Not sure if this the proper place to ask this question. Beginner here. Can you use the tarot for insight into another person? For example, I wanted to see what the cards would show if I asked about my mother. I was vague in the question. The cards I pulled don't represent her at all, but wondering if the cards actually reflected what I needed to relate to my mother. Just curious.

it sounds to me like you could use more focus on your questions. (as you say you were vauge )

for myself I don't focus on how does x see me or what does y need to know ..

tbh, when I read for others in live experiences, I ask them wouldt' you want to know what you can do to change the relationship for the better..

some people I think do well in divining informatin on others, like some do well in reading for themselves or doing world divination events.

so what you are doing as a student is finding out what you are good at,in regards to reading the tarot.

so I would make a journal of the cards that were shown to you,  put them away somewhere in your computer or notebook I could be that they will show their wisdom yet.

I would ask what you need to know about your mother. (and if there is a specific reason you need to know something, add that specific - as in "to help her make friends"; "to help me get along with her"; "to help her get over the loss of her husband" and the like.) Just to ask for "insight into her" is in my view too vague, and also comes too close to reading about someone without their consent.

YES, to those who will show up in a minute, I do know that other people show up in readings not specifically about them, and what one picks up then is in general directly relevant to the sitter - but that isn't, for me, the same as doing a whole reading about someone who didn't ask for it and might really object.

I think I'm a lot more comfortable with reading third parties than most readers. When I'm wanting to know just general energy stuff about about someone else, I'll choose a signifier for them, shuffle thoroughly, then rifle though the deck and pull their signifier out with the surrounding cards on each side. On top of their signifier will be what they are focusing on, putting their energy towards, behind them will be the energy surrounding them, influencing them. And then, if the card was close to the top of the deck when I went digging for it, that's meaning they are like... Vibing on my level. The further I have to dig, the more distant they are to me.

I have never really tried reading about another person who was absent but I like the idea of this and may try it out.

Thank you all. This was helpful. I should clarify I wasn't trying to get inside information about my mother, but maybe what she represents.  I think or trying to look deeper into my resentment that I can't seem to drop. However,  I was vague at best in retrospect. Really vague. twelve hours later I am not really sure even what my intent was.  Maybe it was as Libra states looking into what is the energy there.  There is so much of that energetic field with family that is unspoken. Anyway.... Lesson learned here to spend more time on the question and intent.

Many people find they can get more clarity and more helpful results in this type of situation by trying something like "What do I need to understand about my feelings about _____" or try a phrasing about what the person represents in your current path, or some way that that makes it about you, your feelings, your life lessons. Or what you can do to help improve your peace of mind about the situation.

Tbh im asking only alone for myself about other people, and questions are 100% correct. So yes, you can. But it takes lots of energy and also you must know right time for stop mixing the cards for draw.
