I never look at my profile so it won't bother me 🙂  Trying averting your eyes

UM. Other people look. This is going to be problematic:

I really don't like the idea that none of us are even listed as "proficient" until we've made thousands of posts. A lot of us were proficient long before we came here.
Those of us who are used to forums know titles like that are hooey, but what if you do paid readings and a potential client who doesn't know that sees "Rookie" or "Apprentice" on your profile? "Mentor" could cause a lot of unwanted confusion too. Not everyone who is up to X number of posts will have the time or inclination to take on a protege.

And people WILL assume it's about card reading expertise rather than post count. I had to explain that a couple of times at Kaph's old forum. IIRC he finally changed them or got rid of them, but that was BB software. I hope it's possible here.

Now @katrinka is an "Apprentice"?! bah! Never have been a fan of ranks, either. I hope they can be changed.

I am a lurker. I rarely post. I am not a newbie, a rookie, or an apprentice.

Yes and you have made 2,300. That's always been there.

The waving hand is exactly like the one that comes up by new members names at facebook groups.
They're trying to be like facebook. That's nothing to aspire to.

I just got a leaf. Apparently I'm an "Apprentice" now. Apprentice to who? And for what? Do they even know what an apprentice is, or did they just see it on the cover of a Harry Potter book?

Oh good lord.

"Achievements is Invision Community’s native gamification system baked into our latest update, 4.6."

I'm not liking the term "baked in." I hope that doesn't mean it can't be taken out. Surely there's a patch or something?
I know nothing about coding, but there's usually a fix. Remember when Windows 8 came out? A lot of us got rid of those horrible tiles by installing a patch that gives you an old Windows 7 style start button. I still use a patch and I'm on Windows 10. (For those who are curious, here it is https://www.startisback.com/ ) I know a forum and an OS are two very different things, but my point is that even "improvements" that look hopeless have good, smart people crafting workarounds.

If there's a charge for something to get rid of this, I don't mind kicking in. I seriously loathe it.

"We’ve dreamed up innovative actions for community leaders to publicly recognize members who show up and participate in meaningful ways."

Meaningful ways? This thing would "recognize" people for flooding the board with meaningless content. "I like cheese sandwiches." BOOM! You got a badge.
And the "community leaders" aren't doing this. It seems to be completely automatic.

We have members who participate in meaningful ways - timtoldrum and _R_ post amazing content, Raggy cracks me up with those gifs, gregory can find anything...the list goes on. But that isn't what's being recognized. What's being recognized is sheer volume and potential spamming and flooding. Diarrhea of the keyboard.

"Rules

Rules are actionable processes set up in the admin panel.

Here are what members can earn Points for:

New poll is created

It looks like these can be set manually. Can they be turned off completely?

This might be good - the ranks can be changed from Newbie, Apprentice, etc.

There's another board I visit (it uses SimpleMachines software) where they couldn't get rid of a feature like this, so they made totally inappropriate and hilarious ranks: "DESERVED IT", "One Armed J*** Moppers", "A** Polyp", etc. I don't think this is the venue for THOSE ranks, but changing them to something that shows in a very obvious manner that they're not meant to be taken literally would be a HUGE improvement.

Just brainstorming here. And I hope never to get the light bulb. It looks like someone trying to squeeze into too-small Spanx:

So now it tells me "30 points to my next rank". I think that's new. Let's  see how many points this post gets me...

ETA: Apparently it's a countdown. Now I'm at 25 points.

It's pretty random. I have a One Year badge but I've apparently been here since 2017. At some point, probably in a day or so, I'll make a post and it will jump to Two Years, etc.

Hrmmm. We'll keep an eye on it out of curiosity. I'm still not a fan.

ETA: Another 5 points for this post.

It can't be totally baked in - my other invision forum doesn't have this stuff.

Weird. It's only on my phone, not on my laptop. It's a little pop-up at the bottom of my screen, after going to the three bars at the upper right hand corner:

So I just sent @gregory a PM and PMs also award points. It promoted me to Rookie. I also got a Conversation Starter Badge.

Maybe they didn't do the update yet?

Just checked my phone. I only have 55 more points left before they put that lady pulling up her Spanx on my avatar. Do not want.

I think we get points for time earned or online. I was at 50 points away earlier and now I'm at 45 although I haven't posted anything.

So even if we were to completely stop posting, this thing would continue its inexorable march to the next idiotic title. I could literally die tonight, and that thing by my avatar would continue to alternate between leaves and Spanx, then share symbols, stars, confetti thingies, and finally crowns. Might as well call that last one "Ascended Master." 🤮
But we "earn" those.
Ack.

There are rank and badges; actually it seems I already earned 6 "rare" badges, like "collaborator" and "posting machine" 😁

It's a trick to stimulate posting on forums.

If we can rename the badges, we could do it after the Major Arcana?

Although that would mean all new joiners would be Fools… 😬

Oh they will have - BUT the admin is a professional coder - so good he was headhunted by fartbook; he probably knows how to stop it.

It's more likely to stop us posting. But it occurs to me that I can block them on threads with my trusty ad blocker....

ETA Yes - I can. But it leaves a white patch in the avatar where it used to be, so I unblocked them.

It LOOKS as if you had to decide not to have them when you upgraded.... I have whined on their forum. But other posts suggest you can disable "achievements"....

You will be pleased to learn it is a "gamification" feature. They seem not to realise that a lot of invision sites aren't gaming sites....

If LF can get rid - we might also lose our trophies. I will SO live.... But there is a suggestion that we (she) should be able to disable it (it hasn't happened yet, but a few others want it...)

I am also appalled to see that the guy who brought this in is seen as the best thing that has happened to invision in years. My blood runneth a bit chilly....

I can tolerate a white patch until this thing is disabled. How is that done again?

ETA: Posting this got me bumped up to the bottom-heavy woman pulling up her girdle rank. I need this GONE.

Not according to Wirth. 😁

What adblocker do you use ? Click on the icon in your toolbar and you should get an option to "block element. Highlight the badge (be VERY careful not to highlight more than that...) and OK it. You have to do it for each individual badge and it makes your profile look VERY odd.

Really all that would need to be done if (and that's a big if) LF keeps the ranks to the add the word "Forum" ahead of each of the ranks: "Forum Newbie", "Forum Rookie", "Forum Apprentice", etc. Just a thought.

ALL of them with whatever names are VILE. They rank people. NOT OK.

And I think our actual trophies are an integral part of this as they seem to have shrunk (I don't actually mind, but bleah.)
