Dinosaures de Marseille On Kickstarter!

I can't be the only one who scours kickstarter and similar sites for new decks, so I wanted to create a hub for us to post about decks from kickstarter (and other crowdsourced sites) that interest us, tell people about our experiences with crowdsourced decks, and generally spread the word about these indie decks that may not be available later.

My personal favorite kickstarter deck is "The Children of Litha"- it's a beautiful deck, and the artist obviously cares a lot about tarot. You can feel the love for the craft in every card!

I have backed loads of decks on Kickstarter but sadly have virtually had to give up, because of the charges by UK customs (very low import limit) - they also charge on postage and packing AND then there's a fee of £8 from the post office, who collect the fees, before they will release the package. (I once asked if I could drive to customs and pay there; it could be cheaper. Nope.) It as much as doubles the price, so I don't look, mostly, as it depresses me !

Sure!

My latest acquisition is The Slow Tarot by Lacey Bryant. Closed a few days ago, but is still available through pre-order. In reality, that deck probably won’t become one of my favourites, but I liked the quality of the art and some of the cards very much. I think that Temperance as the elegant bartender was what finally sold me to it. And the quality of cardstock seem great. Not that all my favourites have that (ehrm Wildwood...) but it’s always a nice feature.

First of May is the planned launchdate of Joanna Nelson’s Whispering Spirits deck. As per my avatar, I LOVE the Monstarot, but missed that campaign on Kickstarter. At present date, I don’t feel the same about the WS imagery, but whom knows.

I always appreciate the links to kickstarter decks, I'm too much of a lazy bum to hunt for myself :)

Haha I’ve got you!

My most recent backing was for Taroetry: A Poetic Guid To Tarot. This one is actually a guidebook to tarot that uses poetry to interpret cards instead of words, which I find a fascinating concept! I backed that one almost instantly.

this one is a deck based on 1940’s WPA Posters. not backing this one myself, but I like the colors!

If you’re on etsy, you’ve seen 78Tarot, which is a group that does collaborative Tarot decks featuring 78 different artists. They are kickstarting what I believe is their 6 or 7 deck, who’s theme is Elementals HERE I need more unity to my decks, personally, but I LOVE the art styles in here.

None of the others on Kickstarter RN (as of April 9) have really caught my attention, but there’s about 20 or so projects going on (including the ones linked here) when you search the keyword “tarot” so I’d give it a check if you’re interested!

A new deck I'm eyeing on Kickstarter: The "This Might Hurt" Tarot

From the kickstarter:

This Might Hurt Tarot is a modern deck in the Rider-Waite-Smith tradition. Keeping time-honored symbolism and imagery, but losing the medieval context, this deck is designed to be both easy to read and highly relatable. Clothing and scenery are modernized, diversity is embraced, and queerness is lovingly acknowledged.

It looks really good and it's definitely my jam. Might end up pledging to it

In the absence of my PC since being away in Easter, I was not active here in the forum. Instead on my mobile, I discovered Kickstarter...

I have backed:

The Heretical Fates Tarot

Sigil Arcanum Tarot: A Symbolic Journey

This deck might need all the help it can to get financed, so please consider joining in. I think it looks gorgeous.

I also ordered some decks that were previously funded but still are available:

The Cheimonette Tarot Deck

This deck is currently offered with an international discount. I also got a nice mail from the artist behind the deck.

The Slow Tarot

This is the deck that Nordica De Spell[/member] mentioned.

Maybe the order of four decks was a bit much at once, as I also have the same problem as gregory[/member] with VAT and post office charges. I dare not think about how much this will cost me in addition to what I have already paid :bugeyed:

Looks like you’ve got a lot to digest there!

Far as VAT, I do what you do, push the order button and figure I’ll deal with the customs bill later. By the time the deck arrives, it’s usually on next months bill anyways. NOT the responsible way of doing it, but I want my tarot decks with a lot of fun and accessibility, as in Yay! I could afford it! And that feeling for sure wouldn’t be there if I actually sat myself down with the actual costs  ;;) :D

Btw, The Cheimonette looks lovely, and I would sweep it up right away!! ...unfortunately, as per above policy I’m really broke at the moment, and can’t even afford the deck cost itself

Ah well, there’s always The Arthur Rackham Oracle to look forward to, now with gold edges...

Congrats. on your acquisitions. It’s always so exciting with new deck arrivals!  <3 :heartz:

I look at these Tarot projects on Kickstarter, and I want to cry ...))
It's all like a farce. Circus.Tarot egregor turned into....hm...tasteless, cheap pop-trash. Like a tatooed Justin Bieber.

I feel like that may be a bit unfair; people express their interpretations and love for things in different ways. It may not be what's traditional or standard, but in the end, a lot of love goes into the projects; there has to be, to create 78 different cards, after all 😄

I think that one of the most beautiful things about the internet is that it opens up a lot of doors from people of different backgrounds to be exposed to things that they may not have had the opportunity to experience otherwise! I may not always understand how they demonstrate their love (there's a clown tarot on Kickstarter that gives me the heebie-jeebies!) but so long as their interpretations bring no harm to people, I don't see anything wrong with unique takes on tarot

and @Penthasilia that looks like an amazing deck!! Oh man it really fits my aesthetic of dreamy/colorful; thank you for sharing!

The majority of my decks are kickstarter decks. I like to check for decks a couple times a month. I like supporting projects like that and it's such a great way of finding unique decks. My favorite finds so far are the Marigold Tarot, Mesquite Tarot, and the Moon Power Tarot. Thankfully I don't have had to deal with customs. I also recently pledged for PhantasMeow's Tarot deck and The Deck of Queens. I really can't help myself

Why are you so hard and sarcastic at the efforts that creators put into their tarot cards.  There have been some really wonderful works of art and creativity.

l bought the Visconti Modrone through Kickstarter and it is a truly beautiful deck by Lo Scarabeo.

In fairness, we trashed decks before kickstarter existed too 🙂

Poor LoS and their multi-language titles and women drawn for 12 year old boy's dreams.

I think it's fair to criticize art and artists. If you're going to put your work out there, be prepared for feedback. It's the nature of the beast.

I mean, honestly, some of the ...er, stuff, that is out there really ought not be.

Just because you can do something doesn't necessarily mean that you should...

Yeah - there was a whole trash this deck thread on AT ! (well, it was called de-enabling...) Julia Cuccia-Watts showed up to trash her own deck once - it was wonderful. But a couple of over sensitive creators threw wobblies and we were forced to tone it down

I try not to look at kickstarter any more, because of the UK customs thing.

@fire cat pickles - er, yes.

https://www.skycladtarot.com (I do hope the creator isn't here... but REALLY...)

you know I'd rather have that than the Heros Tarot (is it that?) that I've seen for example.  This is real people, real bodies, real photography, and I am perfectly happy with nudity in a ritual setting.

Whereas dressed up cats or dogs  - never in a month of Sundays.

Mainly it's just that different people like different things isn't it?

I don’t think that I’m the right person for this deck...

Actually I just don’t understand what this brings with regard to art or divination, but I can be wrong naturally. These are just nude people in a cave (or something) in each of the cards, well...

Fair enough - I haven't brought it either, I'm just saying that what one person derides, another person might find good - I don't see what dressed up dogs brings to art or divination either, but that doesn't mean it hasn't been done.

I was being comparative, trying to say that just because a certain idea doesn't gain wide-spread approval deosn't mean that some folks somewhere might not feel it fits their requirements really well. And that's the joy of places like kickstarter - you don't have to support something if you don't like it - but it brings the idea to a wider audience and gives it a chance.

The RW symbolism is good.
I also would rather have this deck than decks of dressed up animals.

But diversity is good. It's nice that there are specials for all tastes.

Actually yes - the Heroes is also spectacularly awful. But it isn't the nudity that bothers me at all - it's the sheer ugliness - especially of the colouring.

Yes - there I agree. And it's better than Gamecrafter, where even the direst ones are actually for sale.... At least with KS, if they are bad enough they don't get the support.
