Tarot: Is it all in our heads or are spirits talking to us?

I definitely feel that there is something... other... about how Tarot works. Fot years I thought it likely that it worked only through our abilities to construct patterns, and the cards could be effectively random, but in recent years I've become convinced that there is something "paranormal" (i.e. not currently understood by science) in both the selecting of the cards, and the interpreting of them. Far too often, the cards give me answers that make far more sense than I have any right to expect. Sometimes I ask questions where I'm not even sure how the answer could be put across... and yet it is, clearly and with more information besides. Too often, they reveal things about other people's lives that I've never been exposed to, consciously or unconsciously. Where does the information come from..?

Spirits? Don't know about them, but I do now feel it's entirely possible that consciousness can survive in a disembodied form; indeed, that may well be the primary form (see below). I never used to give much credence to spirits as conscious entities, but I'm having my mind changed by diving into 'ghost hunting' (horrible phrase), both other peoples' investigations, and my own. Interestingly, I'm finding ways to use the Tarot to deepen my communication and empathy with any spirits I may encounter... but my feeling is that the cards work independently of them. I haven't asked them that directly, but must do so...

My best take is that it's all down to the universal consciousness (à la panpsychism, animism...). We live as part of a universal tapestry of information, and it is this that is fundamental to reality. Physical bodies, brains, and the like are a manifestation of it, but complex thought (as represented by conscious brain function) has the side effect of mostly limiting our experiences to that realm; it is calculating, rational, and that's how we tend to see the world on a daily basis. We're mostly not even aware of anything beyond our physical senses and internal monologues. The cards, I suspect, are one of the ways that we can see through the physical world, and access the world of information. They're a tool that allows us to communicate with that deeper level of ourselves; a collaboration between our disembodied subconscious (which knows where each card is, and how we will interpret it) and our conscious, waking mind (that can put the information into a form that our normal waking mind can understand).

All the usual caveats apply: nobody really knows, yadda yadda... 😊

@Wanderer Your ‘ghost hunting’ sounds fascinating! I hope we’ll get to hear more about it at some point!

Once I've got a bit further into it, maybe... still finding my way at the moment. Recently spent a weekend at a supposedly haunted bothy, and... well, it really does seem to be. I need to go back, though, to try to understand what's going on better!

@Wanderer Be cautious with that please, don't ask to much to try and bring in spirits through cards.

Assuming the reader is mentally stable - and I have no reason to think Wanderer isn't - I don't see any danger in this, even though TV would tell us otherwise. 😉

People ask me about this stuff sometimes and I read on it. I haven't opened any portals to hell.

Good to know, Katrinka! 😁

Eric, I think the key (if one is worried about things like potential attachment) is to use the cards as an independent source of information, and not to try to create (or, indeed, allow) a direct linkage to any spirits that might be there - assuming they exist! This is where it potentially really matters how the cards work. Although, as said, I see them as a tool for reaching inaccessible (but, in a sense, internal) regions of information, it's worth noting that none of us really know... so yes, I'll be cautious, regardless!

I believe it's spirits.

My dad passed away a couple of months ago and I sit him on the table and use his urn for energy. I chose an urn which has a built in candle holder, so I use him for light and energy for my readings. I also keep my cards inside the velvet bag that his urn came in.

Every reading I've done since including him have been accurate and spot on. So I believe he is giving me guidance.

I feel connected to him through the cards.

I would agree with Wanderer on this - re universal consciousness etc. We are usually not able to access that consciousness and the knowledge/information contained there and the cards are the means to do that.

Wow, this is incredible.

Can you give an example of a recent reading you did?

Sadly the original poster you quoted asked to delete their account a while ago @TarotNewbie101

They won't be able to reply about how they got this guidance 😔

Is it possible when people say spirits are speaking to them, that they mean there is a feeling something intuitive that comes from reading the cards.

i won’t say the spirits speak to me but when I read cards there is a feeling where something tells me the card is trying to tell you this or that
