RavenOfSummer Posted September 27, 2017 Posted September 27, 2017 Just saw this new deck announcement on Mickie Mueller's Facebook. I guess this is one step to balance all the cat decks out there! The below is all quoted from Mickie's page: Release the hounds! Announcing a new tarot deck "Magical Dogs Tarot" from Llewellyn Worldwide! This is the concept behind the sneak peeks of that new deck that Dan and I partnered on. Watch for this deck featuring a pack of arcane canines coming to book stores September of 2018! “There is a special bond between man and canine that stretches back far into pre-history. When you gaze into the eyes of a dog you awaken echoes of this primordial union. When wolves and man first befriended each other neither was aware of the profound effect this moment would have upon the future of our now intertwined species and the world around us. We gained a skilled hunting partner, a guardian of home and family, and a source of love and laughter. The dogs of the arcane world of this tarot deck connect to ancient mysteries. We will find them dwelling in a realm steeped in the indigenous, natural magic of the earth. They fill many roles; leaders and followers, shamans, healers, and storytellers. It is a primitive world, filled with megaliths, nomad encampments, small tribal villages, ceremonial fetishes of hide, feather and bone, and pictographs harkening back to the dawn of time. Within in the deck you will learn their story, and indeed, the story of us all. Whether an ancient large breed built for the hunt, or the primped and pampered show dog, all of these canines trace their spiritual ancestry back to the union of the primeval magic of the wild wolf and the beliefs of early man.” –Daniel Mueller Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
EmpyreanKnight Posted September 27, 2017 Posted September 27, 2017 I'm very much a dog person and so is my family, like between our two houses we have 10 dogs (along with 4 cats, 2 fish, and 4 ducks too). If the art is just like this, this deck goes straight into my To-Buy list. Thanks for posting this, RavenOfSummer.
Onaorkal Posted September 27, 2017 Posted September 27, 2017 OHHHHH :o :o :o Mickie Mueller is the illustrator of the Mystical Cats Tarot, this deck totally feels like the perfect counterpart for it. (Well I can only hope so, since I can only see one image for now haha!) ;D September 2018 is so far! I hope we'll have some other sneak peaks during the course of the year!
Queen of Nothing Posted September 28, 2017 Posted September 28, 2017 I'm so excited! I'm very much a dog person, and there aren't nearly enough dog-themed decks and I'm so excited to see how this one comes out. I just... I love doggos so much...
Little Fang Posted September 28, 2017 Posted September 28, 2017 I'm not too much of a dog person but I do like them (I miss my dog...) and want this in my collection for sure! I hope there is a blue heeler in it!
katrinka Posted September 30, 2017 Posted September 30, 2017 I normally don't go in for mystical/pagan animal decks, but OMG DOGS!!!!! And yes - all there's been up to now AFAIK is Il Meneghello's I Cani Majors only deck, and that "Dog Tarot" that seems unfinished, like the creator abandoned the project but had it printed up anyway. This is going to be the very first complete 78 card dog Tarot, I think.
gregory Posted September 30, 2017 Posted September 30, 2017 I hate dogs. But I do like her work. Hm....
katrinka Posted September 30, 2017 Posted September 30, 2017 We're conflicted, gregory, just in different ways, lol. You don't like dogs, I don't like pagan animal decks. But I'll get this one. ;D
EmpyreanKnight Posted October 1, 2017 Posted October 1, 2017 It seems that the only canine Tarot deck in existence is . . . The Medieval Chihuahua Tarot. And it seems to still be available for purchase. Hmmmm. I will definitely buy the Magical Dogs once it comes out. 12 months to go!
CherryNukaCola Posted October 4, 2017 Posted October 4, 2017 Oh Lovely. As I love dogs as much as I love cats, I'm always so sad my collection doesn't reflect that.
EmpyreanKnight Posted October 4, 2017 Posted October 4, 2017 Oh Lovely. As I love dogs as much as I love cats, I'm always so sad my collection doesn't reflect that. I think that's just to be expected, CherryNukaCola, since it seems that prior to this we only had one canine Tarot deck (which is a novelty one, at that) and around a dozen and a half feline ones. That makes this one very special tho, and I think it'd be a hit. But hmmm. If Tarot decks are marketed to readers, can it be that Tarot practitioners are mostly cat persons?
Little Fang Posted October 4, 2017 Posted October 4, 2017 Cats are considered more magical and mystical in general. The look in their eyes, the way they slink from room to room unnoticed, how they stare into space and chase around imaginary things or ghosts. They're traditionally tied to witches and those who use magick and divination. And this is why they are the subject of so many decks. 8) I've never considered a dog to be a mystical animal, but that is not to say that this deck can't change our perceptions of them in this role. They are protectors and guides, and canines fall under Anubis and Wepwawet's watch. I have high hopes for this deck! (It's funny, I had plans to make a dog tarot before this one was announced but got nowhere. :-[)
Quester Posted October 4, 2017 Posted October 4, 2017 I love dogs so naturally I am excited about this deck!!!
Trogon Posted October 5, 2017 Posted October 5, 2017 I love dogs! Can't really imagine life without at least one in the house. I will be anxiously waiting for this one to come out! I'm going to have to get two though ... my best friend/neighbor is also our veterinarian - he is definitely a dog person.
katrinka Posted October 5, 2017 Posted October 5, 2017 But hmmm. If Tarot decks are marketed to readers, can it be that Tarot practitioners are mostly cat persons? The Baroque Bohemian Cats exists because Karen and Alex are cat people, lol. If they were dog people, they'd have done a dog deck. I suspect deck creators are mostly cat people. ;D (Though Karen is also a knowledgeable practitioner.) I've never considered a dog to be a mystical animal... I'll just leave these here. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dogs_in_religion https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Category:Mythological_dogs Some weirdness - http://mentalfloss.com/article/91855/st-guinefort-dog-venerated-saint Guinefort was never recognized as a saint by the church. But St. Christopher was depicted with a dog head. And there are the Corgi fairy legends, uncountable stories of psychic dogs...and Immunity Dog on twitter, lol: https://twitter.com/ImmunityDog

(It's funny, I had plans to make a dog tarot before this one was announced but got nowhere. :-[) I guess it all depends on the person. I used to have an absolute beast of a dog, all muscle and raw strength. I never felt safer than I did when I would chill with her. I knew she would protect me from anything, physically or otherwise. And she did protect me from a spirits many times before.
EmpyreanKnight Posted October 6, 2017 Posted October 6, 2017 I'm not much of a cat person, tho I love our current cat because she's so much more affectionate and friendly and have a sunnier disposition than our previous cats tho she still hates my hugs lol. But if I really like the Magical Dogs, I'd also get the Mystical Cats, since they seem like such a fitting pair. :) If I really dislike it (which would be farfetched since I have seen some images when I got curious about Onaorkal's study group) I would just give it to my sister who is currently studying to be a vet, and who happens to love cats

I never felt safer than I did when I would chill with her. I knew she would protect me from anything, physically or otherwise. And she did protect me from a spirits many times before. My Bandit was like that, and he wasn't even a big dog - just medium sized, a little short of 50 pounds. A Chow mix. That dog had the heart of a lion. I could walk him in the worst neighborhoods at night and nobody dared come close. He let them know not to if they tried. He caught a guy who broke in once, bit him good and woke us all up. He'd get up during the night and check all the rooms, sniff at the cracks under the doors. I feared nothing when I had that dog. He'd have thrown his life away for me with no hesitation. It didn't come to that - the cancer took him at age 13. I still keep his ashes. Cats are fun, but there's just no contest AFAIC.
Little Fang Posted October 6, 2017 Posted October 6, 2017 Now now, there will be no cats vs dogs arguments brewing on my forum! 8) They both have their merits! (Discussion is nice in the context of the deck and magicalness, it's just one of those things people have BIG opinions on and I'm just preparing the fire extinguisher!) But yes, dogs do a big service to humanity and we are lucky to have them. I was watching the news today and they were showing the dogs that visit sick people in the hospital. Also some airports have stress relieving dogs for those who are anxious to fly! I had a blue heeler who lost the use of her back legs for unknown reasons (we suspect it was a stroke..) and we had to put her down. It hurts SO MUCH. She lost the will to eat or do anything...
katrinka Posted October 6, 2017 Posted October 6, 2017 Cats can be unexpectedly heroic. I saw a guy buying a steak for his cat once. He said that he was about to step on a copperhead and he didn't see it, but his old tomcat did. Kitty jumped down from the porch railing and killed it in the nick of time. I'm a double Dog according to my Chinese horoscope (year and hour), and a total dog nerd. If I have a power animal, it's surely some kind of canid. But all of my best friends over the years have been cat people. Go figure. There won't be any arguments from this quarter. ;)

I'm dying to see what they bring forth to the lore of the magical dogs. I know the cat lore was beautiful. (It reminded me of the Warriors books!)

Woops. Didnt mean to give off that vibe. :-[ I was just trying to say that people who have strong connections to dogs can see them as mystical animals, even if there isn't a ton of lore. Everyone already knows the Cat is a witch's familiar. But people who have had That One Dog, the one you know was ride or die, know that dogs are just as willing as any cat to throw down with those spoopy spirits And now we get a deck that shows how cool and witchy doggos can be. ;D ;D
Little Fang Posted October 6, 2017 Posted October 6, 2017 No you're fine Queen of Nothing! I just was taking some precautions so we don't start a "cats/dogs are better blabla!" war because it's something that people are mega opinionated about. There is a new card on display on her instragram!
katrinka Posted October 6, 2017 Posted October 6, 2017 I was just trying to say that people who have strong connections to dogs can see them as mystical animals, even if there isn't a ton of lore. Everyone already knows the Cat is a witch's familiar. But there is a ton of lore - I posted some links upthread. And historically, a familiar can be any animal. Cats, dogs, rabbits, ferrets... People tend to think of cats because of the Halloween tropes. You know, the old witch (or the hot young witch) stirring a cauldron or riding a broomstick with a black cat nearby. Usually arching his back and puffing his tail, lol. Hallmark witches, lol.
