Because of my age, I am magnetically drawn to this 1972 treatment of the classic RWS deck. The brown, rust, gold, and turquoise; the thick, clean lines; the color-bubbled calligraphic text all speak to my soul. Does this vintage pop-art depiction inflect the meanings of the cards? Only by reminding viewers of 1970s values: community, anti-materialism, DIY, environmentalism, healthful living, acceptance of individuals outside the norm, and joyful celebration of everyday blessings. The image of a key on the back of each card can also be a meditation on the question: What is the key to this situation?

Artist Kris Waldherr Lover’s Path deck takes a unique approach. The major arcana is peopled with famous lovers from Western history, from Odysseus and Penelope to Romeo and Juliet. Each minor arcana suit is focused on the story of a different couple. For example, all the coins reflect the story of Danae and Zeus. Studying this deck side by side with these stories can enrich understanding of the cards.

As with Waldherr’s other deck, the Goddess Tarot, many of the majors are renamed. Some of the most interesting renamings are Innocence (the Fool), Desire (the Chariot), Grace (the Star), and Awakening (Judgement). I found it valuable to meditate on how these new names deepen card meanings. For example: What role does “desire” play in where my chariot goes? In what ways do I need to “awaken” in order to activate better judgement in a situation? Ultimately, however, I feel the renamings can be limiting. For example, there is far more to the Chariot than just motivation or desire.

In the Goddess Tarot, artist Kris Waldherr beautifully illustrates the major arcana with goddesses from cultures around the word. Many of the majors are renamed, probably in an attempt to make them more relevant for a modern audience. The renamed majors are 0 Beginnings, 1 Magic, 2 Wisdom, 3 Fertility, 4 Power, 5 Tradition, 6 Love, 7 Movement, 9 Contemplation, 10 Fortune, 12 Sacrifice, 13 Transformation, 14 Balance, 15 Temptation, and 16 Oppression. I find the new names valuable for meditating on card meanings. However, they can be more limiting than the traditional names and can be confusing to clients. The minor arcana does not reflect a wide departure from traditional decks, but it is illustrated with some ethnic diversity: swords are Egyptian, and pentacles are East Indian.

If you ever wondered what’s happening outside the frame of a card, this is the deck for you. Tarot of the New Vision shows a rear view of the images from Rider-Waite-Smith. This technique enables the artists to reveal, for example, what acolytes are doing behind the Hierophant’s back (handling a snake) and what Strength sees in the distance (a stone giant). In many cases, this shift of perspective allows us to take the character’s view, showing for example the angry mob the 7 of Wands is facing or what the 2 of Swords sees – a horse walking up the beach, ready to take her away once she decides to take action. This fanciful behind-the-scenes glimpse into each card allows for a new layer of interpretation. The subtitles in Italian, Spanish, French, and German are also helpful for further study

A quintessential reflection of second-wave feminism and eclectic Goddess-centered spirituality, this is an important deck in the history of Tarot. This is the first widely-distributed deck of round cards, and Karen Vogel (one of the deck’s artists) published the Motherpeace Tarot Guidebook which gives inflected interpretations on the card positions: upright, left, right, and reversed.

This deck is also the first widely-distributed feminist, multi-cultural Tarot deck – breaking free from traditional Rider-Waite-Smith card depictions and interpretations. That being the case, some cards are shown in a more negative light, some in a more positive: The Hierophant wears fake breasts, imitating priestess-power, while Judgement is a rainbow woman cloaking the earth in light. Most importantly, Motherpeace brought an entirely new perspective to court cards, changing the names and gender-associations and exerting a strong influence on later decks. The book Motherpeace: A Way to the Goddess Through Myth, Art, and Tarot by Vicki Noble (the second artist of the deck) describes the deck’s history and underpinnings and provides insights into working with and interpreting the cards.

One criticism of this deck is that the artwork isn’t very sophisticated and is too reflective of its era, for example, women doing aerobics in 80s workout gear on the Sun card. Another criticism is that while some cards reflect African and Native American cultures, the images lack insight from people who live in those cultures, as was common in second-wave feminism.
