On a serious note though, look into Carl Jung and his "family system" he spoke of them in terms of archetypes within the individual psyche.  He talked about these inner constellations of consciousness, the Great Father, the Great Mother, the Divine Child and the Divine Maiden. In his teachings we find a quaternity just the same as we find in the courts, King, Queen, Knight, Page also in the suits Wands, Cups, Swords, Pentacles and broken down into their simple archetypal roles we get Authority, Nourishment, Independance and Innocence. Still sounds a little overwhelming?  Well that's only 16 personalities that they represent 32 when you include their opposite counterparts (as in reversals, psst little secret - I don't do reversals but I do in the courts 😉 ) plus giving then 32 personality traits (that these archetypes do have and we all know them very well indeed. Allow me to embellish each of the courts can be broken down thus into a Supporter / Detractor & Resource / Challenge.

For example we all know that the Knight of Swords is a Champion right?

Well there is your Supporter right there, so in reverse in his Detractor role he must be a Rival... Right?

So lets consider his personality, what's a Champions biggest Recourse? Insight, that's how he keeps his cool head on, so the Challenge is Anger where he loses the plot and charges in head on without thinking.

So depending on the queerants question or where in the spread a member of the royal court falls, I read them as either a person, or a trait within.

That's my take on them anyway 🧙‍♀️

how do you usually read court cards? Do they represent people for you or do they carry some other meaning?

A court card in a reading can represent either 1.  a specific person -- either the Querent themself or a person in the Querent's life or 2.  the energies associated with the court card.

Before I have ever even seen the cards face up, I have done a lot of spiritual preparation in prayer and meditation, chanting, etc.  So when I read, I know that I am receiving Guidance from the highest levels of the Spiritual World.  So for each court card I simply ask if the card represents a specific person, and often this is the Querent, or the energies associated with that court card.  Then I know how to proceed.

Also I so use reversals.  When a card appears has reversed, I pray and ask if I should put it upright or leave it reversed.  It it stays reversed, then the person that the card represents is experiencing the challenges inherent in a given court personality or that type of energy is affecting the Querent's world.

So for example a reversed King of Wands might be someone who is wrestling with having to be the center of attention all of the time and being a drama queen/king; or that kind of self absorbed behavior is playing out in the Querent's life.

Have you written a book on your take with the Court Cards and their 32 archetypes? I am interested.

Book, written by me lol no 😄 now that would be something.

I have read many books though on Carl Jung and his archetypal psychology. It was how I was first taught to read the courts and I've never really felt a connection in  any other way of interpreting them. Some by race and colour of skin I found totally nonsensical, skin colour has nothing to do with the mind nor the spiritual plane, neither does sex for that matter.

Anyway I searched one of the books I was passed many moons ago that opened me up to this concept.

King Warrior Magician Lover, by Moore and Gillette

And I was directed to this page. I've not seen this before but it really brings home what I am trying to say here. Plus I've just found these cards which look amazing.

I was and still a bit confused by the courts.

So instead of complicating I tried to de-complicate things.

I see it as follows:

The Page tries- new beginning

The knight Does- Action

The Queen feels-Patience

The King Knows- Knowledge

Energy wise:

Queens are water / or Full Yin

Kings are the Fire or Full Yang

Knights are the Air (Wood) or Small Yang

Pentacles are Earth (Metal) or Small Yin
