Your Thoughts On Santa Muerte 8 of Chalices?

This card has come up for me a couple times recently. From the Santa Muerte tarot, 8 of cups. I would be interested in knowing what others see in this image. When I think of 8 of cups I usually think of a person making a decision and overcoming the confusion in the 7 of cups. But she almost looks to me like she’s still thinking. Still uncertain. And the way she’s got some of the water (what I see as her emotions) spilling out but only barely... most of them are still contained. Almost like she’s just barely able to keep her emotions in control while she still ruminates over whatever is bothering her heart.

Would love to know what others see or opinions. Thanks 🙂

She seems to have a lot on her mind. All these different emotions running around. I wonder what caused this?

Yes she does! And yes ... maybe now you got me thinking about the different cups ... they could be like all kinds of different emotions ... interesting. Yes, that’s definitely what I would ask further in a reading with this!

For me it came up both in the position of myself the other day and then tonight she came up in my “hopes and fears” position. Which I had to smile slightly because I thought yep. That’s about right. I’m definitely fearful of being stuck in this place I am now of trying to figure out how to process something emotionally. It’s kind of a quandary that I’ve been wrestling with for a long time!

I would say you're in tune with this deck. Maybe now take your questions in a different direction for advice on how to get out of the quandary. It will be interesting if the 8 of Cups comes up again. If so, it should mean something different.

Wow....what an image. I usually consider the cards as facets of the story in the Rider Waite. So, in the RW 8 of Cups, the individual is walking away, leaving the fantasy world of the 7 and 8 of Cups. When I look at that card I ask myself, where is he going and I look at the card that is next to it in the direction he is walking. However, there is another context for this card if you see it astrologically. In astrology it is Saturn in Pisces, which is 12th house energy and Saturn, is a planet of discipline....ie, self discipline. She is thinking very hard about her life b/c the 12th house is the house of institutions, including jails, hospitals, sanitoriums, and betrayal, etc.....perhaps being confined possibly b/c of making choices that have led to"self-undoing". It is the house of Pisces. This person is getting ready to make changes in her life. She is walking toward the Night Sea Journey  of transformation....she is walking out of the 12th house....(Moon card if you will) which is also ruled by the Moon and the Hanged Man...to higher ground and she is thinking hard on this. Cards 13 (Death) through 18 (Moon)  are the cards of The Night Sea Journey of transformation, aka "The Dark Night of the Soul" as described by St. John of the Cross. If you look at the RW Moon card you will see the boat in the background depicting the "Night Sea Journey" of transformation. After the Moon comes the Sun and the "reborn" child. Essentially, you are looking at the ending of a fantasy due to a decision being made to walk away from 8 full cups sitting upright....b/c they are the same cups as in the 7 of Cups. He is invited to "choose in the 7 of Cups and in the 8 of Cups he/she actually chooses. I like to think he is choosing to exit the Wheel of Fortune and Samsara.....finished with repeating the the same self-destructive patterns in his or her life....iow, heading for a "rebirth." Here she is making that decision. which is life changing.

This deck must be awesome. I'm going to look for it.

Thank you! This is amazing information- so many layers explained - thank you! Yes that makes sense in terms of it being the actual reaching of a decision ... and I am going to look into more of the references you mentioned when I am able - but your summary is great and I love that it’s really a positive card of coming away from such indecision ... yes I do love this deck very much. There are some images that really strike me and this is one! Six of cups is also fabulous! The whole deck is wonderful and I’m enjoying getting in tune with it. Thank you again for your reply and perspective on this!

Your welcome Astrid.....my pleasure, actually. There is one correction I must make here and it is regarding the boat in the background of the Moon card. The boat is in the background of the Death card in the RW deck....the Death Card is the beginning of the Night Sea Journey......(that is why we label it "transformation"), and the Moon card is the end of the journey.....if you make it through the transformation and the Moon card you are gifted with 19 Sun card. It is a tough journey. I was so impressed by this card you posted that I actually went to Amazon and bought the deck right after I finished my post. I have a background in Buddhism and have studied the "Tibetan Book of the Dead" so the subject is one with which I am familiar. I'm not sure if the Mexican version of death is the same as the Tibetan version, but it is going to be enlightening, no doubt, either way. Again, I am happy that I was able to help you a bit on this reading. It is also good exercise for me, which is why I like interacting on this forum. One of the things you might look into is the 12th house of the astrological chart. In the tarot it is under the Knight of Cups which is a mutable sign and a mutable house. Both Jupiter and Neptune are rulers of this house and the astrological sign of Pisces. The card of the 8 of cups is Saturn in Pisces. So, you might enjoy learning about the 3 planets of Neptune, Jupiter and Saturn as a part of your "looking further" in this connection.......as well as the 12th house and the Knight of Cups......all of which are relevant to my interpretation here. So...I can't wait to get this deck....thanks for posting that picture of the 8 of Cups....it was so fascinating. Reminds me of the sculpture "The Thinker" by Rodin.

Thank you so much...and I’m really glad you like the deck! It resonates with me for sure and I’m just starting to really use it. I know it sounds a little crazy probably because I am now learning most people use a variety of decks but I have been using the same deck and only deck I’ve owned for about 20 years. I’m just now getting into reading for others through here and just to see how to goes. But this Santa Muerte deck was the first one I saw that I felt really tuned into that I wanted to add. Now I have a few others but think I will keep my collection at the ones I have and one that’s on its way for now! Otherwise I feel like there are too many choices lol!! But yes I do love this deck and the alternate spin on a lot of traditional meanings.

For instance the Tower has a lot of Escher type confusing images of staircases leading upside down and into each other. And so for me my take on it is a lot of confusion which I never really applied to this card before. But it is definitely an aspect of it. So I feel like I am going to be a little less traditional interpretation with this deck and more what the images really speak to me personally.

Thank you again for the valuable insight and information and history of which I had no clue! Very helpful!
