My name is Tjesi. I started learning the tarot about 3 years ago. Last year I was part of a monthly reading exchange with a specific set of divination questions for each month. This year I have started reading for others on a very, very limited basis. In other words I am really new to this. I have 5 decks that I currently use. I need to have an emotional response to a deck before I want to use it. That is generally based on the art, but not always. I have a horrible time shuffling decks. I have short fingers and have tried a number of ways, but the best so far is just to put the cards on a table face down and mix them around. I don't really like it and will keep looking for other ways to shuffle.

Looking forward to reading what others have to say and to finding my way.

Hi Tjesi! I am also new here but have been practicing off and on for 20 years. I am still learning and look forward to interacting with you.

Hello and welcome!

When I am dealing with a deck I have a hard time shuffling, while sometimes I just smoosh 'em around like you said, I have another way as well. I essentially deal out the cards into as many piles as I can fit in the space "randomly" and then once I've put down all the cards I pick up one pile and start re-distributing them into the other piles, and sometimes into new piles, whatever feels right. Eventually the piles become fewer and fewer until there's only two, at which point I just kind of cut the deck a few times and then put them together into one. If I think I need to, I do it all again.

That feels like quite a paragraph for something pretty simple 😅

Welcome  @Tjesi

I share your pain with card shuffling.  I do a gentle side shuffle holding them horizontally in my left hand and then grabbing from the back and cascading to the front.  I have to shuffle longer that way but it puts less wear & tear on both the cards and my hands.

Welcome to you @Tjesi.  And I find @LogicalHue's shuffling method very helpful for when I play card games with my friends! See you around.

@Wyrdkiss I came up with it for shuffling tiles in board games, I just do it a little less methodically and more "go with how it feels" for tarot.

Hi Tjesi! I'm brand new, too. I choose decks the same way, based on the art. There definitely needs to be an immediate emotional response. What decks are you attracted to? I love the Ostara Tarot because it was made by a team of four professional female artists in Vancouver, and I love the story behind it and the gentle color palette and illustration style.

Glad you made it, friend! ❤

@LogicalHue Thanks! That's a great idea for shuffling! I'll give it a try!

@Jacqueline Current decks (I only have 5 one of which I got in an auction and haven't really used yet).

  • Clive Barrett's Ancient Egyptian Tarot... it's a problematic deck, but I love the inclusion of the gods. This was my first deck.
  • Shadowscape Tarot by Stephanie Pui-Mun Law. Love the art. It's a little delicate usually, but I had the most powerful reading I've ever had done with that, so I got it and I love it.
  • Prisma Visions
  • The Wild Unknown

The last two are the ones I used the most. I like the art, the colors, and the strength of the images. Not sure I'll get more. I'm rather happy with these. I think if I get more it will only keep me from learning.

@TheLoracular I tried that, but can't seem to get the hang of it.
