Athena1111 Posted April 24, 2019 Posted April 24, 2019 Hey! I am Athena and I am an aspiring tarot reader. What are some tips that helped you learn tarot?
AnomalyTempest Posted April 24, 2019 Posted April 24, 2019 Welcome Athena. It's great to have new people. As for tips, many people start with pulling a card each day for insight. This could be in the morning or evening. It's also recommended by many to take notes and keep a journal. I like to write. Others may record their thoughts as opposed to writing. We also have Mentors who can help get you started here. There are probably as many ways to approach learning as there are people, and we are here to help each other find the way that best works for them.
Raggydoll Posted April 24, 2019 Posted April 24, 2019 Hey Athena and welcome to the forum! My best tip is to start by learning the traditional RWS meanings of every card. Most decks are based on RWS and the majority of tarot readers have a good grasp of RWS, so that way you’ll be able to better follow along in discussions too. Lay the foundation by studying the symbolism and understanding the structure of a tarot deck. Plus, practice as much and as often as you can. Read for yourself and others, and study the way other people read. Then allow it to take time. Journaling is great and your notes will become a valuable resource, and they will show you how far you have come. That’s how I did it anyway. These days I have assimilated all sorts of meanings into every card and then I have sort of transcended beyond them as I’m doing a lot of intuitive/psychic readings. The foundation of knowledge that I have is what made me feel confident and relaxed enough to try this other approach and let my intuition come out and play. So it’s been a very organic process :)

Madame Squee Posted April 24, 2019 Posted April 24, 2019 Welcome Athena1111[/member] X/ Wow, that's a good question! I started out at the library. I read every book they had on tarot. Then, I bought a deck I liked the looks of at my local metaphysical store. I carried it with me everywhere, taking it out and shuffling it every chance I got, being sure to look at every card last thing at night before tucking it under my pillow. About the same time, I bought a computer, hooked it up to the internet and discovered online tarot resources. ;D Then, I found my way to Aeclectic Tarot. And now, here I am at Tarot, Tea & Me. It's a wonderful place to learn about tarot and continue learning about tarot! <3
Nordica De Spell Posted April 24, 2019 Posted April 24, 2019 Hi Athena! X/ My best advice in how to begin would be to get yourself one of the hub decks, like the Marseille or the original Rider-Waite, and then spend a lot of time looking at the cards. Begin with the Major Arcana. Look at the cards individually, look at them in relation to one another, look at them in clusters, look at them when they’re spread out. Write down your impressions. Spend a while doing that, and it will take a good while, if you’re being thorough. I’m saying look at them yourself before you take on board external interpretation. *** Once you’ve done that, start learning about the Major Arcana as a whole, i.e about The Fools Journey through the cards, and how the cards come together as a cohesive story, etc. Then you could continue with learning about the individual cards in the Major Arcana, and what number they are in the deck. That’s a fair start in my opinion, and it’s a good way to begin, but it’s not the only way. The main thing is that you get going, and you don’t HAVE TO follow a specific learning system. The forum has a beginner program too. :heartz: :heartz:
