Is there really a need for extended decks?

I'm new to Kipper and got the Fin de Siecle deck  and I'm not sure the 3 extra cards add much of anything, it seem to me those sentiments are reflected in other cards and as there's only the guidebook for meanings, I find I don't get a lot of value out of using them and have taken them out of my deck.

Kipper readers, what are your thoughts on extended decks? Is it useful to keep those cards in the deck when laying?

Welcome to the community and welcome to Kipper @Aerten :animated-smileys-signs-085:

if you would ever like to introduce yourself, you are welcome to start a thread in our introductions section here 🙂

Have a browse through this Kipper section sometime, there are other threads discussing the Fin de Siècle and some posts from Ciro himself.

I am on the fence about extra cards. Artists want to make a deck that is their own, based on the traditions of the system but want to add their own take and flair. I can see how maybe they aim to add more cards to make the deck complete in their system or perspective. Quite a few artists have added extra cards to Kippers and Lenormand decks. Ciro added about 5 extra cards to his expanded edition Lenormand as well. The good thing in these systems is the cards tend to be based on cartomancy, so they might be based on other historic cards out there, rather than just a random card that some artists throw into their tarot decks. I think some traditionists are against all added cards to the system, it works fine already with the traditional cards. Also, it's difficult for learning the system as you don't find any meanings outside the deck's guidebook. I have done readings on the other hand where they have added to the message of the reading, other times they are challenging to understand with the regular cards of the deck.

We can easily put them aside though if we don't want to read with them 🙂. It's a personal choice how we use a deck. You can learn to use it and put those cards aside and then add them and see if it improves the readings or doesn't. Decks are flexible, so you don't have to use them if you don't want to. Make it work for you

Paradoxically, I enjoy getting extra cards in decks and seeing what different creators have come up with, but I also never actually read with the extra cards and always take them out when I am using a deck.  I haven't got much experience with Kipper, and haven't seen many decks with extra cards before.

I would say to give them a try in a few readings, and see if they make sense or help with interpretation.  I have found the extra cards in Ciro Marchetti's Gilded Reverie Lenormand deck are extremely useful ...to the extent that I don't attempt to read with any other Lenormand deck!

I have heard screams, but I do occasionally read tarot having removed the court cards!  Sometimes court cards are very helpful but sometimes I find I get clearer answers without them gumming up the works.

I'd say do what works for you. But also, DO give the extra cards a few tries!  Why not?

I also love this deck, but I've found I only used the extra cards once or twice. I have my hands full just learning the basic 36 -- so the extra cards feel like a distraction. They are pretty tho. 😇
