Rachelcat Posted Monday at 03:30 PM Posted Monday at 03:30 PM Happy equinox, everyone! This week for me will be Florentia Antica Illustrated Playing Cards and Florentia Nova Illustrated Playing Cards by the creator of the Genoese Tarot. (I got them at the same time.) I have an interest in Firenze, Italy, for random reasons, so these were a necessary buy. The aces, courts, and jokers feature art, artists, and public figures of Renaissance Firenze. The pips are unillustrated. Some are double-ended, some aren’t. I’m not sure why one is “antica” and the other “nova” because they both seem to include people and things from approximately the same era. The Antica emphasizes purple, and the French-suited pips are regular black and red. The Nova is very yellow, with black and blue pips. I’m still trying to figure out how to use them together, but first, two interviews! What is your most important characteristic? 8♦ The deck is primarily a work of art celebrating works of art. What is your strength? J♠, Farinata degli Uberti He was an enemy of Dante’s political party, and Dante’s Inferno depicts him as eternally existing in a fiery coffin because he denied life after death. The deck celebrates Renaissance art and ideas without being Christian at all. Your weakness? Joker, Giotto Giotto was a celebrated artist of the late Middle Ages and early Renaissance, who, among many other works, painted the St. Francis chapel in Assisi and designed the campanile (bell tower) of Firenze’s cathedral. The deck is a little too scattered. It follows its theme but not in an organized way, that is, certain suits for certain types of art or something like that. What can I learn from you? A♥, Donatello, David, MCDXXX – MCDXL (1430-1440) David did what he had to do, even though he was a kid fighting a giant. This version isn’t as famous as Michaelangelo’s David, but probably more accurately portrayed as a boy or young man. I can learn to be bold and do what needs to be done even though I don’t look like (or think myself) that I’m strong enough to do that. And I don’t need to be praised or recognized for it. Doing what’s right is its own reward. How do I learn it? A♣, Unknown Artist, Patroclus and Menelaus, CCXXX BC – CCXL BC (230-240 BCE) An ancient Roman statue that was an inspiration to Renaissance artists. Menelaus holds the body of young Patroclus, Achilles’ boyfriend who pretended to be Achilles and was therefore killed in battle. This enraged Achilles, causing him to attack and lead the Greeks to victory. Two aces! Another young person who faked it in battle but this time didn’t make it. I can learn to be strong by realizing that there are consequences to that and doing it anyway. What will be the outcome of our work together? 2♥ Our hearts will meet! We will have a very good loving, equal relationship. Very different from the previous interview, only one illustrated card. I just noticed the purple line of the other deck is vertical, and the yellow line of this deck is horizontal. What is your most important characteristic? 8♠ It is very, probably too, intellectual. It’s trying to stay in the box created by the previous deck. What is your strength? 3♦ Same idea. It’s a work of art, but more work than art. Your weakness? 8♦ This was the strength of the previous interview. So same idea again. It attempts to repeat a success without as much success. What can I learn from you? 2♠ It can help me make decisions or understand two sides of an issue. How do I learn it? 6♠ I should use my own judgment and let the deck confirm it, rather than depending on readings so much. What will be the outcome of our work together? Q♥, Clarice Orsini She was wife of Lorenzo de Medici, ruler of Firenze. It was a political match, but they grew to have a loving relationship. Another “love” card as an outcome. I will love the decks, perhaps for unreasonable, purely emotional reasons. I’ll take it!

Bodhiseed Posted Tuesday at 12:08 PM Posted Tuesday at 12:08 PM I'm in this week with the Llewellyn Tarot paired with the Beasts of Albion. Thank you, Fire cat! 💓 It’s not brave to refuse to pay attention, to refuse to notice, to refuse to feel and know and imagine. The opposite of sensitive is insensitive, and that’s no badge of honor. ―Glennon Doyle The Page of Cups draws emotional people to him like iron fillings to a magnet. He is empathetic and compassionate, so people who hurt seek him out for his willingness to listen without being judgmental. He's incredibly attuned and sensitive, such that he can just look at a person and intuitively know how they feel. Yet he manages to keep his feet on solid ground by bringing his thoughts back to the sensations of his own body. Brock (Badger) lives in extended social tribes and is a home-loving animal.
