Page of Ghosts Posted December 30, 2017 Posted December 30, 2017 Hi guys, Seems like I'm starting a tarot deck project for 2018! The working title is The Page's Tarot, because of my name on this forum and since I feel a bit like a small Page embarking on this long journey. Basically I'll be recreating the RWS deck as an art project since I'm very fond of it, warts and all. I'll probably change up some things as I go on with my project and I'm open for it to morph into something else dependant on what those changes might be. So far I've made two cards as gifts, the Queen of Cups and the Hermit, which will probably have to be recreated for myself. Luckily I have a primitive lightboard, a glass top table, to help me with that. I had so much fun doing those and it really pushed me to work on my art, that I decided I would try to make all the 78 cards. Gasp! :o I'm working on the Star and the Page of Cups as of now and I'll create cards as I feel like doing them, in no particular order. I figure making a thread here could be good to boost the morale and you could yell at me if I haven't posted in a while so here is one of the cards I've made so far, the Hermit. Will post the others as I go and hopefully I'll be able to finish it :)
RavenOfSummer Posted December 31, 2017 Posted December 31, 2017 This is beautiful- I love your art style! Please continue to keep us updated, PoG :D
Padma Posted January 1, 2018 Posted January 1, 2018 Really lovely, Page! Good luck with the project :) It looks like watercolours to me. Is that what you are using?
EmpyreanKnight Posted January 2, 2018 Posted January 2, 2018 This is nice, Page of Ghosts. Did you draw this from scratch?
Page of Ghosts Posted January 2, 2018 Author Posted January 2, 2018 Thank you all :* Yes, they're watercolours, fineliner for the lines and gold ink for his light. I did use a ruler to check the size of his staff, where to place his back and some other small things I think, but I try to freehand most of what I do and then check it against my Centennial if something looks a bit off and I can't seem to fix it myself. I need to work on those skills to tranlate what I see to the paper :) I do these at 2x2 cards from that deck - it seems managable and gives room for enough detail.
EmpyreanKnight Posted January 3, 2018 Posted January 3, 2018 I told you - you only have to believe in your art, Page of Ghosts. :D I know that you will eventually develop your own style and vision when it comes to the Tarot - something that will set your cards apart from the crowd. Who knows, in the future we may be discussing a deck that you yourself created in the DOTW forums. :)
Page of Ghosts Posted January 3, 2018 Author Posted January 3, 2018 I hope I will! Your reading was super helpful in November ;D I figured I'd start with an "easier" project like this to push myself to work continuously and hopefully finish it, and at a later point create a more original work. So far I'm surprised at how alright I'm doing with the sketching and painting despite a few hiccups as I learn to work with this medium and how to tape loose leaf paper down.
Page of Ghosts Posted January 6, 2018 Author Posted January 6, 2018 So far January has been a bit slow in the art department - been busy with D&D and other social gatherings - but I'm almost done with my Star. I'm not 100% happy about her - she had warm brown hair that didn't work out and I'm not too sure about this blonde gouache I covered it with - BUT I won't bore you too much with my moaning ;) I'll leave her as is for now and work on some other cards, then I can go back in at a later point with fresher eyes. I'm totally stealing these from my own instagram account, haha, and I'll probably link to it at a later point since I post WIPs there. I'm struggling a bit with figuring out how to best deal with my watercolour paper and I had some bad luck with trying out butchers tape for this one, hence all the paint around the edges :P
Page of Ghosts Posted January 7, 2018 Author Posted January 7, 2018 Just got a PM that Nivian received her painting from the gift swap, the Queen of Cups, so I can now post the cropped instagram version of it here. This will also have to be recreated at a later point from the failed first attempt but I'm very happy with this painting. Working on XXI - The World now :)
Page of Ghosts Posted January 7, 2018 Author Posted January 7, 2018 Here is what I have of The World so far. I'm so pleased with that cow/taurus, I think it's the first time I've tried to draw a cow too. The lineart and the colouring I have so far.
Page of Ghosts Posted January 7, 2018 Author Posted January 7, 2018 It would post the lineart so here's another post! Featuring the RWS off to the side.
Guest Posted January 7, 2018 Posted January 7, 2018 that is great. you are truly inspiring and you will be done in no time at this rate. 8)
Page of Ghosts Posted January 7, 2018 Author Posted January 7, 2018 that is great. you are truly inspiring and you will be done in no time at this rate. 8) I hope I won't be taking too long - Pam and Arthur did most of the work designing the cards so it's not as much work as coming up with purely my own imagery :) I'm doing the cards all out of order so if I'm in the mood for a certain card that will be the one I'm doing.
Bookworm Posted January 7, 2018 Posted January 7, 2018 Those are really beautiful, Page of Ghosts. I imagine that creating your own RWS must add a lot to your feeling for the cards.

Yes, there are a lot of little things I didn't really notice before that I get to know better. Like the goofy merbabies on the Queen of Cups' throne, where at least one of them looks like they're giving her a proper mean look :D
EmpyreanKnight Posted January 8, 2018 Posted January 8, 2018 I love how you put metallic ink touches on the RWS images. AFAIK that has not yet been done before.
Page of Ghosts Posted January 8, 2018 Author Posted January 8, 2018 I love how you put metallic ink touches on the RWS images. AFAIK that has not yet been done before. Thank you, putting gold and silver ink on things I image would be golden or silvery is a lot of fun! I only wish my gold ink was as nice as the silver. The silver is more solid while in the gold you can see more of the individual particles. The Golden Universal Tarot by Lo Scarabeo has gold foil details so I doubt I'm the first, but it looks pretty nice 8)
EmpyreanKnight Posted January 8, 2018 Posted January 8, 2018 I also have the LoS Golden Universal, and I love it to bits! Still, it has gold foil, not metallic ink. The images there are from the Universal Tarot by de Angelis, which is his interpretation of the RWS. It does not gild the actual RWS images by Smith. :)

If I was to actually make all the 78 cards and make it into a deck I wonder what I should do about the metallic inks... I think I'll worry about it when I have 70+ cards ;)
Page of Ghosts Posted January 10, 2018 Author Posted January 10, 2018 I finished The World this weekend :)
Page of Ghosts Posted January 10, 2018 Author Posted January 10, 2018 ... and I'm currently working on The Moon. The wolf looks kinda funny to me but I like the little dog. He always looked very impressed by the moon to me and sometimes I wonder if the wolf even exists or if he is something awakening inside the dog in the light of the moon..
Page of Ghosts Posted January 19, 2018 Author Posted January 19, 2018 Managed to finish off The Moon. It's not my favourite but I can always deal with that later. There's no more room for perfectionism and I need to finish two more cards before January is over, as I had planned ;)
Page of Ghosts Posted January 19, 2018 Author Posted January 19, 2018 Decided I wanted to make a few minors now and I went with the easiest of them all, maybe? The Three of Swords. I tried outlining in coloured pencils instead of my usual fineliners because I struggle to see which line is the right one in normal grey pencil, but fineliner sometimes looks too harsh I think. I'm not done with this yet and will probably do some sort of outline, but this time I might just use some very saturated paint :)
EmpyreanKnight Posted January 19, 2018 Posted January 19, 2018 That golden Moon card is so lovely, Page of Ghosts. I'm at a loss for words! And now we see you beginning to come to your own style with the 3 of Swords. I'm curious as to how you'd pull this off. I got excited when you used the term oversaturated. My favorite 3 of Swords cards always have the rich, bold, bloody reds that I prefer.
