Can you use the cards and interpret them yourself?

The title says it all. While browsing through the net, I stumbled upon some sites that said "why you should not read the cards by yourself" and stuff like that. Why would they say that? If it's true, what's the negative implication? If it's not true, do I need like a special preparation or guide to read them myself, or...?

This topic comes up a lot here and now that I’ve moved your post to the right category then you’ll be able to look around and see what’s been said previously 🙂. Here is one thread you may appreciate

But the main reason why some people don’t read for themselves is that they don’t think they will be able to be objective or to detach themselves properly so they won’t affect the cards or the interpretations. It is my belief though that the majority of readers does read for themselves, to some extent.

I think reading for yourself is very good when learning. Because if you do it properly, then it should give you the discipline also to read for others. And by that I mean, you do need to accept exactly what it is the cards are showing you no matter how difficult that truth may be, in what they show for the question, in the spread. But, reading for others, if its just for practice and even, or especially fun is probably the best way to learn and perfect communication skills to relay the message to the sitter. And most importantly, learning the essence of the cards individually and how they integrate in a spread.

Thank you, have a nice day.

I sometimes tend to depress myself by reading the cards too negatively in fear of glossing over the icky stuff. I still do read quite a bit for myself though.

I'm a little over three years of reading and studying tarot, and I read only for myself for a majority of that time, due to feelings of inexperience and fear of my own abilities not being enough. I also live in a very, very conservative, traditional Christian area where finding others to read for in person is not easy at all, and my contacts have always been pretty limited.

I think it comes down to circumstances and personal comfort. I think that also applies to buying tarot decks for yourself; a lot of hard and fast rules you read online that might not apply to someone in a different situation. I don't think reading for yourself is bad at all.

Even now that I've done a good many readings for others online, I still read for myself, but I definitely KNOW what topics I have a harder time with when it comes to reading for myself.

I'd say, just read for yourself now to really grow a relationship with the cards imagery and meanings. I felt, at least for me, the best way to understand a card fully was to pull it five, six, seven times while reading for yourself and having its features stick with you.

There are many readers who begin their Tarot journey by reading for themselves only until they are confident and feel ready to read for others. It helps them to not only form a relationship with their deck, but also practice on their own in a relaxed and non-objective manner.

They probably want you to purchase a reading from them. And if they have to make flim-flam statements like that in order to sell readings, you can rest assured that the readings are flim-flam.
Everybody who reads cards reads for themselves. Not just while they're learning, either. If you're considering a major change of some kind, or you just want to know how something is going to play out, of course you're going to pull cards on it.

I only read for myself, I don't anticipate reading for others will be a part of my practice. If you're viewing Tarot as an introspective tool and something you use to access your higher consciousness, there is nothing that could be negative about reading for yourself. Reading for yourself will open your eyes and help you understand yourself better.

As long as you are honest with yourself, I see that there would be no harm in reading for yourself.

The danger would lie in any potential self-delusion. Insisting on reading a spread to match an already pre-determined by you outcome. Detaching from ego and using accumulated personal insight would be the key.

And also being ready to admit that you may have read something wrong, later on. But I guess that comes back around to ego as well.

This!  I do not have intentions of ever reading for others - only to help develop my intuition and spiritual journey.  I would be pretty sad if I learned that I wasn't supposed to read for myself.

I think this idea goes in the superstition basket right along with the idea that you can't buy your own deck of cards. Where it originated from, who knows? But it's about as far from the truth that I've experienced as it gets.

Reading for myself has done SO. Much. for my practice, my life, my understanding of self and others and the world around me. God, if I couldn't do that...? I'd be a very sad puppy. I've learned my cards, developed a relationship with them, found hope in dark times, gotten encouragement to keep going down fruitful paths, and---more than once--gotten a reading that just makes me lmao. My cards can be pretty cheeky!

At the end of the day, though, I think what matters most is how YOU feel about it. Check in with your gut: are you seeing clearly when you read for yourself? Does it feel wrong or out of alignment, and if so why? Because, even in that case, it may not be so much about THAT you're reading for yourself but HOW you're reading for yourself.

Also, be wary of ANYONE who tries to give you "rules" for your practice. It's YOUR practice.
