Lorem Posted July 21, 2022 Posted July 21, 2022 Hi everyone! I'm an absolute beginner in Tarot reading and due to lack of confidence in my ability to choose the "right" cards, I like the idea of jumpers. So under the assumption that you do include jumpers in the reading, how would you read them if you get a bunch of 3-5 packed together and another single card jump in the same shuffle and land themselves in the 3rd and "4th" position of a 3 card spread? 🙏 Lorem
vulprix Posted July 21, 2022 Posted July 21, 2022 (edited) Hmm… I think I get what you mean when you say you “like the idea of jumpers.” You’re saying that when you get jumpers, you enjoy considering them and reading them because choosing cards based on intuition + choice due to “lack of confidence” (your words) is more intimidating? I think in this situation, there are multiple things you can do. 1. Not everyone uses a spread with a designated number of cards and places. Try reading with simply the number of cards that feels right and see how that goes. 2. Read the spread, and read jumpers separately however they seem relevant to you (extra warnings/messages/etc.). 3. (My personal suggestion) Build your confidence in choosing your cards! In my opinion, reading the tarot should hone one’s intuition and make one feel in active dialogue with the cards. It is not a passive thing. You are making the choice to shuffle and read on a topic; make the choice, too, to decide on your cards, whether you include jumpers or not. Also, personally, I don’t get many jumpers. (But when they happen, I do consider them.) It may be a shuffling technique thing. Try to gain control over your shuffling the best that you can. If you are getting many jumpers, it sounds like cards may be flying more than usual—maybe you favor large decks that are harder to shuffle? I hope you can work out a method that is right for you, both with shuffling and your mindset when it comes to reading. Good luck! Edited July 21, 2022 by vulprix
Lorem Posted July 21, 2022 Author Posted July 21, 2022 vulprix, thank you for the thorough answer! You understood my intention exactly. I shuffled while thinking about my question and spread slot until I got jumpers. I actually asked about something very meaningful to me, therefore was overwhelmed by the amount of cards I ended up with. I completely accept your advice, and will work on building my confidence in choosing cards. Also, I felt that having a basic spread structure helped me narrowing down the interpretation possibilities. But I'll take on the challenge of daily pulls to build up my confidence and explore interpretation directions and relations between cards.
DanielJUK Posted July 21, 2022 Posted July 21, 2022 I have seen in previous discussions about this here that some people just disregard them and so you have to decide how you want to deal with them. Like @vulprix I rarely get them but I see them as important and so would do 2 or more cards in the position they "jumped" in. I think they are like destined to be there or something, I've declaring my tarot woo side 🙂 . Context is important with them like one time I dropped a deck of cards (disregarded those), another time a card was desperate to come out with another for a position. I see each situation with them depending on the context. You could experiment with them, do they aid to your readings or waste of time? Usually when you are dealing, they come out at a position, like 2 for one position. If you are doing a freestyle spread, you can just include them in the combined message. There was an old discussion about this topic in the early days of the forum..... There is even a shuffling technique that uses them..... I think when you get jumpers, it's a bit of a dilemma. There are no wrong answers in how you deal with them, just work out what will work best for you 🙂

I am so glad you are receiving feedback that is helping ☺️ Set spreads are a great thing! I like @DanielJUK’s suggestion regrading multiple cards in the same position. I have never done things that way. I hope that honing your reading technique goes smoothly…but with some excitement, too! 😁
Lorem Posted July 21, 2022 Author Posted July 21, 2022 (edited) I'm getting a sense for the importance of what one feels inclined to do at a given moment in a reading. I already applied the advice to experiment with pulls instead of jumpers and to try more general readings, and pulled one card intentionally earlier and even though I'm still not sure how to interpret it, the overall subject is very relevant to me these days, and can even shed light on my yesterday's reading. It added points to my confidence level. Thank you both for helping see more options and for the support 🤗 Edited July 21, 2022 by Lorem
