Liadan Posted November 1, 2019 Posted November 1, 2019 Hello! I go by Liadan, or Lia, online. I just recently got my first tarot deck, Linestrider. I've done 3 readings for myself so far. A couple 3 card spreads and a single card draw. I first try to intuitively read the images and then look up the card meanings after making my initial interpretation. I'm just looking for a community where I can ask my questions of ignorance. Google search just isn't cutting it and I greatly enjoy bouncing ideas and thoughts off others. I've noticed with many things I get tunnel vision and find it helpful to get others perspectives so as to broaden my own view and understanding. Any tips for a beginner would be appreciated!
Eamane Posted November 1, 2019 Posted November 1, 2019 Hey @Liadan! Welcome to the forum. You'll see this is a wonderful place to learn and improve your skills as a reader. You'll find the community to be open, helpful and friendly. Tips for a beginner? 1. Work with whatever the cards tell YOU. 2. Do your own cheat sheet with you own meanings for the cards. 3. Tell stories with your cards. Yes, take any number of cards and make up a story. You'll see how meanings and imagery flows. 4. Do simple readings for whatever comes handy. 5. Don't dispair!

The thing I am finding most confusing right now is all the different ways you can do a 3 card spread. I've been wondering if I am stuck with method I plan to use pre-draw or if it is appropriate to change if my intuition feel like the cards should be read differently. But I can easily get caught up in trying to do things in a "text book" manner until I gain confidence.. I think my biggest challenge is going to be letting go of the idea that there is a right and wrong way. Example: the second 3 card spread I did was a relationship question, specifically looking for guidance in improving the sexual aspect of my marriage (my libido has tanked). I'd been keeping it basic and sticking past, present, future. The cards did read fairly well that way, but I didn't feel it was 'exactly' what the cards were trying to tell me. I have kept a log, so I can replicate this specific draw if desired. Honestly, I've been a little surprised, even unnerved, at how natural(?) Tarot feels to me. It has always piqued my interest but after this week I am really starting to wonder why I have waited 34 years to even begin dabbling in it. The very few reads I have done have felt pretty spot on.

If you plan to do a three card draw with spread positions (such as past-present-future and such like) then shuffle with that intention and your question in mind. If you fancy losing all spread positions and seeing what comes up, shuffle with that intention and (obviously) your question. There is no wrong way. In my eyes, the only wrong thing you can do is to change your mind and your intention, that will only confuse the cards and your readings! 4 minutes ago, Liadan said: Example: the second 3 card spread I did was a relationship question, specifically looking for guidance in improving the sexual aspect of my marriage (my libido has tanked). Tarot is wonderful and its amazing how a set of cards can help you see things with so much more clarity!

I have only been focusing on my question and not at all on the intentions or positions of the spread. It could be very much why the read in question was a bit fuzzy when it came to the actual spread positions. Like I said, it was somewhat accurate as past present future, but it spoke to me in more a context, focus, outcome manner. My thoughts may have been flip flopping between the two as those are the 3 card spread outlined in my book and I am really sticking to bare bones basics while I'm still getting a feel for it.
Ingrida Posted November 1, 2019 Posted November 1, 2019 Welcome! I am also new here and need to learn a lot about Tarot cards. ^^
Guest Posted November 1, 2019 Posted November 1, 2019 Welcome! It's great to be part of this community. Tarot seems to cross our paths at exactly the right moment, doesn't it? I remember when I began building my relationship with the Tarot a couple of decades ago, I was given the advice to do readings as much as possible, and to begin by spending one day with each of the cards, contemplating what they intuitively mean to me first, and only later to read the theory. So I spent a couple of months building my own personal relationship with each of the cards, and then once I had gone through the entire deck, I began again, and entered the study phase. For me that helped me to trust my own 'gut', and to realize that Tarot, for me, is a mirror to what i (and others) know already, but have forgotten. Hope this helps!
