xTheHermitx Posted December 11, 2019 Posted December 11, 2019 So...I have completely misplaced my original RWS deck that I got 30 something years ago. It happened about a year ago in a move. It is frustrating in that I swear it was with my other decks, but it is not...and i KNOW it is not in my old place b/c I have been there twice since I moved to give paper work to the new owner. I really want to use it. Is it weird that I feel "guilty" about buying a new one....or I am more wondering should I buy a new one, or will that "mess up the vibes" I have wiht the old one. I KNOW what's going to happen is I will buy a new one, and the old one will suddenly appear again... on the other hand, if the old one does reappear, I know I can gift the new one to my niece, who is starting to study runes, and other occult basics with me now. She is 12. Is it weird thatI am this torn about it?
Grandma Posted December 11, 2019 Posted December 11, 2019 I don't think it's weird. You love that deck and you miss it. But the deck is 78 pieces of cardboard. The vibes are with the concept, not the object. You can buy a new deck and give it to your niece if the old one reappears or you can continue to torture yourself. Personally, I think a year is more than long enough. Love, Grandma

Love, Grandma that is what my sister says, but there is some part of me that still feels like the cardboard has soaked in some energy as well...I am very ritualistic with material items (my wife calls it hoarding 😉 ) never thought about the torturing my self part...
DanielJUK Posted December 12, 2019 Posted December 12, 2019 you should do what you feel comfortable with! Why not buy a different deck or a RWS clone which is slightly different to the one you have lost? Then you won't feel bad or buy a completely different deck? 🙂 for example the Lo Scarabeo RWS Pamela Colman Smith clone of RWS has such gorgeous colouring and different to the standard, there are many other slightly different RWS clones out there!

I'd say it's some kind of OK weird. which is cool. But yeah, there's a void now. I'd suggest getting a RWS of the same vintage or even a little older. It will cost more, but new cards just don't FEEL like vintage cards, and you're used to using a vintage copy. It won't be the deck you lost, but it's a pretty good approximation. There you can also put in an ISO (In Search Of) and then people can go through their collections to see if they have what you want 🙂
katrinka Posted December 12, 2019 Posted December 12, 2019 Yes. And Etsy has old decks, too, and you might get a better price there than you would ebay. And not all ebayers are on the level, of course, so if you haven't had your box and/or deck for some time, you might want to re-familiarize yourself with the differences between a newer deck and an old one.

This. I love vintage RWS decks. If you can find one at an affordable price go for one of the 1970s decks with no copyright. The cardstock is amazing and the colours are striking. In the UK we call these the Blue Box RWS. Purple box RWS are 1980s - early 90s and have copyright but the cardstock does feel more substantial.
