Here is another strange depiction of the RW 9 of wands.

In the RW we have a gentleman standing in front of 8 wands and then holding a wand.

In the Volatile deck is a human head on an animal body. A centaur with 9 wands behind him.

I know the deck was created from antique plates- but why the centaur for the 9 of wands?

This card doesn't fit the tradional RW meaning. I don't get it.

The Volatile has a Centaur in front of 9 wands, which appear to be the entrance of a cave?

Before I go look up why the deck creator put these plates together, what's your take on it?

Hi @BriarRose. This question and your other question about the Eight of Wands are interesting and well expressed. What a beautiful deck! Thank you for bringing it to my attention. (By the way, the name is actually Terra Volatile.) I admire you for wanting to work out the meanings yourself and inviting others to do the same, rather than going immediately to the source. My brain is feeling old and tired tonight, probably because it is old and tired, so I took a short cut and bookmarked what the deck creators had to say at https://terravolatile.com/wands/. Then I immediately added the Terra Volatile to my wish list!

I'm looking forward to reading what others have to say. In the meantime, have you tried using traditional RWS keywords and applying them to these cards? I'd love to hear your ideas.

Hi @BriarRose, @joy kindly put both your posts together here as they are on the same card topic 🙂

Both cards you are discussing are now in the Individual Card Meanings section, if you want to go through the whole deck, do think about starting a study group for it

Wow! That Nine of Wands is a bit unique. If its meant to be a Centaur, and Wands represent the fire sign, I would lean towards something about my fellow Sagittarians. Something within the complexities that make us move and our dualities from deep within ourselves.

Seems to me there's hardly a day without some sort of chaos we create for ourselves because there's always that one last challenge. Often times with fire, you can't see it while its burning up inside a wall somewhere.

My usual bad spelling and the usually auto correct that is wrong. Hello.

The Eight, Nine and Ten of Wands are associated with Sagittarius - the three last decans of a suit always belong to the mutable sign of the element (Sagittarius, Pisces, Gemini, Virgo). The Nine of Wands is associated with Moon in Sagittarius - intuition, but also fears. But this is not meant to be a Centaur, at least I don't see a centaur  here. According to the text on the website, it's a dog-man hybrid. Watchful, cautious.

In this card, a central character takes those conflicts very seriously, stuck in a combat position all the time.

Unlike the Seven of Wands, there are no visible adversaries, but still, the grotesque creature defends his territory aggressively, always alert – like a dog protecting his bone. This disquieting posture prevents us from having some rest and creates an illusory idea that everyone is conspiring against us.

It is true that the beast fought many battles as the scars and wounds may tell, but he became obsessed with it. We may say that he is so paranoid that he built a wall of wood sticks to cover the entrance of his cave, in order to avoid someone passing through. However, he is so consumed by his anxiety, he does not notice that the barrier impedes him from entering, too – creating, instead, his own jail.

The Nine of Wands advises you to relax and turn off your alert mode. Take a look around you, there is no need to be so defensive and overprotective.

I find the website excellent, and I refer to it when working with the deck.
