November Posted February 28, 2024 Posted February 28, 2024 Hello everyone, I was wondering about another possible meaning of the 4 of Pentacles as feelings.. This card often occurs to me to mean jealousy or no feelings at all, but what about someone holding back their feelings? Like you're attracted to someone, but you try to ignore your emotions. Could this make sense with the 4 Pents? Thank you in advance.
Misterei Posted February 29, 2024 Posted February 29, 2024 I seldom take 4 pents a jealousy. I take 5 wands or 5 swords or various other cards for jealousy. Yes. I do get this card sometimes as a person who's holding back their feelings. Here are examples how I've seen it in readings 4 pents as emotional withholding. The person might be repressed about emotions. Sometimes its a person who doesn't have the energy for a relationship. Like their time and energy is already spoken-for and they can't take-on anything else.
November Posted February 29, 2024 Author Posted February 29, 2024 Thank for sharing your take @Misterei. Yes, a person who's romantically unavailable.
Chariot Posted February 29, 2024 Posted February 29, 2024 (edited) In this context of a romantic relationship I would agree with @Misterei that the card is probably about repressing feelings, for whatever reason. This is not the same thing as not having feelings, by the way. It's about repressing them. It can also be about unwillingness to take risks—either risking a new relationship, or not wanting to risk losing one they are already in. Risk-aversion is a base meaning of the Four of Pentacles, and can be applied to whatever the reading happens to be about. Four of Pentacles is often indicative of fear of loss. Not loss itself, but fear of it. That is not always a bad thing! Caution and fear of loss is sometimes warranted. Edited February 29, 2024 by Chariot
November Posted February 29, 2024 Author Posted February 29, 2024 Hello @Chariot, thank you for commenting. Yes, what you say makes sense for me, not willing to give it a try.
Yola Posted March 1, 2024 Posted March 1, 2024 Hello! 😀 I totally agree. I've had the experience of this card pointing to a situation where the person keeps their feelings to themselves, retains them, contains them. Closed and passive. I also see the possibility of connecting some of these other concepts, such as: attachment, possession and control. Fear of losing what you have. When we cling to something or someone with all our claws. Don't take risks and don't venture out. I hope it's useful!
DanielJUK Posted March 1, 2024 Posted March 1, 2024 The big theme of the 4 of Pentacles for me, is about insecurity! They are fearful of their security and things changing and so try to grasp on as much as possible. If they hold on to their coins, material items and possessions then maybe they won't lose them? So everything they do is related to this. They fear change and want to control everything but we can't control what happens to us and our lives, only how we react and deal with it 🙂 . There is a spectrum of this as feelings I think. In a relationship or marriage, a person might make sure they have security with investments and a stable house. So they might be risk-adverse and thinking of the long term and making sure they are provided for. But also they might base things on fear rather than love. This could be from not wanting to change anything in a relationship and becoming very clingy, we can't keep our relationships the same, we are always changing! The worst manifestation of this is the controlling person in a very negative situation that the other person needs to get away from. It could go full on domestic abuse and a coercive controlling relationship but usually it's about little quirks and fears about changes to security. Relationships never stay the same as when you first meet, you have to go along with the journey. For someone. not currently in a relationship. It's going to be difficult getting them to go out with someone, again out of the fear of getting hurt. If they do get possessive or jealous. it's out of this fear. They also fear change and will fight against going from single to in a relationship. They need to leave their comfort zone. We can't control other people in relationships (alternatively, we really shouldn't be trying to do this!), so this does mean giving up something and seeing how it goes. Taking a risk! This could show up as someone who never asks out someone they are interested in because of these reasons, they don't want to reveal their feelings.

This is a very exhaustive explanation for the 4 Pents. I totally agree.
Grizabella Posted April 14, 2024 Posted April 14, 2024 On the old AT, I once saw someone (a very accomplished and experienced reader at that) say that in one of their professional readings, they saw the 4 of Pentacles as constipation and it was the right interpretation for that client and their question. 😄 Ya just never know, do ya? LOL
