I'm so glad to know that, Little Fang. I guess I can write that worry off until she releases the deck. I looked at the images of the Mystical Cats, and if the Magical Dogs is anything like that, I don't think I shall have any problem. :)

I think I found the Emperor's breed.  :D

"These are the last two of the St. John’s water dogs. They were found in Newfoundland in the late 70’s and were featured in Richard Wolters’s The Labrador Retriever…The People…The History…Revisited. The dogs were two ancient males– 13 and 15 years old. One of them was named “Lassie.” Because they were both dogs, there were no bitches to breed them to, and for some reason, nobody thought of breeding them to Labs and other retrievers to save the strain. Remember, all modern retrievers and the Tweed water dog descend from these dogs.

A breed that had once hauled nets and longlines for the Newfoundland fisherman and retrieved shot ptarmigan and seals became extinct when those two dogs died."

Props to her for including one in the deck. They should be remembered.

Ah, she picked that one for the silvered face. I can see that.  :D

I'd have picked a Molosser-type dog, something more imposing, as EmpyreanKnight says, for the Emperor. The kind of dog that doesn't have to DO anything but put his face in the window to frighten off an intruder.

Maybe a Boerboel? This guy looks like pure quiet authority.  ;D And if his left rear leg was back just a bit more, you'd have the famous figure 4/Jupiter effect.

Holy cow, that dog looks like a tank!  ;D

Thanks for that information Katrinka; so sad that they died out, but I'm glad she's honoring them. They sound like very intelligent dogs. The more I see of this deck, the more I look forward to it coming out!

Will be getting this one for sure.  :)

I'm not much for magical dogs, but, well, a must-have.

Take a look at the cuteness overload that is the Fool card in this deck. That's one kawaii pupper that's built for human hugs is what I'm saying:

Regarding the Fool card, now that I've looked dispassionately (lol) at it, it looks like your regular RWS Fool card minus the human protagonist, like he's cropped out of the picture or his white pupper just bounded ahead of him or something.

There had better be a German Shepherd and a Great Pyr in the deck  - or I won't be able to get it, love dogs as I may. Shepherds and Pyrs are my breeds...

I bought the Silver Witch tarot merely because there was a German Shepherd dog in the 7 of Wands card. (and what dog would be more fitting  for a card all about self-protection and self-confidence?) and the Il Cani just for the Moon card...

Let's hope those breeds are there, Padma.

As for me - I wish there are pugs, shih-tzus, shar-peis, malamutes, and beagles in the deck, altho one of each is still good.

The Fool dog looks like a Cairn Terrier. Fantastic little dogs.  :D

They're from the Isle of Skye. And Scotland does have its share of standing stones.  8)

You've got a good eye for this, katrinka. :)

Based on the three sample cards, it seems that for her deck, Ms. Mueller chose breeds that are relatively obscure.

A new dog today- Wheel of Fortune.

A turnspit dog, wth? I don't like this. >:(

The dog in the picture looks more like he's on an exercise wheel, a huge one.  I know they sell them for cats as well!  I'm not sure the turnspit was the intention, but I'm not the artist.  This is just my view.

Here's what she says in her Instagram post:

Today I wanted to share another card from the upcoming tarot deck by Dan and I, Magical Dogs Tarot which is full of the tales of the arcane canines! Featured this week is The Wheel/Wheel of Fortune. As we look out the window on these cold days, let’s all remember that it’s just part of the rhythm of the world and it’s always better to roll with the cycles than to try to rail against them. Hang in there, spring will come! Watch for this new tarot deck September 2018!

So I'm thinking it's probably not supposed to be a turnspit dog? But if you know of that history, I can see how this imagery is very reminiscent of it. I had never heard of such a thing before you posted it, katrinka!

The dog on the card doesn't have the stubby legs that turnspit dogs had. But the wheel is made of somewhat decorative wood, like you might see in an old kitchen. There's really no other context for a dog on a wheel that I know of - people have other, better ways of exercising them. So - that was my best guess. We can wait for the companion book, I suppose.

That post doesn't help, RavenOfSummer. It does not provide any useful detail at all

I looked at many pictures of modern exercise wheels in Google Images and

1. They're not made of creaky wood, like this one is.

2. Modern exercise wheels don't have the wooden cross in the middle. The wheel in that card looks very much like the turnspit wheel in katrinka's link. Look at it.

So yeah, for me this looks very like a turnspit wheel.

Also, just wth at the symbolism. However fast or however much effort the poor dog exerts, he's always going to stay in the bottom, unless by some miracle of physics he can get on top and stay on top for long. Poor doggo.

I'm trying my best to be objective about this all, but I so do not like this. >:(

I guess you're right...I just thought if she were modeling the picture on something so specific, that she would make mention of it in her post. But yes, it doesn't say anything about the background of the imagery.

Yeah. It doesn't really get the Wheel concept across. And I certainly wouldn't make my dog trot on a wheel in a hot kitchen all day cooking a brisket.  :(

Maybe somebody could just ask her what's going on here?

I really hate the idea of a turnspit dog. I know they made poor horses drag boats up and down the river, and turn pulling a wheel to thresh wheat - but that doesn't mean I want to see that daily in a deck!  >:(

Animal abuse is prevalent enough today, without this dreadful reminder from the past.

I hope it's just a mix up... that she didn't think of the turnspit dog when she made it, just about wheels and dogs and seasons changing :( If that is the case it's very unfortunate that the artwork looks so much like one of those poor dogs. The tale of the turnspit dog really doesn't evoke anything close to The Wheel for me so I hope it's not a deliberate choice.
