Recommendations for a First Lenormand Deck?

Featured Replies

I've been toying with the idea of looking into Lenormand and wondered what the great hive mind would suggest for a beginners deck. I did pledge for the Kickstarter of The Friars Delight, but I don't think they are going to make it to goal. So, I'm wondering what you think would be a good deck for a newbie and why. Thanks in advance!

You can't go wrong with the classics. http://gameofhopelenormand.bigcartel.com/

Blue Owl is also good, if you can find a Lenormand sized one with playing card insets. Carta Mundi is excellent. And Piatnik is a great one, wonderful stock, too.

You just want to avoid the wonky ones while you're learning. So - an image, a playing card inset, and a number, little or no embellishment.  A male Rider - on a live horse, not a bicycle, etc., because the card can also refer to feet, knees, tendons, etc., as well as livestock animals. The Tower should be a remote outpost, not an office building or pagoda. Etc. In other words, artistic license is OK once you've internalized the meanings, but in the beginning it's best to avoid that.

Additionally, uncrowded images are easier to locate in a GT. You'll be working with smaller spreads at first, but you might find yourself ready for larger ones before you feel like investing in another deck.

This is the best book on the subject, by our own @leroidetrèfle. Get it while it's still available! https://smile.amazon.com/Lenormand-Thirty-Six-Cards-Introduction/dp/1500582484

what works best for you will depend on your reading preferences!;)

Blue Owl, Pixie’s Astounding Lenormand, Dondorf and Maybe Lenormand are all good. I like to make sure the art is clear and usually like to have playing card inserts.

All excellent suggestions, thank you so much. I have some research to do! 😍

@katrinka is dead on about not going crazy on “novelty” decks until you internalize the cues. Generally, I like to make sure a scythe is a scythe, not a man harvesting wheat, and a clover is a clover, not a leprechaun holding a clover standing next to a pot of gold.

Same reasons as above for preferring the simpler styles. (Wow, your eye can get lost in a big spread!) And, also, this is not tarot (though I love tarot too!), and the over-done decks sometimes get newer readers reading Lenormand like tarot instead of learning the keywords and the “grammar” particular to these cards. This is especially true if you are an intuitive tarot reader who really picks up on visual cues.

There are are some things visually that really do matter. Some big ones were mentioned already by @katrinka. Personally, I also tend to like my towers tall since they refer to height in some readings. I like my crossroads to actually have an intersection, not one long path. If you want to read directionally, it’s good to have the scythe blade to be facing a distinct direction, the ship to be going left or right (not straight on) and the man and woman to be in profile. I like the clouds to have a light and dark side. These things are not make-or-break right now, but it may save you money to consider how you will grow into your deck as you learn.

And, wow, @reall listed some beautiful decks! I love that chakra one and may have to get it someday. 😄
