EmpyreanKnight Posted October 12, 2017 Posted October 12, 2017 Just curious, have you ever encountered a deck that somehow filled you with intense foreboding (and not just because of the price)? Decks which you have physically seen or beheld and which you noped away from, simply because it's giving off bad vibes? Well I personally haven't, but I've heard some stories.
Siavahda Posted October 12, 2017 Posted October 12, 2017 My husband's majors-only H.R. Giger Baphomet Tarot. I have to leave the room whenever he does a reading. To a lesser extent, every deck I've seen by Lucy Cavindish, and the Deviant Moon tarot. There's plenty of decks whose artistic style I just don't click with, but something about those makes my stomach roil.
greycats Posted October 13, 2017 Posted October 13, 2017 Any deck that in any way reminds me of the Texas Chainsaw Massacre.
Trogon Posted October 13, 2017 Posted October 13, 2017 I personally have not had this issue wither either a specific individual deck, or with a deck because of it's art. At least not yet. I have a good friend who is kind of creeped out by the Deviant Moon Tarot, but that's the imagery, not necessarily any specific "vibe" that he gets from my specific copy. I do have several decks which I bought used, but none have given me issues like this. Any residual energies seem to have been taken care of by reordering the cards and basically taking them on as my own.

I've never seen the deck in person, but the imagery is just...UGH. Creepy in a bad, skin-crawl-y kind of way, really turns me off. But again, that's just the art. I guess I'm lucky in that I've never come across a deck that I felt had a bad energy. Just like you Trogon, I've bought decks used and have never had any issues with them.

Nanook Posted October 27, 2017 Posted October 27, 2017 I am with Raven of Summer - Deviant Moon gives me weird vibe. When I got the Silver Witchcraft tarot, which I had been so eager to get, I took one look and said Nope Nope Nope. Didn’t open it, returned it immediately. It seriously creeped me out. I thought I would love Poppy Palin’s Wild Spirit, but when I got it i didn’t even want it in my house. Sold it on AT quickly and was glad to give it an appreciative home.

Like you, I haven't meet such a deck.
Mab Posted November 12, 2017 Posted November 12, 2017 I was in a pagan guest house in the summer, where there was a selection of tarot and oracle decks lying about. There was one which, whilst it didn't exactly fill me with foreboding, made me feel “ no, this one definitely isn't for me.” and I didn't want to handle it. I can't remember what it was, though I have seen a similar one on eBay in the past few months. Vintage, smaller than average, with a plain red cover. Although it was the specific deck, rather than the art work, that gave this impression. There are a few decks where the art work turns me off, like the Deviant Moon and the Rohrig and that Infinity deck, good heavens....but so far nothing bad.
Flaxen Posted November 12, 2017 Posted November 12, 2017 It's funny how perceptions can be so different - Deviant Moon is one of my favourite reading decks - I just see them as quirky creatures in their own little universe. The only deck I have that I'm cautious about using is The New Orleans Voodoo tarot. Not because it creeps me out but more that the spirits depicted have a vibrant, living religion attached to them.

I don't know much about the new Santa Muerte Tarot, but I've heard people say similar things about that one- that Santa Muerte can be a difficult and even dangerous personality to work with, and I saw a couple of people who come from that cultural background say they were really surprised to see people seem to jump into working with that deck without any knowledge of her. I agree with you Flaxen, I think it's wise to approach such things with caution and respect or not at all. Although on the other hand, if, say, voodoo is something you're interested in learning about, maybe working with the deck could be a good way to do it.
Saturn Celeste Posted November 12, 2017 Posted November 12, 2017 My husband's majors-only H.R. Giger Baphomet Tarot. I have to leave the room whenever he does a reading. I have the Ginger deck also and I can’t read with it anymore, I keep it in my cupboard away from my other cards. I get really bad vibes from the deck. I love my Deviant Moon deck and use it a lot. I have Tarot of the Dead and the Santa Muerte deck and love using both of them.
EmpyreanKnight Posted November 13, 2017 Author Posted November 13, 2017 I have the Deviant Moon and the Santa Muerte would be in my hands before the month ends. Methinks I'd jive with both of them, or I'd just have to use my charm. ;D The Enochian tho - I've heard stories about that one. Some readers also feel utterly repelled by the Thoth. I don't know if it's specific copies of both that repulse these people or if it's the art or what.
katrinka Posted November 13, 2017 Posted November 13, 2017 I don't have the Deviant Moon, but I do have the Trionfi Della Luna Majors only deck, and I've been meaning to get the full deck. (Need to hurry and do that before it sells out.) It doesn't seem malign, just hilariously demented. That's not something appropriate to every reading, so I don't use it all the time. Valenza strikes me as someone who came of age in the 90's when everything was over-the-top dark and gothy. He's fun. The Giger is great art, but ugh, wetware. I passed on that one. I wouldn't use the Santa Muerte. A lot of people I know venerate her. She seems to be very effective. :D I don't know how she would take to some guy in Italy using her image for profit. In any case, it's not something I would want in my house. The deck just seems disrespectful. The Thoth is a beautiful deck. Nothing malign about it. I think anyone who is freaked out by it is just freaked out by Crowley, for whatever reason. There's nothing in the art to repel anyone. I've noped away from many, many decks, but not out of any sense of forboding. I just didn't like them.
EmpyreanKnight Posted November 13, 2017 Author Posted November 13, 2017 Same here, katrinka. When push comes to shove, the Thoth has always been my personal go-to deck. I love its art so much that I have it in all three available sizes, and I have lots of Thoth books too since its the very first Tarot deck I tried to study. There's something very mystical and timeless about the images, and I really can't find anything sinister about it as some do. So yeah maybe it's Crowley's rep. He did call himself the Great Beast 666, tho I remember that he denied that he was a Satanist.

"The wickedest man in the world" who performed child sacrifice "about 150 times per year from 1912-1928". The best magical writings have things built in to scare the idiots away. ROFL. ;D
