jfjsjjdjxjdjw Posted January 10 Posted January 10 Is there a connection between zodiac signs and the tarot card readings yes or no
Grizabella Posted January 10 Posted January 10 I'm not very "up" on astrology. I know I'm Sagittarius and I know Temperance and maybe a few other cards are "Sag" cards but that's about it for me. I don't think card readings have a connection to Tarot readings unless the reader chooses to connect the two. I also know there are some decks that have astrological symbols on them, but I can't remember which decks or how the symbols were read in spreads. Sorry I'm not very helpful but this forum is just filled to the rafters with knowledge so someone (many someones, in fact) willl be able to answer you, I have no doubt. In the meantime, welcome to TT&M.

2dogs Posted January 10 Posted January 10 The underlying philosophy associates the cards with the zodiac signs, planets and elements so understanding those things ought to make them clearer.
Nemia Posted January 10 Posted January 10 I find that a basic knowledge of the zodiac signs, elements, planets and their relationships helps in working with the tarot, but it's not necessary. It depends on the deck you use. Learning to read the tarot is a lifelong learning process, and if you want to add astrology to that curriculum, do so. I found that tarot is a great teacher. Over the years, you simply pick up a lot of knowledge by reading books, forums and websites. You can't avoid it 😉
DanielJUK Posted January 10 Posted January 10 I moved this thread to the right section for this discussion 🙂
Alchemia_Auri_Tarot Posted January 10 Posted January 10 Yes, all the tarot cards have an astrological resonance. They are either related to a planet, sign, or transit. The book Tarot & Astrology by Corrine Kenner is a great resource!
Tanga Posted January 11 Posted January 11 Somewhere along Tarot's fascinating convoluted history - Astrology and zodiac signs were added into the mix. However, you don't need to know about it to read. As evidenced by @Grizabella who's been reading for a million years and knows next to nada. I am the same. Astrology is a huge subject - and I never got to grips with it... though I have ofcourse read about it. So I have a smattering of understanding on the matter. A great majority of readers today do use it, so it would be useful to learn about it.
Ix Chel Posted January 13 Posted January 13 (edited) Here is a link with the astrology connections https://biddytarot.com/blog/tarot-astrology-golden-dawn/ Astrology can be really helpful to learn the court cards. Corinne Kenner has written a good book about Tarot and Astrology. Also her book Astrology for writers is good. It has a fun way to learn astrology. Edited January 13 by Ix Chel
DanielJUK Posted January 13 Posted January 13 I always love @Rose Lalonde's astrology tarot associations tutorial.....
geoxena Posted January 13 Posted January 13 If you believe in astrology and want to connect it to tarot, then there is a connection for you. If one does not believe in astrology and doesn't want or need to connect it to tarot, then there is no connection for that person. There are no rules set in stone that decree they are or aren't connected, no matter how strongly someone may insist on their viewpoint.
Rose Lalonde Posted January 13 Posted January 13 In the late 18th century, Eteilla created a system that matched astrology to tarot. Later the Golden Dawn Society, and members Waite/Smith and Crowley (together with Harris who was not a member), created decks with a different system of astrology from Eteilla. If you're asking, Was it originally in the tarot, then it's no. But if you're reading with the Rider Waite Smith deck or Crowley's Thoth, those card meanings were heavily influenced by astology (among other things) so it could be helpful to learn about the building blocks of the tool you're using, unless you prefer to read intuitively (how you see and are affected by the art in the moment without reference to already known card meanings). Even if you don't read strictly intuitively, you don't have to know astrology. Ideally the ideas are incorporated in the art, and just like you can drive without learning all about what's under the hood, you can read without learning how Waite and Crowley came up with meanings. So, astrology correspondences to cards are available to you, but not a must. (That said, I personally love astrology in tarot. I like seeing the way the influence of Venus or Aquarius, etc. will show up in multiple places across a spread and create a more cohesive story for me, in the way I read.)
