Hi,

I own tarot cards - RWS.

I also have Da Vinci Tarot- but not with me right now, they are back in my home country. They haven’t been used much either. I found them a bit complicated

I want to own a oracle deck..please suggest a deck that is simple and good for beginners like me.

Can I use the same deck for rituals too?

Please advise

Where do you start when suggesting a deck?  There are so many Oracle decks out there.

Is there a theme you feel drawn to?  That might help us make style better suggestions.  Some examples I can think of quickly:  Angels, animals, plants, lunar cycles, science, pagan, druid, etc.

My personal favourite for ease of reading is the Wild Unknown Animal Spirit - it fits with my reading style and I love working with nature themed decks.

I think that oracle decks are a much more personal choice than tarot decks.

Do some research online, have a look at pictures of the cards and see what cards you like the look of most, which ones can read machines into.

I'm sure others will be along with their suggestions soon too. :-)

Maybe it depends on what you are after in an Oracle.

Some provide gentle guidance and some are down the line very blunt and to the point. Slap in the face - take it or leave it!

Psycards are excellent and in my top 5 as well as Frouds Fairy Oracle - the first one. I have some great ones from Australia too.

Yeah, your personal preferences and interest will have to be the determining factor here. You can certainly use an oracle deck for rituals, but then you would have to have that in mind when you search for the right deck, because not all oracle deck will feel as suitable for ritual work. The matter of using the very same deck for readings as well as rituals, well that is also greatly determined by your personal beliefs and feelings. I started out having certain decks only for ritual use, because that is what felt right to me. But lately I have found that I don't mind to use that same deck for readings too, because when I shuffle my decks I can cleanse them of old vibrations and instill them with new energies/intentions. Most of my oracle deck collection has a nature or lunar theme because that is what I like. I have never resonated with angel decks or unicorn decks, but I do believe that those two categories are some of the most common ones for newbies to be drawn to. So you might want to check that out if you think you might like that. I have posted several of my readings that I have done with oracle decks. Some of my most used decks right now are: Dreamtime reading cards and Saltwater reading cards (both by Laura Bowen). Pythia Botanica and Creatures of the moon oracle (these two are independently published so they are a bit more expensive and not as easily obtainable).  Like Stephanelli, I also like the Animal spirit deck, but I do find that it is a deck that you may have to study a bit and it is not necessarily one that everyone will be able to start reading intuitively straight away. But despite that, a really great and balanced deck.

I am sure Saturn Celeste[/member] will stop by and give you some more suggestions. She has a really great collection of oracle decks (you can view it in her profile and she has links to pictures of every deck on her website too.)

Good luck!

I went off the proper Oracles with guidebooks and meanings given by the authors, a lot were a bit "New Age" for me, but Earth Magic wasn't bad, I had a feel for the meaning of cards like Mountain, Desert, Iceberg, Fog etc.

Hi ashwsh!  I love oracle decks but I'm fussy about them.  There are some things I do before I think about buying a deck.

1.  I look for the number of cards in a deck.  Early in my collecting days I bought some decks with only 23 cards in them and paid up to $15 for them.  Now they cost even more.  Because there are so many oracles on the market, it's easy to get sucked in by buying a deck because you feel you have to have it.  I look for at least 44 decks but prefer 52 or 66. Those are typical amounts of cards that can come in a box.

2.  The messages.  Some decks have very lengthy messages.  I tend to stay away from them.  I don't want my oracle card to narrate the reading, I want it to be a part of it.  (I use tarot and oracles cards together).  So I look for messages that are to the point that will work well in readings, not an essay on each card.  That just confuses the issue with me.

3.  Price.  There are some great mass market decks out there.  Indie oracle decks really suck up the money.  I have bought some like my most recent oracle dec, The Supra by Uusi.  That deck was worth every penny!  But there are plenty of more inexpensive decks on the market to try out before going for the big priced Indie decks.  My Indie copy of Flowers of the Night Oracle cost well over $70 with the shipping from Australia to the US and now it's on sale mass market for $21.95.  But it was one of the first Indie decks I bought and she gave some nice gifts in the box so I don't complain, but I do point it out with people new to oracle.

4.  When you say for ritual do you mean reading them like a tarot card?  Yes, almost all oracles come with little spreads of their own pertinent to that deck.  But again, I use them along with tarot cards in a reading and rarely do an actual 'reading' with oracle cards.  But many readers do oracle readings and they turn out awesome.  Raggydoll has some oracle readings around on the forum, so check them out.  ^-^

5.  Oracle to compliment a tarot deck.  I do have several oracle decks I purchased that I read with certain tarot decks.  The work to compliment each other and were bought for that reason.

Some decks for beginners I recommend:

Energy Oracle- the cards are lovely and the meanings are really easy to work with.  This is one of my work decks.

http://www.aeclectic.net/tarot/cards/energy-oracle/

Psychic Tarot (Oracle)- this is NOT a tarot deck.  But it's a great oracle deck.  You get a lot of cards for the price.

http://www.aeclectic.net/tarot/cards/psychic/

Shamanic Healing Oracle Cards- this is another workdeck.  I love it and it just fits in so nicely with almost any type of reading.  Like other oracle decks it has it's own spread also.

http://www.aeclectic.net/tarot/cards/shamanic-healing-oracle-cards/

Earth Magic Oracle Cards- the cards are really lovely!  When I first got the deck I used it all the time but I tend to always try out my newest decks first to I haven't returned to this deck but I will.  I love it!

http://www.aeclectic.net/tarot/cards/shamanic-healing-oracle-cards/

White Rabbit- this is actually an Etsy deck but not too over priced for an Indie deck.  I love the deck and it was one of my first oracle decks.  I use it all the time as well.  It's a very different art style.

http://www.aeclectic.net/tarot/cards/white-rabbit-oracle/

Tao Oracle- this is a great deck that I acutally do use it as a complete oracle reading.  I have used them with tarot but these cards are so outstanding I use them by themself.

http://www.aeclectic.net/tarot/cards/tao-oracle/

So I hope this gets you started.  Just watch your money when it comes to buying oracle decks! ;)

Saturn Celeste[/member] Thank you for your valuable inputs. From the first impression I’m drawn towards the energy oracle deck..I usually like to dwell on things before I make the purchase, so if the deck continues to be on my mind..I think it’s calling me 😊.

Thank you very much for your suggestions, I will definitely keep them in mind.

DownUnderNZer[/member] Interesting..I’m actually a person who is very blunt. I don’t like beating around the bush too. I like to keep things simple and not over complicate them. Which ones would you recommend for someone like me?

I agree about the number of cards 100%. under 44 is too small of a amount to be of use if used very often, the same cards come up too often and seem to muddy the readings for me,  although fine for 'just looking at'.

the Tea Leaf Oracle and Shell Oracle both have over 200. There was a thread last year specific to oracles with larger decks.

It’s interesting, am neither a nature person or moon. Angels and unicorn are not my thing too. Such artworks overwhelm my brain until and unless it’s been laid out in a simple manner. When I bought ‘Da Vinci’ deck, it was primarily that something drew me to it, but then I don’t know why it never cooperated with me. I don’t think we have given each other enough time. It’s been 5 years and it lies packed in a box back home in India. I have recently started to think of it again. But I don’t like anyone else touching my things so can’t ask anyone to get it. We will have to wait to see each other till I go back to the home country. But as a learning from this, I don’t want it to happen again with my new oracle deck.

I like pictures of people, or places..hopefully something around that will shout at me :-)

Oh if you're from India I have a deck I use for myself.  Normally I don't read for myself but if I do draw an oracle card, I use the Whispers of Lord Ganesha deck.

https://blueangelonline.com/whispers_of_lord_ganesha.html

It's my overall favorite oracle deck for myself.  It brings so much peace to my mind.

Thanks stephanelli[/member] ..basis inputs from all of you..I’m researching to find what clicks for me. I don’t want be swayed by some oracles that are ostentatious and attractive but sometime simple that does the job for me.

Will keep you posted when am close to finalising one for myself 😊

I was almost compelled to buy ‘Bhagvat Gita deck’ but something is just stopping me from within.

Oh I'm so glad you're getting the deck!!  It brings me so much peace!  I do it the same as a tarot deck.  I run each card through incense and ask for energy, vibrations and trust from each card.  Then I shuffle them really well.  I also have a blessing that I hold the deck to my chest and say the blessing.  All my decks are treated that way.  I also count the cards and make sure you have them all.  And check the cards out that there are no duplicates.  Let me know what you think about the deck when you get it!!  <3

Yes, it's a nice sized companion book.  It comes in a box set.  It's nice!  The cards are large but easy to shuffle.  And the images are extraordinary!  Ganesha makes me so happy. 🐘

I'm a beginner too, more like a newb actually.

I don't own a deck, part of the reason is that I have yet to see a deck I connect with.

Not only must I connect with it, but it should make sense to me too,

the structure must be reasonable so that I can actually read with it.

Random keywords without a system behind turn me off.

So far I only own RWS and The Modern Spellcaster Tarot.

RWS because it was vanilla Tarot, so I had nothing to truly object to,

and Spellcasters because I felt a connection.

Unfortunately there don't seem to be a plain vanilla oracle deck,

since there are so many different systems,

and all the artwork put me off in subtle or not so subtle ways most of the time.

I'm not even sure if I need an oracle deck or if it will just be a burden,

but since there was a beginner thread I thought I'd record my state of indecision here at least.

Going to add some decks to this post that sort of hit me right.

reall[/member] interesting deck, it doesn't hit me on a gut level, but thx for the Lemorand point of view.

It made me check it out, and there is apparantly a "vanilla" version that matches the RWS.

If I ever go for Lemorand I think I might settle for that one.

The art of Amy Brown I can connect with, but her system is pretty nonexisting,

and hence it is just a bunch of images with random words connected.

The faries oracle deck came closest so far, the images are okay, yet they have an element of shadow I struggle with.

The system seems legit also, so it is a very subtle under-text of shadow that don't exactly match my own vibration so to speak.

Camelot oracle seemed fun, but no idea what I would do with it.

Clow cards look nice, but apparently out of print.

I like the look of Godesses and Sirens as well, but the system strikes me as shallow.

Kuan Yin, pretty, but I would struggle to connect with the imagery.

Victoria Frances Gothic, also pretty in a grim way, don't seem very functional though.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I'll add the cards I connect with under this line, so I can keep a record, the ones above will be the close ones.

1. Faerie Enchantments, this hits me quite right and have a system to back it up, will keep it in mind.

2. Heal yourself, I connect with the imagery, and even though the system may not be very rigid, I feel the keywords are well thought out.

3. Messenger oracle, this is also very relatable for me, not all that structured, but just like the heal yourself, the key messages are good.

4. Symbolon, I like the artstyle, like a cleaner RWS style. If I ever get into astrology, I might chose this.

5. Wisdom of the Golden Path, pretty and I like the way the keywords work with the images.

6. The Angelarium is pretty wild, I'd get that if I got really serious about Kabbalah I guess.
