keychain Posted December 27, 2018 Posted December 27, 2018 Hey! I've been looking into buying a small bag (preferably velvet) or a small box that would fit a full deck for storage. I've explored the forum to search for a similar thread, but couldn't find one. This is the bag I am currently looking at: https://www.amazon.com/Navy-Velvet-Tarot-Paper-Mart/dp/B00GDPJMC8/ref=sr_1_10?ie=UTF8&qid=1545937685&sr=8-10&keywords=tarot+card+bag (Amazon is the only place I've looked on, as it's a site that is budget friendly and "trust worthy") I am curious to view any storage ideas for decks that anyone uses! Please leave links, pictures, descriptions, or ideas :)
Saturn Celeste Posted December 27, 2018 Posted December 27, 2018 Hi Keychain! You should be able to link images now, you have 5 posts. This is my storage corner, I use a combination of tables, shelves and a medicine cabinet. I also have this storage bag: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B005GUPWUC/ref=oh_aui_search_detailpage?ie=UTF8&psc=1 It's big! I have around 40 filled tarot bags in one and all of my video and audio equipment in the other. This storage I'm showing you is not small though! ;)
keychain Posted December 27, 2018 Author Posted December 27, 2018 Awesome thanks for letting me know, Saturn Celeste[/member] , I have now updated with the link! What a huge storage area!! I'm jealous :)) I currently only have two little shelves, but then again I only have one deck. Hopefully my collection will grow as large as yours one day! My shelves contain a variety of crystals and rocks, and the big box that my deck + guidebook came in. EDIT. Accidentally typed book instead of box.
Saturn Celeste Posted December 27, 2018 Posted December 27, 2018 When you get your space the way you want it, make sure to share it on that thread! ^-^
Bodhiseed Posted December 27, 2018 Posted December 27, 2018 I shared this (below) on another thread some time ago but thought I would share it here again. I originally made many of my own bags (though I would not consider myself much of a seamstress!) but I've also had good luck buying bags from Etsy sellers too. I cut down the big, floppy boxes that sets come in to deck size (or make boxes for decks that don't have one from shirt-sized gift boxes): I've got most decks in bags to protect the boxes from wear and tear which I keep on a modified bookshelf (I added some shelves). I used to fit the bag to the tarot/oracle (theme, color), but now that my collection has grown, I have tagged them to make identification easier:
Saturn Celeste Posted December 27, 2018 Posted December 27, 2018 Bodhiseed[/member] Wow!!! Your collection is amazing! I looked in your profile and I love how you have all your tarot decks paired with oracle and other divination systems. Very impressive!
keychain Posted December 27, 2018 Author Posted December 27, 2018 Bodhiseed[/member] that's amazing! I didn't even think of Etsy *facepalms* I love how organized you are with the labels! When I get more in my collection i will definently be doing that. :)
Bodhiseed Posted December 27, 2018 Posted December 27, 2018 Thank you Saturn Celeste[/member] and keychain[/member]. <3 I need to find my old sewing pattern for bags and share it.
keychain Posted December 27, 2018 Author Posted December 27, 2018 Bodhiseed[/member] If you post it on a separate thread, feel free to tag me!! I will definitely be trying it out :)
Bodhiseed Posted December 28, 2018 Posted December 28, 2018 keychain[/member] - I hope you can make sense of these instructions! 2 pieces of cotton fabric (one for the outside and one for the lining), 8 inches wide by 19 inches long 2 pieces of cording or ribbon, each 24 inches long I used thin cardboard (like for folders) to draw off a pattern so I could trace it with all the openings marked. If I were going to do this by hand, I would change all the 5/8" measurements to 1/2" to make it simpler. With the wrong sides of the two fabric pieces pinned together, mark the cord channel openings and the turn opening (see diagram 1) to see where to stop sewing and where to begin again. Remember to reinforce stitching where you stop and start. Seams allowances are 5/8". After sewing around the rectangle of fabric (stopping and starting at marked areas). Turn right side out and press with an iron. With a pencil, mark cord channels (see diagram 2) and sew channels on both ends of the rectangle, leaving openings on each side. Fold the rectangle in half (short end to short end) with lining side on the outside (see diagram 3); Sew the long sides together from the bottom of the cord channel, using a 1/4" seam. Turn right side out and thread the cord into the drawstring channel - the ends of one cord from the left side and the ends of the other cord from the right side. Tie the ends of each cord together in a knot. This bag is rather roomy width-wise for normal-sized decks, so you can adjust the side measurements if you want a tighter fit.
Bodhiseed Posted December 28, 2018 Posted December 28, 2018 Here's a photo of two finished bags, one with the Albano-Waite and one with Navigators of the Mystic Sea (inside the bag).
Bodhiseed Posted December 29, 2018 Posted December 29, 2018 If any of the sewing instructions are confusing, let me know and I'll try to make it clearer. :)
keychain Posted December 29, 2018 Author Posted December 29, 2018 OMG! Bodhiseed[/member] this looks great! I'm not an expert sewer, and I haven't sewed in about 4 years, but somehow I understand the instructions. I'll probably invite my grandma to do this with me (since she has a sewing machine and she's good at it) Thank you so much for this!!! :bthanks: <3 When I try it out (might not be till a while) I'll show you my creation! :)
Saturn Celeste Posted December 29, 2018 Posted December 29, 2018 If any of the sewing instructions are confusing, let me know and I'll try to make it clearer. :) Your pattern is awesome, Bodhiseed! I have a new Brother sewing machine I'd like to get out and try one of these days, I think making tarot bag would be a good test run!! Thank you very much. ((
Bodhiseed Posted December 29, 2018 Posted December 29, 2018 keychain[/member] and Saturn Celeste[/member], I'm glad it makes sense to both of you! Once you sew one bag, you will see how easy it is to adjust the seams to allow for smaller or larger decks.
Shanachie05 Posted January 13, 2019 Posted January 13, 2019 Bodhiseed[/member] - Thank you so much for sharing that pattern. I sew a lot and really enjoy sewing things that are practical and simple. Looking forward to making some bags for my decks and booklets now. I also love your tagging system. I was wondering how to actually know what was inside the bag, because I have a few bags with decks in them, and I just can never remember. Just recently added some decks to my family and they are stacked next to my recliner right now. They need better situating, for sure.
GreatDane Posted January 19, 2019 Posted January 19, 2019 VERRRY COOL, BODHISEED! I am SO not a seamstress. If I had to sew to dress myself, I would be wearing large garbage bags with ribbon as a belt! I don't have a big collection and don't know if anyone remembers Dark Nature Cases from YEARS ago, but I have several of my decks in those custom case and after they closed shop, a friend would do custom cases to fit and with fabric I wanted. AGAIN, I HAVE a small collection! So while it is a meager gathering, they are definitely well-dressed.
Asher Posted January 20, 2019 Posted January 20, 2019 VERRRY COOL, BODHISEED! I am SO not a seamstress. If I had to sew to dress myself, I would be wearing large garbage bags with ribbon as a belt! AMEN to not being a sewer, GD! One of my decks is in a Dark Nature case and I remember how much you love them. I spent several hours yesterday re-doing my Tarot space. I bought two beautiful gray metal shelving units at the Container Store (they fold!) Nice and sturdy and I got all my decks out of the fabric boxes they have been housed in for several years. Hard to find what I wanted, often had to look through several boxes, etc. Now they can breathe! I can see them all! And since this thread is about bags, I noticed something interesting (to me anyway...) In my collection of about 275 decks, 78 of them are in bags! :D
GreatDane Posted January 20, 2019 Posted January 20, 2019 HIGH FIVE, ASHER! Good thing I don't have a big collection of decks because I couldn't afford frocks for them all! Here's what I have my Bohemian Gothic in.
Asher Posted January 20, 2019 Posted January 20, 2019 Here's what I have my Bohemian Gothic in. Oooh, love it! The fleur de lys are gorgeous! Perfect for the BG. Thanks for sharing!
MysticMoonlight Posted January 20, 2019 Posted January 20, 2019 Wow, Bodhiseed! Fantastic bags! <3 You guys are all so creative and inspiring here! And the labels on the bags, such a good idea! GreatDane, that bag for your BG is gorgeous!
queenofwans Posted January 20, 2019 Posted January 20, 2019 I have a fairly modest collection, so I'm able to store all of my tarot decks in a chest. I keep the decks in their original boxes, unless the box is a larger box, and then in that case, I keep them in a drawstring pouch. The one exception is my Fairytale Tarot, which I keep in this beautiful little book box that I got for a mere $4 at a discount home-goods store. Fits perfectly -- thematically and size-wise!
Saturn Celeste Posted January 20, 2019 Posted January 20, 2019 queenofwans[/member] those are lovely storage boxes!! I'm surprised that top one holds so much! ^-^
