SacredPath Posted January 27, 2020 Posted January 27, 2020 I find that the readings you do for yourself resonate the most when something "big" has happened. Like if you've just had a breakup or an argument that happened you can gain insights. They don't work as well in my experience for other things. I still go to readers 3 or 4 times a year when something big is happening and I don't want to worry about a filter that I'm applying to my own reading.
Adriana Posted January 30, 2020 Posted January 30, 2020 I read for myself all the time and it can work as long as I’m not too emotional. Which is easier said than done sometimes. If I’m too afraid, hopeful, scared of seeing the truth then the cards tend to go very black and white. Like giving me all the swords and negative cards. Or all happy dreamy cuppy cards. In those cases I know the cards reflects on my own state of mind. Just like when you get nightmares out of dimensions when dealing with something difficult in waking life. At its most positive, reading for yourself can be like a dialogue with the cards. But that requires you to be open and not scared of the truth
Jungian Posted February 1, 2020 Posted February 1, 2020 I have tried a couple of times and I got to the following conclusion: a) sometimes it works. b) sometimes the results I get are exactly the opposite of what will happen or c) the spread makes no sense at all. F.e, I have a celtic cross reading and I get the Sun in the future position and the 10 of Swords in the outcome. By all means this is impossible to interpret. So I am not sure if self-reading works or if I am actually doing something wrong. But that's just me
Sunny Posted February 3, 2020 Posted February 3, 2020 I can do it in some aspects but not in love. My cards always look positive in love for me, like telling me "I' ll tell you what you want to hear, so stop asking" lol. Cards, I am just a loner :v
Jungian Posted February 11, 2020 Posted February 11, 2020 Totally agree with @Sunny I just realised that most of the times when I do readings for myself, the cards don't show me what it could actually happen but what I would like to happen. For example, I had a weekly reading and the day I had a job interview I had the 4 of wands. The outcome of the interview was a blatant failure. The whole week was showing me what I would like to happen. I think it is hard to achieve synchronicity when we do readings for ourselves. Somehow our emotions, hope and fears affect the overall spread and the results we see are the ones we crave to see.

So there would be a Sun event coming in the near future, but the whole matter would end in a 10 of Swords way. https://www.sacred-texts.com/tarot/pkt/pkt0307.htm

I have gotten some profoundly helpful readings on myself, when I am too attached to the outcome and worried over the result? I see gloom and doom all throughout the reading.
Papageno Posted February 15, 2020 Posted February 15, 2020 I've found that reading for yourself is a whole learning curve unto itself. Over the course of years I've come to accept that: 1. the majors and suits are what they are, there no "good" or "bad" cards or suits. 2. read the cards in any given spread in a very well rounded manner, both as "upright" and "reversed". 3. reading for "yourself" reveal broader implications that reach beyond the "self". 4. the simpler the spread the better, but's just a matter of personal taste/technique. 5. not good to read when your head is in a turmoil. It's best if your mind is clear and you can just say, alright, just show me what you will. 6. asking very specific questions to pinpoint an issue very often reveals much more in hindsight, details at 11:00 sort of thing. 7 the "hindsight" thing is what I think muddies the waters for many people, so just take in what you can at that moment and then come back to it (much) later. of course all of this is just a reflection of my own personal experiences and preferences.
GreatDane Posted October 8, 2023 Posted October 8, 2023 That's WHY and HOW I started reading tarot! It began as just MY journey with cards. I only read tarot for myself and a few select friends, I read Lenormand for everyone else.
November Posted October 8, 2023 Posted October 8, 2023 Of course you can, but you must be very skilled at not seeing what you want to see in your cards, I mean you must be neutral in your interpretation.
katelunee Posted October 25, 2023 Posted October 25, 2023 You can but I feel like there is always a sort of bias or we might interpret the good things only. At least for that’s sometimes the problem so I do like to get my readings done by someone else or have someone else who I know can read tarot give me a second opinion
