4 of Swords
The third decan of Libra, a decan ruled by Jupiter

Post at TabulaMundi.com - DECAN WALK: LIBRA 3, FOUR OF SWORDS – Part I – Tabula Mundi Tarot
Excerpt: "Surprising that the card is merely "truce" and not something more beneficial, with the Greater Fortune (Jupiter) and Lesser Fortune (Venus) involved. [Venus rules the sign of Libra] But in the first card below the Abyss in the Swords suit, we merely get a compromise or rest from strife. The suit of Swords is notoriously troublesome, just like the mind itself the suit represents. The Air element of the Swords suit is inherently turbulent, as the offspring of the two opposing elements Fire and Water."

For me the 4s seem to think they're the end product of the suit. We've arrived. There's a plateau now, and mighty Jupiter rules all the 4s (via Hermetic Qabalah) as well as this decan. The 3s have expanded. (The 3 of Cups Abundance is now the 4 of Cups Luxury, for instance) but... it's all about to crash and burn in the 5s. Libra wants to keep the balance, but the King of the Gods keeps expanding.

This 4 of Swords seems like a topical card, at least in the way Crowley viewed it. "It represents a refuge from mental chaos, chosen in an arbitrary manner. It argues for convention... Minds too indolent or too cowardly to think out their own problems hail joyfully this policy of appeasement."

Normally I'd talk about how Crowley had no patience for compromise or restraint. I think he liked energetic force of will, and anything else seemed like weakness to him. But current times being as dramatic as they are around the world, his quote denouncing truce reminds me of a number of political situations (that I won't discuss since it's not allowed - which I support).

There's always the question of what to do when we're pushed, even just at work or by a stranger at a stadium. We draw a line between letting little things go to be "the bigger person" vs knowing when to stand up for others and/or ourselves when it's important. Real harm. Personally, I have to be aware of my dislike of conflict. It's helpful in many cases; I'm not a drama llama, that's for sure. 😅 But I have to counterbalance that when it would be cowardly not to stand up for others and/or myself.

Reddit lately is full of people talking about what has and has not worked during this 4 of Swords Truce throughout history. I don't have the answers; we're stuck with choosing what we think is the least bad option in a bad situation. I just thought of these things when this card came up and all the sword points are momentarily balanced, tips aimed toward one another. In the Thoth, at least, this card is about to give way, one way or the other.

The RWS looks relaxed by comparison. Waite says, "Vigilance, retreat, solitude, hermit's repose, exile, tomb and coffin. It is these last that have suggested the design. Reversed: Wise administration, circumspection, economy, avarice, precaution, testament."

I think this every time I read/see a 4 card, connecting them with the energy of the Emperor.

I was recently told I avoid speaking up for myself and because of that I don't have intimate relationships and I put others before me - more to it of course, but this was the gist of it.

Oh, of course. I hadn't thought of that. Yes.  (Mary-El Tarot minors are heavily based on majors with the same number. Mentioned throughout her accompanying book. It especially changes the 9s, I think. )

I wonder though, since this person knows the side of you that you feel comfortable sharing with them. A relative used to tell me I was defensive about everything. Years later, I saw a therapist, and when I eventually mentioned that defensiveness was an issue for me, she said I seemed like one of the least defensive people she'd ever met. I still remember the surprise and how it felt to hear that. Not so much that one person was right and the other was wrong; I know we interact differently with different people. But just the idea that I might not be 'a defensive person' was new and lightened a load I was carrying. Anyway, I have no idea how much you speak up for yourself, but I like Ajahn Chah's saying, "Not sure, not sure," leaving room for uncertainty and self-reflection.
