Hello! It’s a pleasure to be here with you all. I was a long-time lurker on AT, and was very bummed when it was closed. However, I was very pleased to run across this forum and it’s group of kind, helpful, knowledgable people—everything I liked about AT! This time, though, I think it best if I lurk less and be involved more. 🙂

I’m a transplant to the Midwest from NYC. Back there, I used to read regularly for others for quite a few years (never close to full-time, though—I’m in wild envy of those of you that have this as your career.) Here in the Midwest… it’s a different story due to a different breed of folks than I’m used to. Even at the odd “tarot party” booking I still do around here, I run into lecture-y religious types (they understood the host’s meaning of “tarot party” become coming, right?!) This has me hesitant to read much anymore, and has me shying away from joining the local association/doing their fairs. It’s likely that lack of outlet here that led me back online to you all—so there’s a positive light at the end of that tunnel!

I look forward to getting to know you all, and learning from you!

I don't know if any of us here are doing readings as a full-time career. I know I'm not. I'm retired from everything else and just try to earn extra money reading,  mostly online.

You moved into the Bible belt, my dear, so I don't envy you being into Tarot where you are now. lol  I'm surprised you've found many other readers there at all.  I live on the west coast and got all excited because there was a Tarot tent at one of our summer festivals several years ago, only to find out that the "Tarot" deck the reader was using was the Jamie Sams Sacred Path cards (if I remember right---or maybe it was the Medicine Cards).  The sign said Tarot readings, though.  Anyway, welcome to the forum. It's not nearly as busy as AT but there are really good people here who are all friendly and helpful. Most of us older ones came from AT I think.

Hello all, it's nice to be here! 🙂 I've just joined, having a look around, and felt I had to reply to this thread. I'm originally from the Midwest and now in the Appalachia region, and I can tell you the Midwest is nowhere near as intolerant or Bibley as this place! There are some very backward, superstitious and zealously religious people here - I hit the trifecta! lol Someone had the nerve to open a magic shop in a town not far from here and also offer Tarot readings in the shop.  They put a stop to that right quick, even going so far as to interpret some law to mean that Tarot readings in the store would be illegal, which I'm almost certain isn't true. Fighting this railroading would be useless as the county government is notoriously corrupt; I could tell stories on that subject that would curl your hair. So the magic shop is still there, but they don't do Tarot readings anymore.

Thank you for the warm welcome, all! I can't wait to chat with you all more and learn from you all. 🙂

It definitely runs the gamut here in the Midwest, @Grizabella, that's for sure. It's going to take some serious adjustment on my part. To that end, since my original post, I was approached to do an after-hours private party for local business later this year. I had no problem with the owner's desire for me to do a minimum half dozen mini-readings over the course of the party--but I tried out something new: flat-out saying that I expected no confrontational/belittling querents (read: lecture-y religious types) among the invitees, and that I reserve the right to walk with my full fee if it occurs. She understood/agreed, so perhaps that's just a new "standard" thing I need to include going forward (might as well make it the organizer's problem to better police who they invite.)

Welcome from one new person to another, @Freckles! And, wow, it sounds like I'm in paradise compared to where you are. I don't know that I'd even tempt fate by venturing out to do in-person readings, there. 😮

Thank you, @Alchemist! You are correct. I refuse to go into hiding with the Tarot, but right now I do readings strictly online.
