I believe the creator is actually a genuine root worker from the hoodoo community, so it’s not case of cultural appropriation.

When I looked at the description and images there is The Big House (The Tower), we have such a house here! It is called The Tower and it used to be a big house. Will try to remember and take a picture when I am there next time.

It looks like a really interesting and well put together deck. This creator has published some books too and I believe she’s made decks before. One of them I think you have in your collection? Check her author page on amazon and you’ll know which one I’m referring to, can’t remember the title just now.

bookshop Posted September 21, 2019 Posted September 21, 2019 This is really nice, I'll definitely be thinking about this!

Decan Posted September 30, 2019 Posted September 30, 2019 This deck looks interesting, but I won't pre-order it for now though. For a part I'm in a "not another deck" period, and on the other hand I would be interested in a review on YouTube to see this closer, plus I would like to know what a rootworker will think about the deck and especially the companion book. Will the set be relevant with regard to Hoodoo, with meaningful associations between the symbols and the cards? I try to understand this tradition but won't be able to answer this question on my own. So I wait a bit 🙂
Eric13 Posted September 30, 2019 Posted September 30, 2019 Is that a ghost on the tower steps dressed in a white suit?

So I wait a bit 🙂 Decan beat me to the punch. :) I'm not familiar with the creator. It looks OK, but I can't see everything, obviously. I'm holding off until the whole deck is in peoples' hands. If the legit rootworkers like it, I'll get it. Not until then.
katrinka Posted September 30, 2019 Posted September 30, 2019 XV Miss Robinson looks like it was taken from this Bessie Smith photo: A nod to Bessie is always a plus, but I wonder if she's acknowledged? I hope Aunt Caroline Dye is in the deck someplace. https://encyclopediaofarkansas.net/entries/aunt-caroline-dye-14/
Decan Posted February 21, 2020 Posted February 21, 2020 I totally forgot about this one but I stumbled on a pic of it so I looked at youtube to find an unboxing/review, below!

Look at all those historical rootworkers! Lots I know, and some I don't, too! She got Aunt Caroline Dye in there: So yes, it's in my cart. Not ordered yet though, I'm still trying to figure out why the Miss Robinson card has a picture of Bessie Smith. Some bit of lyric from Bessie? I'm not familiar with everything she did, and Bessie did sing about hoodoo sometimes. Or maybe this Miss Robinson is someone we don't have a photo of and the deck creator just used Bessie as a stand-in? I need to find out before I order. And I agree with the youtuber, that box is awful. But I'm intrigued!
katrinka Posted February 21, 2020 Posted February 21, 2020 Drat, she reviewed it after spending some time with it. Ordered - even though it could still have issues. There's just too much good stuff in it.
katrinka Posted February 24, 2020 Posted February 24, 2020 "Thus, some might say that Hoodoo is North America's only totally unrestricted repository of esoteric knowledge." It arrived Saturday. I had time to look at it quickly before leaving to go to work. (And of course, the first thing I did was to see if the book said anything about the Bessie Smith image used for Miss Robinson. It doesn't. But that's OK - I can't find much information about her online, and no photos - I'm guessing Foisy used Bessie as a stand-in. While I feel somewhat protective of Bessie, there are worse people to be associated with than Miss Robinson, who was reputed to be very powerful.) I had exactly enough time to do that. I didn't even take the shrinkwrap off of the cards until just now. First impression: exceptionally GOOD. Yes, the stock feels a little cheap - but usable - and there's that awful, Schiffer-style box. But in spite of that, this thing is an absolute treasure. The book, as far as I've gotten, seems to be very well-researched and thought out. This, in spite of the author being a very pretty young thing who need not have bothered with dusty academic pursuits in order to make her way in the world: Tayannah is no joke. Remember her name, I think she's on the verge of something big. The writing so far is clear, factual, but engaging. There's no ditzy, new age stuff here. It deals in real life. The stories that go with the cards are memorable enough to stick, this isn't something you have to labor at memorizing. Courts are Mother-Father-Son-Daughter, Crowley-like. So far, I'm impressed.
gregory Posted April 11, 2020 Posted April 11, 2020 SCHIFFER style box ? I wish. All my more recent ones from Schiffer have been high quality magnetic. The box of this one is Just Awful. I - as a non-root-worker - find myself mildly irritated by the fact that so much of what is in the cards has to be looked up in the book. For instance - the Eight of Baskets: he is an unwelcome visitor - we know this because someone has sprinkled hot foot powder on the steps. You have to look in the book to know that - it could just as well be salt, or baking soda. OK that happened to be the first card I looked at, and most don't seem to do that - but it grated. Card stock feels like the cheaper grade from Printerstudio - which is perfectly usable. Looks really interesting - a great deal to learn here.
