Hi everyone, nice to be here! I'm new to tarot and I'm not a reader, just very fascinated by it and want to learn more so more of a hobby than anything! I don't have spirit guides or any spiritual gifts so I'm not sure I would make a good reader but I'm looking forward to reading all your posts and learning more about this fascinating art 🙂

Welcome @rosieblack!  You don't need any 'occult' powers to be a tarot reader!  It takes practice and learning the card meanings to be a reader, that's it!  This is a good place to dive in with your new 'hobby.'

Thank you! I just figured the messages or the cards that are chosen in response to questions would come from a higher power that you're tuned into. I'm not entirely sure how tarot works!

Nope, no higher power!  Each card has an image on it and that image has a meaning.  Make sure you start out with a Rider-Waite deck,  it will be easier to learn the card meanings.  A tarot deck is made up of 2 arcanas- Major and Minor.  There are 22 major cards that are very strong messages the cards want you to know.  They are cards from 0 - 21, quite often presented in Roman numerals but not always.  The minor arcana deals with everyday life more or less.  Their messages are not as strong as the major arcana and the duration of the message passes by faster.  There are 4 minor arcana each in a suit.  They range from an Ace to 2-10 and then a Page, Knight, Queen and King.  The last 4 named are court cards and they have a little different function than the cards from 2-10.  If you have a deck now, take your your cards and see if you can identify the major arcana cards and minor ones and look for the court cards.  They are usually faces of people.  And most of all, have fun learning!  Tarot is fascinating!

So, if you don't mind me asking, where do the answers come from? If it's not from a higher power, do the cards themselves just have a sort of supernatural element to them? Sorry if I'm just being stupid! I have found many readings to be so accurate and I'm so fascinated about where the messages actually come from.

Welcome to the forum!

 

This all depends on the beliefs of the reader.  It's often up to our own interpretation on how things come about!  Not all readers are into the spiritual or believe in higher powers, but some of us do.  This is something you'll have to discover yourself over the course of your tarot journey. 🙂

As @Little Fang said, some readers do draw from a power either external or internal but this is something that you will develop as your personal style.  For me, I trust in the cards that I draw, I trust the cards before me are the message for me to interpret for my client or sitter.  This is where intuition or personal beliefs can come in.  But even if you have no 'powers' how you interpret the message before you is YOUR power.  How well you are connected to your cards.  That's why it's always good to learn the card meanings early on, then you can spend more time developing your own style.  Read, follow YouTube videos and ask questions.  Questions are good, they help you learn faster. 😉

You could miss out on all the fun of reading cards and you don't need to have any psychic or medium skills, or maybe we all have those skills innately? I don't know! But pick up a deck, get a book to learn with and give them a go in learning. You might be surprised. One suggestion if you want to learn is Joan Bunning's free LearnTarot course, this is the online version of her book. You can work through the lessons and it has exercises and it helps you learn all the basics

Hi I'm back 😄. I didn't see this reply before so thanks! I picked up Kim Krans's Wild Unknown deck as it was recommended to me. I find the definitions a little bit vague when trying to answer questions but I love the deck. It's mostly centred around animals and nature which is me to a tee. I'm a big animal and nature fan and it also has so many of my favourite animals in it. I have also bought the Rider Waite deck as I've seen other readers using multiple decks. Do you do this? So far I'm finding the cards that I pull in relation to my questions to be really on point. It's quite amazing! I worry a little that my subconscious or emotions are affecting the cards I draw so I'm going to get readings from another reader in between to check how they match up to my own.

The Wild Unknown and RWS are great decks to have and to start with 🙂

 

The Wild Unknown is a great deck for intuitive reading. It's uniqueness is that it has no humans for the court cards or any of the cards and the art has optical illusions. You might read the cards one day as this idea and another day the picture looks different to you. Or something colourful calls your eye. It's designed to do that. Although there are meanings and keywords for the cards, it works so well to just look at the picture. The RWS as well but you can find so many resources online to find many many different opinions about each card to help your study 🙂

 

When you are starting out I really recommend keeping it simple. But you can use multiple decks if you want, just remember it adds to your time and energy on the readings. I would only use multiple decks in my experimental readings, I wouldn't use them in my regular readings because it's just making it overly complicated. I like to use different systems as well, a tarot deck and an oracle deck together. But I mostly just use one deck per reading. You can get just a good reading from keeping it simple.
