chongjasmine Posted September 27, 2017 Posted September 27, 2017 What is your first experience like, reading for others? Me, I remembered I read for my dad and he told me my reading wasn't accurate and it was so discouraging for me. It was my first reading for others and it wasn't accurate. I wanted to give up tarot there and then. But I persevere, and other readings came and they were more accurate. And my confidence grew... by a little. I am still nervous when giving a face to face reading for others. Which is why I tend to do online readings. Enough about me. What about you? What is your first experience like, reading for others?
Lantana Posted September 27, 2017 Posted September 27, 2017 My first experience was in high school. I carried the pocket version of the Waite-Smith with me everywhere, and one of my tablemates in my photography class asked if it was cigarettes. ::) By the end of class I had done readings for both of them! Tarot is pretty good for meeting new people in school/college settings, if you're not too shy/tired to abide people's questions. I don't remember much about that specific reading, but I do remember the many readings I did for them after. I was writing down the interpretations on notebook paper, and I specifically remember that one of the girls almost always had negative readings, which was good practice for being objective. I'm sorry that your first experience was discouraging. Face to face readings can be tough, especially the verbal explanations. Doing it with friends who were understanding helped me.

You are lucky to have friends with understandings. I am also not entirely without luck myself. After my father, I went on to read for my colleagues and that was a positive experience. I am a shy person, guess that is why I am nervous to do face to face tarot reading.
Onaorkal Posted September 27, 2017 Posted September 27, 2017 I started reading for my friends when I had just started with tarot and barely knew anything. So I was carrying a book with me and looking in it for interpretation haha! My friends were usually happy with it, it was just for fun anyway. But eventually I realized that the book I was using wasn't very good so I gave it away and started studying tarot more seriously.
Trogon Posted October 4, 2017 Posted October 4, 2017 Hah! My first reading was probably 24 or 25 years ago and I can't remember a thing about it now (other than it was for a co-worker)! :o I do remember some over the years. I remember the first time I did a reading for a stranger. I had posted in some local bulletin board site (back in the telnet days) and mentioned that I was studying Tarot and one of the people asked if I could do one for her. So we met at a local coffee place. The reading was a Celtic Cross and it was about romance. She, it turned out, had a thing for a person at work, but he was married. The reading warned against going ahead with it (of course), but she did anyway. It didn't turn out well for her. One of the biggest things I remember about it all was the fact that I restrained my urge to say "the cards said it wouldn't turn out well". But I didn't say it. ;D I've done a lot of readings over the years, and a few stick in my head. For the most part the readings I've done have been correct, though in the early days they didn't have much depth. As I've learned to open up and trust my intuition more, I find that I am able to get more depth and nuance in most readings. But sometimes not (I suspect it is usually me having an off-day).
Queen of Nothing Posted October 5, 2017 Posted October 5, 2017 I love my first experience. I went to the observatory for the solar eclipse back in august, and I had set out my brand new deck to charge. There was one girl who I overheard critizing me for wearing a full face of insta-glam makeup. But then she saw me set out decks and crystals. So she asked me what they were all for, so I gave a simplified explanation of tarot. Then her younger siblings asked me for readings, so I did simple 3 card spreads. She probably thought I was going to be stuck-up, but I was really nice to her siblings and her mom asked me a ton of questions. It was pretty nice over all. I like to think i taught that girl not to judge other girls based on superficial things like makeup, and that I helped open up that little family to new beliefs.

That is one of the best "first Tarot reading" experiences I've heard. That sounds like a great experience!
sandrang123 Posted October 5, 2017 Posted October 5, 2017 I started reading playing cards when I was a freshman in high school, where certain cards corresponded to certain people, mostly love interests. Then I made up meanings for the other cards. Lol! But I used to read for my friend, Jean. Sometime that year she bought me my first deck (The Cat People). So I started reading students with that and got called into Fr. Bocian's office for having tarot cards. (Catholic upbringing.) Can't say it deterred me much. ;) Oh, and that year I also got The Sacred Rose deck, which I still have but somewhere, over the years, I lost The Emperor card. I should buy that deck again...Hmmmmmm. Thanks for the trip down memory lane!
EmpyreanKnight Posted October 5, 2017 Posted October 5, 2017 The first time was with my mom. I was not very good back then, and I didn't get feedback whether it came true or not. Years later when I started deeply studying the Thoth, the first person I did a reading for was again my mom. We had a terrific spot of bother then, and she was in low spirits. I only drew one card for her, and it was the Six of Wands - Victory. Less than a year later and after a lot of negotiations and expenses, we eventually won, which shut her rival down for good.
chongjasmine Posted January 5, 2019 Author Posted January 5, 2019 I read for my cousin some times ago and this time, it was spot on!
