Hey dude!!

One thing that really helped me when I was learning the Runes was to just look for them to appear in every day life situations, and then to ponder on why they showed up. Sort of like the opposite of looking for predictions.  For me, that was my "test" to see if I really understood their meaning. This was also along with, and after much studying, reading, practicing with the etc. I would be sitting at a traffic light, and all the sudden see a rune shape in tree branches, or the lines of buildings. Or something  happens and I'll go "man, that was soooo Wunjo, or Eiwhaz..." something where a quick series of events would remind me of a runes meaning.

I have been trying to do this now with Tarot. It is harder b/c the symbolism is more involved, but it is still there. Since I am more familiar with the Major Arcana, I mostly stick to that, but I also am finding myself applying some of the big picture concepts of the Minos now as well. I constantly challenge my self to interpret situations with "what Tarot card would represent what just happened?"

I also think diving into the history of whatever deck/symbolism system you are learning helps. History is my other love behind music, so I always research the past on things I am studying.

My day-to-day tarot work looks a bit different depending on what's going on in my life. I haven't had a great track record with vague one-card draws about the day, I tend to do better with something a bit more specific, even if it's just a card for "advice for today."

Recently I've been juggling a few different projects and struggling to choose which to prioritize, and often it makes my brain a hectic, scattered place. So recently the most helpful daily draws have been about focus. I've liked a two-card draw: 1. What I should focus on/prioritize today (sometimes split into priority #1 and priority #2 if there are really too many things happening at once) and 2. What I shouldn't worry about/get distracted by/spend time on today. #1 has been great for my motivation - I stop flitting between several things while accomplishing little, and start getting deep into one specific thing. #2 sometimes reminds me to stop wasting time moping about lost opportunities, or worrying about the far future, which takes time and energy away from things I need to do in the present. Or sometimes it tells me: back away from that darn social media already! 😂

OMG  I should let the Tarot schedule my life for me hahahaha I never know how best to spend my time so I should just ask the Tarot "how can I spend my time wisely today?"  And I can't believe I haven't thought of just asking for daily advice haha I will do this for sure!  Thanks @jdusk!

Yeess I still need to order that book Gregory recommended me, I thought I was getting paid last friday but I'm not on this pay period yet even though they paid me for my training, thought that was kinda weird.  I'd love to say more but I'm seriously exhausted today I may just go straight to bed.   Thanks for the wonderful advice though Hermit.

I do think taking a daily card for myself really formed my basis of understanding the cards. You don't have to do it predictive, you can take a card at the end of the day or the next day for the previous day to review it. I have read a lot of different author's interpretations but applying a card to my day really helped me work out my own view of each card and has been so beneficial later in my readings. By doing a daily card (both to see what happened or to review what happened) you are relating it to something that you can quantify in real life. However I know it's not for everyone but just using them in anyway that suits you makes you improve! 🙂

Just to echo this sentiment and others: My most common engagement with tarot right now is through the card-a-day format. I just don't have lots of pressing issues that I feel like conducting entire readings on. I do a non-predictive draw each night and think about how the card manifested during the day, recording my thoughts in a journal. Often the connection is immediately clear and fairly mundane. Sometimes it's puzzling. Occasionally it's surprising and shifts my perspective on the day's events--that's the best. But I find that the simple habit of drawing the cards gives me a good feeling of being involved in the art, and that's the greatest value of the approach.

Of course, this approach is very much predicated on my theory of how tarot works, which really has little to do with prediction, but that's material for a different post.

I do a number of things on a regular basis to work with the cards, most of them driven by the fact that I try to post something new on my blog every day. I'm with Daniel on doing political readings (the PoMo Tarot is great for them) and sporting event readings (but only when championships are going on). I don't do movie-and-book-plot readings, but I do quite a bit of real-life whodunit stuff with missing-person cases that appear in the local media (not for clients - although friends and family of the people sometimes contact me through my blog site - just for my own study). I usually create a couple of new spreads every week when I run out of blogging material, and doing test readings with them is good for a comparable number of posts. I do "new deck interviews" on the rare occasion that  I buy one, and sometimes drag out two similar decks and do "face-off" readings with them (mainly just to amuse myself). Except for a GT every six months, I seldom read for myself unless something important comes up, and I haven't done a routine daily draw in decades, ever since I stopped journaling. It all amounts to practice, which I can never get enough of.

LOL, they generally fit the location they're in, at least somewhat. A potholder hanging by a corner looks like Ing, a tree trunk or utility pole can look like Algiz. But broken things look like the more dire ones. You'll spot several here:

Yes, cards are a language. One has to learn to think in it.

Nice!! Yeah I would like to try the news readings etc, so far though I've gotten very into pathworking, I talked about this in my journal recently, it's just memorizing a card's pic, then closing your eyes and stepping into the card so to speak.  But it has changed my whole relationship with the Tarot really, somehow I just couldn't feel the cards or sense them, now they are like movie scenes I'm very familiar with.  I've also started creating stories with my decks, and doing meditations with them via the advice of a book called "Tarot of the Spirit" i'm reading (which I would highly recommend!)  But yeah thank you for the feedback!

Following this thread because I'm in the process of reconnecting with my Tarot of The Hidden Rhealm deck. So far I've done an interview spread, I've laid out the MA cards in order, cleansed them and tried out a couple of spreads. I've used this deck before so it's like meeting an old friend. I have to try and remember and work out the type of spreads this deck suits. All a learning process. ☺

Awesome!  I'd say I'm at a place where my Starman deck is becoming like a friend I just need to get to know some of the cards I don't "vibe with" a little better.  I told my mentor I was ready to join the exchanges but I'm not gonna join in until he gives the ok, I really trust the guy 🙂

I'm wondering what "face off" readings are. They sound fun. ☺

Here is a link to the spread I created. It uses the numerical midpoint between cards on the 1-to-78 scale to find their point of maximum convergence or conflict, depending on what card sits there. The spread will probably go to your downloads file when you try to open it. I've also added a link to an example reading.

Thanks @Barleywine for those links. Would this work for any deck? Ie a mix of RWS decks/clones? ☺

I don't see why not. I just use it with decks I know I'm going to do two-deck readings with, and haven't thought beyond that. It seems to work quite well with standard decks and their clones, for example, the Thoth and the Liber T: Tarot of Stars Eternal.
