What do you all do with decks that come in those gigantic boxes (without a smaller box)?

This is a bit of a silly question, but I'm curious to hear what you all do with decks that come in those gigantic kit boxes - like the Forest of Enchantment or the Everyday Witch. The boxes are beautiful, but man, they are too big (for me) to cart around, and they sadly don't come up with a smaller folding box inside. I put my decks in bags, but I'm paranoid they'll still get banged up if they're not in a box. What do you all do with them? Elastic? Lead box? Protection spells? 😆

Not silly, particularly if you ever intend to sell the decks. Boxed decks like this from Llewellyn etc go on a bookshelf, just like books. If I were to use one of those decks extensively rather than weekly I'd leave the box on the shelf.

deck/lwb boxes remain with their decks and stand on their sides in a drawer. Again, if I were to use one deck extensively, I'd leave the box aside.

I sell off decks every couple of years and you never know what might become collectible. Boxes make a large difference in proceeds!

If space were a problem I'd quit buying decks 🙂  Some people fold down all their boxes and store them in one place.

Thanks for the tips - These are great. Note to self - Keep boxes in good shape! Seeing some of the prices of decks that are out of print, you are totally right. I guess that's where the collectible factor comes in!

When you find yourself using the deck regularly (and leaving the box on the shelf), what do you with the deck? A deck bag?

I keep them in boxes on shelves, much like AJ.  It's easiest. And keeps the book handy with the deck, too.

Anything in one of those big boxes--or with what amounts to a bad box, I have a few of those--I tend to pull out and put into a bag, and put the box into storage, while I'm using it. When I'm not using it I put it back in the box.

Over time I've become a huge proponent of simpler box styles, so I tend to avoid any of the 'limited' editions that come with such things if I can.

@gregoryThat makes sense!

@Niobium I totally feel the same way - It's a beautiful set, but I think if it was availableas  just a simple deck in a little box, I would have gone with that. I like being able to pop the deck, box, and all into a normal sized Tarot bag. I'm always a little nervous to put the cards without any box into a bag, in case they get banged around. But I suppose a little wear and tear adds character! I think for this particular deck (Forest of Enchantment), I'll likely end up storing the deck in a bag as I use it frequently, and store the box away.

I make decks a handmade pouch or wrap if the box isn't suitable (either too big like your issue here, or the box is too well loved).

I've not had any issue with decks being damaged in bags, including when I've taken them camping.  I think the trick is to have a bag that isn't too big so there's less movement of the cards.

As with your answer to my spreadless spread question, your answer is both reassuring and so helpful - Thank you! Also, that’s amazing that you make your own wraps and cases. How wonderful!

Well, it seems the box will be going into a bookshelf, and the deck into a bag shortly.

Have you seen the thread on making deck cases?  There are some lovely bags from a number of creative folk there!

I do a lot of textile work, if I can try and make something rather than buy it, I probably will! 😆

Wow, I've just read the first few pages, but this is super impressive. My Mother-in-Law is an excellent sewer, so I may have to enlist her to aide me in making some bags!

I rotate through all my decks, using each one as it comes up for a week, maybe once or twice a year for two weeks. That deck won't be used again until it's next turn up in rotation, after all my decks have been used.

I have two deck holders (which were birthed as napkin holders) to set the cards in between uses, and the box rests nearby 🙂

I found I despised using bags so don't. When we travel weeks or months at a time I have two decks I printed myself that I carry with me in their own boxes. Each deck has cards from 78 different decks, printed at the same size so no shuffling problems. If one of those gets damaged I can just print out a new one. And every day I can have a new deck, or so I tell myself.

so my long winded way of answering your question about long term use of a deck, I don't. Otherwise my practical side would just have one deck period.
