was the 10 of Swords, so I was a touch apprehensive of what that might mean. It turns out a small portion of a freelance job I was working on - that I had been wondering when the proof would be approved as the deadline was imminent - had been re-done, unknown to me, by another designer. (Incorrectly, LOL!) So I figured it was telling me not to worry about getting an approval for that piece, that it was done and over with. For a daily card I tend to think the card will relate to something happening that day, but not necessarily something earth shattering. If I get 6 of cups, I inevitably run into or hear from a client or friend I haven't seen in a while. The card I got for the US midterm election day was The Tower - I took the two falling to be "Republican control of the house" and Jeff Sessions, who resigned that day. Major changes, and important, but not disasters. Just a major shakeup.

Thanks so much. Yeah, I am trying not to assume the worst. I said to my wife, if someone had that much of a problem they would knock on our door.

I totally understand re what you are saying about the cards. as I am new to tarot I am still finding my feet and as a worrier I tend to try and look too deeply sometimes lol.

If you find the cards worrying for your day and you are not always going to get The Sun or really obviously nice cards for your day, pull them at the end of your day. That way you don't need to worry and can analyse what happened that day in review, rather than predictively. You don't want to worry about how cards will turn out, just observe them because they can happen in all sorts of really interesting ways. I like a predictive reading about how a day I will go but I try to not to react to the card, just see how it develops :)

That's a very good and interesting idea and one I will certainly try. Thanks :)

Hi all. Hope you are well.

What was the reading about? That will help you understand the card’s role.

In tarot, the Death card means there will be a transformation taking place. It may be a tumultuous period for you, but you will be just fine. I’ve gotten Tower and Death together and lived to tell the tale. :)

I’m newer to tarot too. It’s been a strange path for me, but I’ve loved it and hope it helps you too.

If I were drawing Death as a personal card of the day, I’d keep my eyes open.. not for a tragic event or unexpected change, but more for an opportunity or reason in my life to put an end to something, or put something to rest. Death isnt always something that happens, but possibly it’s time to MAKE something happen. What is it in your life that you need to wrap up and move on from?  This is of course just one take on our friend Death. He is change, and although he brings many our way, he also urges us to create our own change, open our own doors  Death can be very forceful, and can also be subtle. But it is ALWAYS final. Whether it comes TO you, or you initiate it, move on.

The way I understand it, you’re using the same tarot deck every day for this, and you’ve got two reasons for doing the reading? The major reason being that you want to learn the tarot more, and the minor reason to learn about the day? And if that’s the case, then whatever card you pull would be as a response to that.

So, possibly it’s mainly a situation where your tarot deck is a teaching mode, and on that day your mind mode was maybe receptive to learn more about that card in particular?

And because the major arcana is oftentimes about major energies going on, rather than the details of mundane life, then possibly the card speaks about the underlying period of time that that day is part of, and that day being overall influenced by a transformative energy right now?

If so, then that ”transformative theme of spirit” in your life right now, could or might possibly be better tapped into and felt when you go deep within, rather than to look for correlations or an event in the outer world and workings.

That’s just one possible way to look at it, of many. What you yourself feel it relates to is of course significant, most of the time. And there could be so many interpretations.

Far as Death meaning a symbolic transformation, rather than a physical death, I’d just say that that depends on the deck. It’s happened once that I pulled that card and it truly was referring to death, but it was a deck that has proven itself time and again to be sharply predictive of near-by actual events.

And so, I’d say ask your deck various shapes and forms of questions and find out where it shines. That’s what I do with every new deck, I get to know it better so I can purpose it where it belongs, and it’s vastly helpful... Basically, I let the deck tell me who it is, rather than define its identity beforehand, by what I’d like it to be...

Find out whether it’s a deck for general readings, a deck for deep spiritual answers, an everyday lighter deck, a predictive deck, a deck that doesn’t speak with you at all, a deck for family matters, for relationships, a deck that gives the blunt negatives of a situation or one that delivers even the harsher things in a feelgood way. You’ll know by the way it reads, or the way it refuses to read. And once you know, you’ll know better too in what context you should interpret the cards you pull.

That’s how I know that I’ve got one deck where Death is Death, and that in all other decks I’ve got so far, I wouldn’t expect them to refer to the actual physical event, at all.

So, in conclusion, and also based on your reading, I personally wouldn’t be too worried about it.
